What was it like the first time you were tranced or tranced someone?<\/h2>\n

Actu\u00adal\u00adly, I should amend that to the first two<\/em> times I was tranced. This is a sto\u00adry I often tell to per\u00adsuade peo\u00adple that hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is<\/em> real.<\/p>\n

In 1984, I attend\u00aded a con\u00adven\u00adtion in Cleve\u00adland, Ohio. I pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly want\u00aded to meet Mar\u00adi\u00adon Zim\u00admer Bradley, the writer and cre\u00adator of the Dark\u00adover nov\u00adels and sto\u00adries, but the real treat was in meet\u00ading Kather\u00adine Kurtz. I knew Kather\u00adine from her Deryni<\/a> nov\u00adels, a series of nov\u00adels set in a medieval fan\u00adta\u00adsy set\u00adting much like medieval Europe, where the mag\u00adic is pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly used by the Deryni. The Deryni are a muta\u00adtion from human\u00adi\u00adty which grants them psy\u00adchic pow\u00aders, includ\u00ading telepa\u00adthy and telekine\u00adsis, plus what can only be described as mag\u00adic. One of the tele\u00adpath\u00adic tal\u00adents used was the abil\u00adi\u00adty to induce a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic trance state in unsus\u00adpect\u00ading or unward\u00aded sub\u00adjects. It should come as no sur\u00adprise, then, that Kather\u00adine was trained as an Erick\u00adson\u00adian hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, and she reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly wrote that into her sto\u00adries<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the final day of the con\u00adven\u00adtion, Kather\u00adine and a few oth\u00aders par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded in a pan\u00adel on hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, and as part of it, she did a group induc\u00adtion and two guid\u00aded imagery ses\u00adsions for the audi\u00adence. I par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded whole\u00adheart\u00aded\u00adly and that is a mem\u00ado\u00adry I still treasure.<\/p>\n

Which leads to the sec\u00adond<\/em> time I was ever hypnotized.<\/p>\n

A good friend of mine just fin\u00adished train\u00ading as a hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, and I invit\u00aded him to come to the month\u00adly meet\u00ading of the local Doc\u00adtor Who fan club, where per\u00adformed a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis for the mem\u00adbers of the club. (I should point out that we would watch a Doc\u00adtor Who<\/em> episode at every meet\u00ading: this time it was \u2018Masque of Man\u00addrago\u00adra\u2019<\/em>, which has one of the most evoca\u00adtive hyp\u00adno\u00adsis induc\u00adtions ever.) After the meet\u00ading was over, I vol\u00adun\u00adteered to do a more per\u00adson\u00adal demon\u00adstra\u00adtion for anoth\u00ader of the club mem\u00adbers. He gave me the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal post-hyp\u00adnot\u00adic amne\u00adsia sug\u00adges\u00adtion and brought me out of trance.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when I went into a fugue state.<\/p>\n

I could\u00adn\u2019t think, I could\u00adn\u2019t speak: I could only mouth words that I did\u00adn\u2019t know how to say. It only last for maybe 15 sec\u00adonds before I was put back into trance and then the sug\u00adges\u00adtion was removed.<\/p>\n

I did\u00adn\u2019t under\u00adstand then but I believe I under\u00adstand now what hap\u00adpened: my sub\u00adcon\u00adscious under\u00adstood the sug\u00adges\u00adtion to for\u00adget being hyp\u00adno\u00adtized to mean for\u00adget ever<\/em> being hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, and my pre\u00advi\u00adous expe\u00adri\u00adence was some\u00adthing I def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly want\u00aded to remem\u00adber, so the two impuls\u00ades were in con\u00adflict and my mind was frozen.<\/p>\n
