This was their first pro\u00adduc\u00adtion using live actors.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUFO\u201d<\/em> is about SHADO (<strong>S<\/strong>upreme <strong>H<\/strong>ead\u00adquar\u00adters, <strong>A<\/strong>lien <strong>D<\/strong>efense <strong>O<\/strong>rga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion), an above top secret orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion com\u00adbat\u00adting an alien assault on the Earth. Exis\u00adtance of SHADO and the alien threat was kept secret from the pub\u00adlic to pre\u00advent a pan\u00adic that the Aliens could take advan\u00adtage of: main\u00adtain\u00ading this secre\u00adcy was a com\u00admon sto\u00adry ele\u00adment. SHADO\u2019s pri\u00adma\u00adry cov\u00ader is the Har\u00adring\u00adton-Strak\u00ader movie stu\u00addio, spe\u00adcial\u00adiz\u00ading in big-bud\u00adget SF movies, which allows them to move high-tech equip\u00adment as part of a movie with\u00adout being noticed. SHADO main head\u00adquar\u00adters is under\u00adneath the main stu\u00addio com\u00adplex in Eng\u00adland. Oth\u00ader SHADO bases were spread out across the world and even on the Moon. SHADO orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion vehi\u00adcles includes lunar inter\u00adcep\u00adtors, land-based Mobiles, sea-based Sky\u00addivers (sub\u00adma\u00adrine plat\u00adforms launch\u00ading aer\u00adi\u00adal inter\u00adcep\u00adtors), and, most impor\u00adtant\u00adly, SID, or Space Intrud\u00ader Detec\u00adtor, the long range alien detec\u00adtion and track\u00ading satellite.<\/p>\n<p>The Aliens abduct humans and sab\u00ado\u00adtage efforts to stop them; it is dis\u00adcov\u00adered that they dis\u00adsect (or vivi\u00adsect) their cap\u00adtives for body parts, and when an Alien is actu\u00adal\u00adly cap\u00adtured, they are often found to be using a vari\u00adety of trans\u00adplant\u00aded human organs. Alien space\u00adcraft have a fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal incom\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty with the Earth\u00ad\u2019s atmos\u00adphere that caus\u00ades them to self-destruct if they stay for more than a few days. The Aliens show a sophis\u00adti\u00adcat\u00aded knowl\u00adedge not only of human tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy but also of its orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions, includ\u00ading SHADO. The Aliens also under\u00adstand human psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgy, both for \u201ccon\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal\u201d con\u00adtests and for mind con\u00adtrol, and use the lat\u00adter in sev\u00ader\u00adal episodes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Descrip\u00adtion<\/em><em>:<\/em> A UFO man\u00adages to land, the only sur\u00advivor of a group of three. When it lands, it radi\u00adates a blue-green light from a pro\u00adjec\u00adtor on the top of the craft to take con\u00adtrol of three peo\u00adple, com\u00adpelling them to come to the UFO\u2019s land\u00ading site. The selec\u00adtion seems ran\u00addom: two local rur\u00adal inhab\u00adi\u00adtants and a young woman, Lin\u00adda Sim\u00admons, who was just dri\u00adving through. Only her induc\u00adtion is shown; as she dri\u00adves, her eyes close peace\u00adful\u00adly, while inter\u00adcut scenes of the land\u00aded UFO show the pul\u00adsat\u00ading light. She opens her eyes, now expres\u00adsion\u00adless, turns the car around, and dri\u00adves off. At the same time, two men (Daniel Clark and Carl Mason) are also entranced, and begin walk\u00ading away from their homes in a trance. The three meet near the UFO, star\u00ading blankly at the pul\u00adsat\u00ading&nbsp;light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/p>\n<p>When Lin\u00adda returns to her car, appar\u00adent\u00adly awake, she is approached by a motor\u00adcy\u00adcle patrol\u00adman. When he asks her to sub\u00admit to a test for alco\u00adhol, she dri\u00adves off. The patrol\u00adman calls in the report and fol\u00adlows. When he man\u00adages to pull her over, she becomes wide-eyed, and breaks the cop\u2019s&nbsp;neck.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Strak\u00ader helps a strand\u00aded motorist, only it is Clark, who attacks Strak\u00ader, and then leaves him with an writ\u00adten ulti\u00adma\u00adtum: unless SHADO is dis\u00adband\u00aded, first a track\u00ading sta\u00adtion, then a Sky\u00addiv\u00ader sub\u00adma\u00adrine, and final\u00adly Strak\u00ader and SHADO head\u00adquar\u00adters will be destroyed. Strak\u00ader is also amazed at the incred\u00adi\u00adble (and inhu\u00adman) phys\u00adi\u00adcal strength that Clark demonstrated.<\/p>\n<p>The first attack is car\u00adried out that night even through intense phys\u00adi\u00adcal secu\u00adri\u00adty. Clark is appre\u00adhend\u00aded with\u00adout a strug\u00adgle when he approach\u00ades the track\u00ading sta\u00adtion. He is searched, but no destruc\u00adtive device is found. As he is being led away to a hold\u00ading cell, he spots a junc\u00adtion box on the wall. The UFO\u2019s light begins to radi\u00adate, Clark breaks free from his guards and grabs the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal cables: the result\u00ading explo\u00adsion more than lev\u00adels the track\u00ading station.<\/p>\n<p>Evi\u00addence that was trans\u00admit\u00adted from the track\u00ading sta\u00adtion before the blast proves incon\u00adclu\u00adsive, so Strak\u00ader details Cap\u00adtain Lau\u00adritzen, an explo\u00adsive expert, to go to Sky\u00addiv\u00ader 3, but he is inter\u00adcept\u00aded and killed by Sim\u00admons and Mason. Mason takes the expert\u2019s fin\u00adger\u00adprints and goes to the Sky\u00addiv\u00ader base him\u00adself. He pass\u00ades a fin\u00adger\u00adprint scan, but the guards notice he does\u00adn\u2019t match his ID pho\u00adto\u00adgraph, and when he is passed through the secu\u00adri\u00adty area, he is held in a secure room pend\u00ading a voice\u00adprint iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion. Secu\u00adri\u00adty also warns Strak\u00ader, who orders the launch\u00ading of Sky\u00addiv\u00ader 3. The UFO radi\u00adates enough pow\u00ader for Mason to par\u00adtial\u00adly open a three-inch thick steel door, and he man\u00adages to get on the Sky\u00addi\u00adver\u2019s con\u00adning tow\u00ader before it launch\u00ades. Tak\u00ading no chances, Strak\u00ader orders the sub\u00adma\u00adrine to sub\u00admerge, and at the last sec\u00adond, Mason dis\u00adcov\u00aders an elec\u00adtri\u00adcal access pan\u00adel that he tears open. The Sky\u00addiv\u00ader explodes in a ball of&nbsp;fire.<\/p>\n<p>The Aliens appear to put their sub\u00adjects into a fugue state when using them, in which the sub\u00adjects are extreme\u00adly strong and resis\u00adtant to pain. The SHADO doctor\/chief sci\u00aden\u00adtist, com\u00adment\u00ading on oth\u00ader acts by the human sub\u00adjects, terms them \u201cPsy\u00adchobombs\u201d and notes that under cer\u00adtain hyp\u00adnot\u00adic influ\u00adence, peo\u00adple can draw on the \u201cpow\u00ader of the uni\u00adverse\u201d. {It looks more like the UFO is using these peo\u00adple as con\u00adduits for its own destruc\u00adtive ener\u00adgy, with the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal pow\u00ader being the trig\u00adger for the ener\u00adgy\u2019s release.}<\/p>\n<p>Strak\u00ader orders a full search of any\u00adthing unusu\u00adal the night of the UFO land\u00ading, and the motor\u00adcy\u00adcle patrol\u00adman\u2019s report and the report of his death are dis\u00adcov\u00adered. Lin\u00adda is inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded, and the SHADO inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtors find her mur\u00addered boss. He had become to inquis\u00adi\u00adtive about her mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous dis\u00adap\u00adpear\u00adances and laps\u00ades of mem\u00ado\u00adry over the past few days, and had to be silenced. Anoth\u00ader inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor finds her as she returns from work, nei\u00adther know\u00ading that she has mur\u00addered her boss. She begins romanc\u00ading her inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor, her par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar role in the over\u00adall Alien scheme to attack SHADO; it is unclear if the man\u2019s deep attrac\u00adtion to her is due to some new pheromone she has been altered to&nbsp;emit.<\/p>\n<p>Tem\u00adporar\u00adi\u00adly in SHADO cus\u00adtody on sus\u00adpi\u00adcion, Lin\u00adda is con\u00adfused and cry\u00ading, which is quite in order for her own per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty; how\u00adev\u00ader, the UFO, now tak\u00ading off from Earth as SHADO searchers close in, begins puls\u00ading the light, and she enters her zom\u00adbie-like \u201cPsy\u00adchobomb\u201d per\u00adsona with tear tracks still on her face. She slow\u00adly approach\u00ades a guard, who fires sev\u00ader\u00adal times point-blank at&nbsp;her.<\/p>\n<p>The next scene shows her in the SHADO con\u00adtrol room, hurl\u00ading guards and con\u00adsoles out of the way and rip\u00adping two elec\u00adtri\u00adcal cables from the wall; grasp\u00ading both will destroy the instal\u00adla\u00adtion and kill her. At the same time, an inten\u00adsive search for the UFO has flushed it out of hid\u00ading, and it is try\u00ading to flee before it is shot down by SHADO inter\u00adcep\u00adtors. Speak\u00ading through her, the Aliens demand that SHADO sur\u00adren\u00adder; in the pause, her SHADO boyfriend tries to get through to the real Lin\u00adda, who is some\u00adhow try\u00ading to resist. Strik\u00ader tries to con\u00advince her that the UFO has been destroyed, and she does\u00adn\u2019t have to kill her\u00adself. The Aliens con\u00adtrol her too thor\u00adough\u00adly, though, and she turns to car\u00adry out the last com\u00admand. At that moment the UFO is shot down and the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic device no longer con\u00adtrols her; she col\u00adlaps\u00ades, pre\u00adsum\u00adably from the mul\u00adti\u00adple gun\u00adshot wounds she suf\u00adfered before killing the guard or the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal charge that she can no longer control.<\/p>\n<p><em>Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis as an alien tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, and with its com\u00adplete sup\u00adpres\u00adsion of will and per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty more like brain\u00adwash\u00ading in this case. Plau\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty is strained by Lin\u00adda\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adty not only to live but to trash a room\u00adful of secu\u00adri\u00adty per\u00adson\u00adnel after being shot, but that may be on the extreme end of what an altered state might enable some\u00adone to do (par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly if they were not meant to sur\u00advive after\u00adward, and could lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly use all their resources.) The \u201cpow\u00ader of the uni\u00adverse\u201d com\u00admen\u00adtary is much less plau\u00adsi\u00adble, sound\u00ading like unwar\u00adrant\u00aded straight-line pro\u00adjec\u00adtion from the known con\u00adcept of hys\u00adter\u00adi\u00adcal strength.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUFO\u201d<\/em> last\u00aded only one sea\u00adson, in part prob\u00ada\u00adbly because of poor syn\u00addi\u00adca\u00adtion in 1970 (I could only watch it on cold win\u00adter nights when the recep\u00adtion was enhanced enough to catch the sig\u00adnal from a dis\u00adtant tele\u00advi\u00adsion sta\u00adtion.)
