\u201cBaku\u00admat\u00adsu Gijin\u00adden Roman<\/i>\u201d<\/a> is a fan\u00adta\u00adsy tale set in late 19th Cen\u00adtu\u00adry Japan. When the black ships returned to Japan in the 19th Cen\u00adtu\u00adry, the 200 year old rule of the Shogun was over\u00adturned, and with it came mass social insta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and ram\u00adpant crime. For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly the peo\u00adple one town have a Robin Hood-like pro\u00adtec\u00adtor, Roman, who is actu\u00adal\u00adly \u201cMis\u00adter Helper\u201d by day. Aid\u00ading Roman is his sis\u00adter Koharu (dressed as a nin\u00adja) and their cute dog Saku\u00adra (dis\u00adguised with a ker\u00adchief over his head). There\u2019s also a full cast of char\u00adac\u00adters sup\u00adport\u00ading him, where\u00adas oth\u00aders are hunt\u00ading him and some whose motives are still unknown.<\/p>\n

This is Roman on the left, in dis\u00adguise, and his sis\u00adter Koharu beside him. In the mid\u00addle is Suzu\u00adki Magoichi,\u00c2  the new inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor with a hid\u00adden mis\u00adsion and a mas\u00adter of gun-fu<\/em>. To the right of him is the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous geisha Lady Oku\u00adma with a hid\u00adden agen\u00adda her\u00adself, and on the far right is prob\u00ada\u00adbly the vil\u00adlian\u2019s com\u00ade\u00addy relief <\/strong>hench\u00adman.<\/p>\n

\"Bakumatsu-Gijinden-Roman\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2018A Lavish Banquet for Guys in Trouble\u2019<\/h3>\n

The episode opens with mas\u00adter thief Ishikawa Gojue\u00admon gloat\u00ading over the suc\u00adcess of his most recent rob\u00adbery at the behest of Lady Oku\u00adma. What he stole was\u00adn\u2019t revealed, but his reward was a night with her, which did\u00adn\u2019t exact\u00adly turn out all that well: he winds up drugged and par\u00ada\u00adlyzed, lay\u00ading on the mat\u00adting, and they the geisha leans over him, catch\u00ading his gaze as her eyes turn into hyp\u00adnot\u00adic kalei\u00addo\u00adscope pat\u00adterns. In the next scene, the poor thief is wan\u00adder\u00ading the streets of the city in a daze, until he is noticed by the police, upon which starts to wake up but the image of her eyes is too strong and he dives into the riv\u00ader to his death.<\/p>\n

And what was stolen? It was a map of the coun\u00adtry, the most com\u00adplete map ever made, describ\u00ading every nat\u00adur\u00adal land\u00admark and water\u00adway, an essen\u00adtial source of infor\u00adma\u00adtion for any invad\u00ading army, and just it so hap\u00adpens there is a West\u00adern mil\u00adi\u00adtary force already estab\u00adlished in a hid\u00adden fortress near\u00adby, where the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous geisha has just deliv\u00adered it. Roman and com\u00adpa\u00adny have to invade the fortress and retrieve the map to save Japan from inva\u00adsion. Magoichi is also involved, as his mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous supe\u00adri\u00ador orders the death of the fortress com\u00adman\u00adder. From then on, the map switch\u00ades hands sev\u00ader\u00adal times until the fortress com\u00adman\u00adder rides away with it, prov\u00ading in the process that he, too, is a mas\u00adter of gun-fu<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> If the char\u00adac\u00adters, espe\u00adcial\u00adly Roman, and the over\u00adall theme of the series appears to resem\u00adble Lupin III<\/a><\/i>, it is because both were the visu\u00adal cre\u00adations of Mon\u00adkey Punch<\/a>.
