The toll in human lives is fright\u00adful, and the psy\u00adchic toll on the cit\u00adi\u00adzens of Hamp\u00adst\u00aded is even more oppres\u00adsive. Such an implau\u00adsi\u00adble array of acci\u00addents draws the atten\u00adtion of The Shad\u00adow, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when one of his most val\u00adued agents, Har\u00adry Vin\u00adcent, has dis\u00adap\u00adpeared inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the&nbsp;scene.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As the sto\u00adry opens, anoth\u00ader acci\u00addent occurs at the foundry: the most trust\u00aded work\u00ader is set to start pour\u00ading the molten met\u00adal, when he inex\u00adplic\u00ada\u00adbly starts the pour too soon. The flow\u00ading met\u00adal incin\u00ader\u00adates the men unlucky enough to be caught in the show\u00ader of molten met\u00adal, adding yet anoth\u00ader toll to the town. As with the oth\u00ader acci\u00addents, no imme\u00addi\u00adate cause can be determined.<\/p>\n<p>The Shad\u00adow inves\u00adti\u00adgates, fol\u00adlow\u00ading the track of his val\u00adued agent, dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading a mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous note in Har\u00adry\u2019s vacant hotel room. But that dis\u00adcov\u00adery is laced with mur\u00adder\u00adous intent, as the clue The Shad\u00adow found was also the bait for a lethal trap. Yet The Shad\u00adow was expect\u00ading just such an occur\u00adrence and avoids the trap with ease, and armed with the infor\u00adma\u00adtion from the clue, is able to track a sus\u00adpect to a dark\u00adened apart\u00adment. Once inside, The Shad\u00adow is met by an old foe, thought dead: the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor, Doc\u00adtor Moc\u00adquin\u00adto, and a bril\u00adliant, blaz\u00ading light. The light blazes in a bril\u00adliant dis\u00adplay of col\u00adors designed to both fas\u00adci\u00adnate and stun the con\u00adscious mind. Any\u00adone In that state would accept direc\u00adtions with\u00adout even being aware of it. Thus was the sab\u00ado\u00adtage accom\u00adplished, by sabo\u00adteurs unaware of their own cul\u00adpa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. Doc\u00adtor Moc\u00adquin\u00adto obvi\u00adous\u00adly means to sub\u00adject The Shad\u00adow to its hyp\u00adnot\u00adic influ\u00adence but The Shad\u00adow is made of stern\u00ader stuff and holds the sin\u00adis\u00adter Doc\u00adtor at bay with his automatics.<\/p>\n<p>Doc\u00adtor Moc\u00adquin\u00adto, how\u00adev\u00ader, holds anoth\u00ader card: Har\u00adry, plus the oth\u00ader men who are unknow\u00ading\u00adly under his vil\u00adlain\u00adous hyp\u00adnot\u00adic thrall, are primed and ready to com\u00admit their dead\u00adly sab\u00ado\u00adtage unless the Shad\u00adow relents. Thus The Shad\u00adow and Doc\u00adtor Moc\u00adquin\u00adto are at a stale\u00admate. The Doc\u00adtor allows The Shad\u00adow to leave town, know\u00ading he will be back. Once The Shad\u00adow returns, he begins a game of cat-and-house with the Doc\u00adtor and his schemes to destroy the remain\u00ading indus\u00adtries. Once they are gone, the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor will sweep away the depen\u00addence of tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and replace it with the pow\u00ader of Voodoo.<\/p>\n<p>But The Shad\u00adow antic\u00adi\u00adpates the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor\u2019s plans and thwarts his next attempt. And his inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtions lead him to the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor\u2019s lair, an almost-aban\u00addoned manor in the coun\u00adtry\u00adside. A stealthy assault on the manor dis\u00adcov\u00aders the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor\u2019s next attempt: the knit\u00adting mill, where the volt\u00adage has been set to cause the machines in the plant to run wild. After that, the town movie the\u00adater and hotel are slat\u00aded for destruc\u00adtion, fol\u00adlowed by the manor house itself, to erase all&nbsp;clues.<\/p>\n<p>The Shad\u00adow makes for the base\u00adment to free Har\u00adry, but there fac\u00ading The Shad\u00adow are six zom\u00adbis: men who dis\u00adpleased the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor and were exposed to his hyp\u00adnot\u00adic light for so long and so often their minds had been total\u00adly destroyed. Yet their mechan\u00adi\u00adcal move\u00adments allowed The Shad\u00adow to defeat them and free Har\u00adry and the oth\u00ader pris\u00adon\u00aders. With them safe, The Shad\u00adow dis\u00adables the con\u00adtrols for the explo\u00adsives that will destroy the hotel and the\u00adater and starts the timer on the ones that will destroy the manor. That gives him enough time to trap the Voodoo Doc\u00adtor in the manor just as it explodes, draw\u00ading the vil\u00adlain once thought dead to his cer\u00adtain&nbsp;grave.<\/p>\n<p>First pub\u00adlished in <em>\u201cThe Shad\u00adow Mag\u00ada\u00adzine\u201d<\/em>, May 15, 1936.
