When a young woman goes miss\u00ading, Phillipe Jacque\u00admod, a vaca\u00adtion\u00ading embassy func\u00adtionary, offers to search for her. That search leads him to a clin\u00adic in a remote area of Europe where the direc\u00adtor has col\u00adlect\u00aded a num\u00adber of women and trans\u00adformed them through hyp\u00adno\u00adsis into the great\u00adest and most beau\u00adti\u00adful women of his\u00adto\u00adry. And the miss\u00ading woman is to be the sub\u00adject of his next transformation.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> When a young woman, Lila de Radet\u00adsky, goes miss\u00ading, Phillipe inves\u00adti\u00adgates and tracks her down to a seclud\u00aded cas\u00adtle and clin\u00adic in Hun\u00adgary. Spy\u00ading on the cas\u00adtle, he dis\u00adcov\u00aders a num\u00adber of beau\u00adti\u00adful women dressed in the cloth\u00ading of var\u00adi\u00adous his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal peri\u00adods. His spy\u00ading was dis\u00adcov\u00adered, how\u00adev\u00ader, and he receives a polite let\u00adter invit\u00ading him to the cas\u00adtle: his host, Dr. Schomberg, explains that he estab\u00adlished his clin\u00adic to empow\u00ader women to resist the pow\u00ader of men<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, there is some\u00adthing dark\u00ader here: in the same dia\u00adlog, Dr. Schomberg admits the pri\u00adma\u00adry rea\u00adson for his deci\u00adsion was the dis\u00adcov\u00adery that his lover was unfaith\u00adful. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, although he claims the women are here of their own free will, he imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly con\u00adtra\u00addicts him\u00adself: one of the women, he said, he select\u00aded because she was high\u00adly sus\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adble to his mes\u00admer\u00adic mag\u00adnet\u00adic influ\u00adence. The oth\u00ader women are sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adly in the clin\u00adic are phys\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly free to leave but men\u00adtal\u00adly bound to stay. Even the ones that he \u201callows\u201d to leave still car\u00adry his men\u00adtal compulsions.<\/p>\n

And this is about where I stopped read\u00ading for a while. I found myself pre\u00addict\u00ading where the sto\u00adry was going: Phillipe and Dr. Schomberg would engage in a philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal bat\u00adtle, end\u00ading with either the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist whisk\u00ading away the young damsel in dis\u00adtress away from her intend\u00aded fate, or the same, under the con\u00addi\u00adtions of a wager between the two men as to whose influ\u00adence would be stronger.<\/p>\n

And the lat\u00adter is what appar\u00adent\u00adly hap\u00adpens, although with\u00adout any for\u00admal dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtion. That night, Lila sneaks into Phillipe\u2019s quar\u00adters, where she describes the process by which she was seduced into escap\u00ading with Dr. Schomberg and her hor\u00adror at the results, but the fol\u00adlow\u00ading morn\u00ading, Dr. Schomberg tells Phillipe that he direct\u00aded the entire encounter. Lila is released into Phillipe\u2019s cus\u00adtody but soon after comes a warn\u00ading note from Dr Schomberg that their hos\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adties are about to com\u00admence. Phillipe takes Lila on a cross-Euro\u00adpean excur\u00adsion to avoid Dr. Schomberg and his influ\u00adence only to find his agents (and one of the women from his clin\u00adic) await\u00ading them. That woman is the pri\u00adma\u00adry agent in Dr. Schomberg\u2019s scheme with the doc\u00adtor him\u00adself in the shad\u00adows, wait\u00ading for one fate\u00adful moment the doc\u00adtor has predicted.<\/p>\n

Because Dr. Schomberg\u2019s intent is not to win any bet but to harm Phillipe, to allow him to fall in love with Lila and then to car\u00adry her away from him under his mes\u00admer\u00adic influ\u00adence. What he does not know is that his agent does not ful\u00adly sub\u00adscribe to his wish\u00ades, nor does he under\u00adstand the rela\u00adtion\u00adship that has devel\u00adoped between Lila and Phillipe. In the end, he releas\u00ades Lila to Phillipe\u2019s care and returns to his clin\u00adic, hav\u00ading released the women there (or so it seems: the line in the book is inconclusive.)<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Just who is this doc\u00adtor lying to, the nar\u00adra\u00adtor or him\u00adself? He tells the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist that he had a bro\u00adken rela\u00adtion\u00adship and now he\u2019s try\u00ading to teach women<\/em> how to resist men? To that end, he\u2019s searched Europe for the right women to cre\u00adate a bevvy of leg\u00adendary beau\u00adti\u00adful women (all with trag\u00adic pasts) to live with him in his seclud\u00aded cas\u00adtle. It would all be a lit\u00adtle more believ\u00adable if he were pub\u00adlic about what and why he was doing, but his veil of secre\u00adcy belies that notion.<\/p>\n

Fur\u00adther\u00admore, it is obvi\u00adous that the per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties he cre\u00adat\u00aded were not the doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded women from his\u00adto\u00adry, but, rather, the ide\u00adal\u00adized pro\u00adjec\u00adtions of his own imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion on them. The real Cleopa\u00adtra, not just roy\u00adal\u00adty but of divine parent\u00adage, would nev\u00ader have sat down to din\u00adner with a hea\u00adthen such as Cather\u00adine the Great and made small talk and polite con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion. But we see lit\u00adtle of them after that one scene. <\/p>\n

His most famous nov\u00adel is prob\u00ada\u00adbly \u201cLa Madone des sleep\u00adings<\/i>\u201d (\u201cThe Madon\u00adna of the Sleep\u00ading Cars\u201d<\/em>) which became a best-sell\u00ader in any era, sell\u00ading over 1 mil\u00adlion copes and being trans\u00adlat\u00aded into 30 lan\u00adguages, as well as being trans\u00adlat\u00aded to the sil\u00adver screen twice. \u201cThe Love Clin\u00adic\u201d<\/em> was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly titled \u201cFlammes de velours\u201d<\/em> aka<\/em> \u201cThe Flames of Vel\u00advet\u201d<\/em> (tak\u00aden from a line by Dr. Schomberg: \u201cLove is a vel\u00advet flame that caress\u00ades and con\u00adsumes us at the same time.\u201d<\/em>) and was trans\u00adlat\u00aded from the orig\u00adi\u00adnal French to Eng\u00adlish by F M Atkinson.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Despite the dat\u00aded\u00adness and the reliance on cul\u00adtur\u00adal ele\u00adments and con\u00adven\u00adtions almost a cen\u00adtu\u00adry old, the sto\u00adry does make a good read at the begin\u00adning but even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly becomes more predictable.<\/p>\n
