The uniden\u00adti\u00adfied nar\u00adra\u00adtor is sum\u00admoned to the deathbed of an old acquain\u00adtance, whom he had mes\u00admer\u00adized in the past. The acquain\u00adtance, one M. Valde\u00admar, expressed his desire to be placed in a mes\u00admer\u00adic trance just before death.<\/p>\n

It want\u00aded about five min\u00adutes of eight when, tak\u00ading the patient\u2019s hand, I begged him to state, as dis\u00adtinct\u00adly as he could, to Mr. L \u2014\u2014 l, whether he (M. Valde\u00admar,) was entire\u00adly will\u00ading that I should make the exper\u00adi\u00adment of mes\u00admer\u00adiz\u00ading him in his then condition.<\/p>\n

He replied fee\u00adbly, yet quite audi\u00adbly, \u201cYes, I wish to be mes\u00admer\u00adized\u201d \u2014 adding imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly after\u00adwards, \u201cI fear you have deferred it too long.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he spoke thus, I com\u00admenced the pass\u00ades which I had already found most effec\u00adtu\u00adal in sub\u00addu\u00ading him. He was evi\u00addent\u00adly influ\u00adenced with the first lat\u00ader\u00adal stroke of my hand across his fore\u00adhead; but although I exert\u00aded all my pow\u00aders, no far\u00adther per\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adble effect was induced until some min\u00adutes after ten o\u2019clock, when Doc\u00adtors D\u2014\u2014 and F\u2014\u2014 called, accord\u00ading to appoint\u00adment. This con\u00addi\u00adtion was near\u00adly unal\u00adtered for a quar\u00adter of an hour. At the expi\u00adra\u00adtion of this peri\u00adod, how\u00adev\u00ader, a nat\u00adur\u00adal although a very deep sigh escaped the bosom of the dying man, and the ster\u00adto\u00adri\u00adous breath\u00ading ceased \u2014 that is to say, its ster\u00adto\u00adri\u00adous\u00adness was no longer appar\u00adent; the inter\u00advals were undi\u00admin\u00adished. The patient\u2019s extrem\u00adi\u00adties were of an icy coldness.<\/p>\n

At five min\u00adutes before eleven, I per\u00adceived unequiv\u00ado\u00adcal signs of the mes\u00admer\u00adic influ\u00adence. I was not sat\u00adis\u00adfied, how\u00adev\u00ader, with this, but con\u00adtin\u00adued the manip\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions vig\u00ador\u00adous\u00adly, and with the fullest exer\u00adtion of the will, until I had com\u00adplete\u00adly stiff\u00adened the limbs of the slum\u00adber\u00ader, after plac\u00ading them in a seem\u00ading\u00adly easy posi\u00adtion. The legs were at full length; the arms were near\u00adly so, and reposed on the bed at a mod\u00ader\u00adate dis\u00adtance from the loins. The head was very slight\u00adly elevated.<\/p>\n

When I had accom\u00adplished this, it was ful\u00adly mid\u00adnight, and I request\u00aded the gen\u00adtle\u00admen present to exam\u00adine M. Valdemar\u2019s con\u00addi\u00adtion. I was thor\u00adough\u00adly unnerved, and for an instant remained unde\u00adcid\u00aded what to do. At first I made an endeav\u00ador to re-com\u00adpose the patient; but, fail\u00ading in this through total abeyance of the will, I retraced my steps and as earnest\u00adly strug\u00adgled to awak\u00aden him. In this attempt I soon saw that I should be suc\u00adcess\u00adful \u2014 or at least I soon fan\u00adcied that my suc\u00adcess would be com\u00adplete \u2014 and I am sure that all in the room were pre\u00adpared to see the patient awaken.<\/p>\n

For what real\u00adly occurred, how\u00adev\u00ader, it is quite impos\u00adsi\u00adble that any human being could have been prepared.<\/p>\n

As I rapid\u00adly made the mes\u00admer\u00adic pass\u00ades, amid ejac\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions of \u201cdead! dead!\u201d absolute\u00adly burst\u00ading<\/i> from the tongue and not from the lips of the suf\u00adfer\u00ader, his whole frame at once \u2014 with\u00adin the space of a sin\u00adgle minute, or even less, shrunk \u2014 crum\u00adbled \u2014 absolute\u00adly rot\u00adted<\/i> away beneath my hands.
