They live among nor\u00admal humans, dis\u00adtin\u00adguished only by their pow\u00aders, oth\u00ader\u00adwise undis\u00adtin\u00adguish\u00adable from any one else, dis\u00adtrust\u00aded and even hat\u00aded by both the gen\u00ader\u00adal pop\u00adu\u00adlace and peo\u00adple in author\u00adi\u00adty because of their gifts. Some try to use their gifts for good, oth\u00aders for evil: some just try to exist. <\/p>\n

\nBut they\u2019re not the X\u2011Men and they\u2019re not super\u00adheroes: they\u2019re the Deryni<\/a>, a fan\u00adta\u00adsy race and the sub\u00adject of sev\u00ader\u00adal books and short sto\u00adries by author Kather\u00adine Kurtz<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/p>\n

\nKather\u00adine Kurtz is a fan\u00adta\u00adsy writer best known for her Deryni<\/em> sto\u00adries, a series of fan\u00adta\u00adsy nov\u00adels and short sto\u00adries set in a diver\u00adgent Europe, where a mutant off-shoot of human\u00adi\u00adty known as the Deryni have evolved. These Deryni pos\u00adsess the capac\u00adi\u00adty for a num\u00adber of psy\u00adchic and super\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal gifts, which some have used for their own gain to the detri\u00adment of the race as a whole. Among those psy\u00adchic gifts is a tal\u00adent for trance induc\u00adtion and psy\u00adchic con\u00adtrol, usu\u00adal\u00adly accom\u00adplished through an act that very eas\u00adi\u00adly can be seen as a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic induc\u00adtion: this should come as lit\u00adtle sur\u00adprise, as Kather\u00adine is an Erick\u00adson\u00adian-trained hypnotist. <\/p>\n

\nThe Deryni live in a fan\u00adta\u00adsy realm sim\u00adi\u00adlar to medieval Europe, com\u00adplete with war\u00adring king\u00addoms, polit\u00adi\u00adcal strife, reli\u00adgious fer\u00advor and pow\u00ader strug\u00adgles with\u00adin their own kind. They are hunt\u00aded by the polit\u00adi\u00adcal author\u00adi\u00adties, anath\u00ade\u00adma\u00adtized and hunt\u00aded by the Church and hat\u00aded by the peo\u00adple they live among. It should be not\u00aded that because of the actions of a small num\u00adber of Deryni, much of the ani\u00admos\u00adi\u00adty is jus\u00adti\u00adfied, but the larg\u00ader major\u00adi\u00adty of the Deryni now bear the full brunt of that ani\u00admos\u00adi\u00adty and most live in secret as a result. But behind the scenes the Deryni work to pro\u00adtect their peo\u00adple and advance their sta\u00adtus, or their own sta\u00adtus, as the case might be. These dif\u00adfer\u00ading groups also work at cross-pur\u00adpos\u00ades; some are so obscured that their real pur\u00adpose is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to determine. <\/p>\n

\nCom\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> <\/span>As men\u00adtioned before, the Deryni have a mul\u00adti\u00adtude of psy\u00adchic pow\u00aders, the most preva\u00adlent (and the most used by good and<\/em> bad) is their tele\u00adpath\u00adic abil\u00adi\u00adties to induce a trance, manip\u00adu\u00adlate mem\u00ado\u00adries and com\u00adpel the truth. There are scenes of each in almost every book. When the very iden\u00adti\u00adty of a Deryni is cause for death in cer\u00adtain cir\u00adcum\u00adstances, it is jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adable when the heroes of the book make use of. <\/p>\n
