\u201cThe Avengers\u201d #4<\/h2>\n

I know that the Avengers TV series occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly had episodes with mind con\u00adtrol themes, but the com\u00adic, on the oth\u00ader hand, is real\u00adly going over\u00adboard with them.<\/p>\n

In the first three issues, the con\u00adtin\u00adued sto\u00adry line had a group of senior British min\u00adis\u00adters and rank\u00ading mil\u00adi\u00adtary offi\u00adcers all believ\u00ading they were the sur\u00advivors of a nuclear war and Britain was now under the con\u00adtrol of the Hell\u00adfire Club. What gave the plot away was the fact that they all remem\u00adbered hav\u00ading the same break\u00adfast, a result of a hur\u00adried brain\u00adwash\u00ading effort dur\u00ading the set up of the plot. That was\u00adn\u2019t the only brain\u00adwash\u00ading that occurred: the whole pur\u00adpose of the effort was to fur\u00adther brain\u00adwash the offi\u00adcials and return them to Britain. Thanks to the efforts of Steed and Mrs. Peel, they were thwart\u00aded, although not before we get to see Mrs. Peel in her leather and spiked col\u00adlar from the tele\u00advi\u00adsion episode. Plus a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of how Steed and Mrs. Peel arranged their own sys\u00adtem of break\u00ading mind con\u00adtrol with each other.<\/p>\n

But appar\u00adent\u00adly that was\u00adn\u2019t all the brain\u00adwash\u00ading the Hell\u00adfire Club was up to. In issue #4, the plot con\u00adtin\u00adues, this time at a very fan\u00adcy masque ball with the theme of black and white. One guest arrives wear\u00ading black, accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by two fig\u00adures dressed in paint\u00aded in white. Said fig\u00adures were per\u00adform\u00aders of an art form called butoh-fu<\/em><\/a>, a Japan\u00adese form of dance epit\u00ado\u00admized by a Zen-like form\u00adless and grace\u00adful\u00adness. The dancers were said to place them\u00adselves in a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic state for their per\u00adfor\u00admance, a dead give\u00adaway that hyp\u00adnot\u00adic hijinks are upcoming.<\/p>\n

Inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading a mur\u00adder sep\u00ada\u00adrates Steed and Mrs. Peel from the rest of the guests at a most pro\u00adpi\u00adtious time. When they return to the dance floor, its almost emp\u00adty except the man in black and the orches\u00adtra. It turns out that the dancers in white have the guests in a trance, blankly danc\u00ading away into the night, fol\u00adlow\u00ading the dancers like mute Pied Pipers, only to be res\u00adcued by Steed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow per\u00adcep\u00adtive<\/strong>. Their every move, every posi\u00adtion, was an act\u00aded spa\u00adtial engram direct\u00adly affect\u00ading the neur\u00adal path\u00adways of any\u00adone who wit\u00adnessed it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In oth\u00ader words, mind con\u00adtrol through sight and move\u00adment. As for the man in black, he\u2019s con\u00adduc\u00ading the orches\u00adtra, them\u00adselves entranced by the music they\u2019re playing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts a down\u00adward spi\u00adral. Every note they play fur\u00adther ensures they must<\/strong> play the notes that fol\u00adlow. Aur\u00adal hypnosis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mrs. Peel, how\u00adev\u00ader, has some musi\u00adcal tal\u00adents of her own, break\u00ading their trance with a well-blown tuba blast. Then she con\u00adfronts the con\u00adduc\u00adtor, whom she dis\u00adcov\u00aders was the per\u00adson who per\u00adformed the brain\u00adwash\u00ading in the pre\u00advi\u00adous issues, and he is still wield\u00ading some hyp\u00adnot\u00adic tricks up his sleeve (or under his shirt, in this case, a set of speak\u00aders, not to men\u00adtion spi\u00adrals on the backs of his white gloves.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe high sound is your ner\u00advous sys\u00adtem. The low sound your cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion. I\u2019ve learned to manip\u00adu\u00adlate<\/strong> that high sound, and thus the ner\u00advous sys\u00adtem and thus the brain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly Mrs. Peel is able to resist long enough to put a bul\u00adlet through the speak\u00aders and through him, as well.<\/p>\n

In the end, the ques\u00adtion remains of what was the over\u00adall goal of the kid\u00adnap\u00adping attempt and there\u00adfore the ques\u00adtion of whether or not it was suc\u00adcess\u00adful is still unan\u00adswered. But the last scene shows a satel\u00adlite over\u00adlook\u00ading Britain bear\u00ading the arms of the Hell\u00adfire Club. More mind con\u00adtrol via satel\u00adlite?
