Stereo\u00adtypes about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis abound in the media:<\/strong> for exam\u00adple, how, under hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, you can be made to do what\u00adev\u00ader the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist directs; how the hyp\u00adno\u00adtized sub\u00adject has no free will or abil\u00adi\u00adty to resist the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist; how peo\u00adple can be hyp\u00adno\u00adtized with\u00adout their knowl\u00adedge and against their will. The stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal men\u00adtal images, too, abound, both about the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and the sub\u00adject: the irre\u00adsistible hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, whose eyes peo\u00adple avoid because they don\u2019t want to look into them and be instant\u00adly hyp\u00adno\u00adtized1<\/sup>; the sin\u00adis\u00adter crim\u00adi\u00adnal (usu\u00adal\u00adly male) hyp\u00adno\u00adtist who manip\u00adu\u00adlates their sub\u00adjects for crim\u00adi\u00adnal pur\u00adpos\u00ades2<\/sup>; the sen\u00adsu\u00adal hyp\u00adno\u00adtist (usu\u00adal\u00adly female) who manip\u00adu\u00adlates their sub\u00adjects for sex\u00adu\u00adal pur\u00adpos\u00ades3<\/sup>; the incom\u00adpe\u00adtent hyp\u00adno\u00adtist who gives the wrong sug\u00adges\u00adtions at the wrong time4<\/sup>; the unsus\u00adpect\u00ading sub\u00adject5<\/sup>; the weak-willed sub\u00adject who can\u2019t resist the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist6<\/sup>; the ditzy sub\u00adject who can\u2019t fol\u00adlow any sug\u00adges\u00adtions cor\u00adrect\u00adly7<\/sup>; the mis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly-hyp\u00adno\u00adtized sub\u00adject who com\u00adplies with a post-hyp\u00adnot\u00adic sug\u00adges\u00adtion at the most inap\u00adpro\u00adpri\u00adate time8<\/sup>. Even the stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal visu\u00adal images abound: swirling spi\u00adrals, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in the eyes of the entranced sub\u00adject; swing\u00ading watch\u00ades or sparkling crys\u00adtals; blank, star\u00ading eyes (espe\u00adcial\u00adly in ani\u00adme where the eyes become com\u00adplete\u00adly flat disks) and even blanker voic\u00ades; peo\u00adple sleep\u00adwalk\u00ading with their arms outstretched.<\/p>\n

Any prac\u00adtic\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adtist or even some\u00adone just acquaint\u00aded with the sub\u00adject will say that these are exact\u00adly what they\u2019re described to be: stereo\u00adtypes, no more real than any oth\u00ader stereo\u00adtype. So then, why do they keep appear\u00ading, over and over in the media? Has\u00adn\u2019t the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty been try\u00ading to change these stereo\u00adtypes for at least six\u00adty years, if not longer? What is caus\u00ading these stereo\u00adtypes to remain among the pub\u00adlic consciousness?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The rea\u00adson is that this prob\u00adlem is basi\u00adcal\u00adly a com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions prob\u00adlem<\/strong>, not just in that the cor\u00adrect infor\u00adma\u00adtion about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is not being com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcat\u00aded but also that the incor\u00adrect infor\u00adma\u00adtion is<\/em> being communicated.<\/p>\n

There are essen\u00adtial\u00adly three ways for peo\u00adple to get infor\u00adma\u00adtion about any\u00adthing, includ\u00ading hypnosis:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. First per\u00adson \u2014 first-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, either for ther\u00ada\u00adpy, for curios\u00adi\u00adty, or for fun.<\/li>\n
  2. Sec\u00adond per\u00adson \u2014 sec\u00adond-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence, being told by some\u00adone else about their first-hand experience.<\/li>\n
  3. Third per\u00adson \u2014 third-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence, see\u00ading what some\u00adone said or wrote about it through the fil\u00adter of any type of fic\u00adtion\u00adal media (tele\u00advi\u00adsion, movies, books, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The prob\u00adlem is that the great major\u00adi\u00adty of peo\u00adple get their infor\u00adma\u00adtion about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly and some\u00adtimes exclu\u00adsive\u00adly through the third per\u00adson. (That\u2019s the case for just about any\u00adthing.) That is because peo\u00adple with first-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence with hyp\u00adno\u00adsis are very uncom\u00admon, and peo\u00adple who are will\u00ading to talk about their expe\u00adri\u00adence to oth\u00aders are a sub\u00adset of that group. There\u00adfore, most peo\u00adple get their infor\u00adma\u00adtion about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis third-hand through the media, and its almost always bad.<\/p>\n

    That\u2019s because the peo\u00adple who cre\u00adate the media rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtions of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis are them\u00adselves part of that much larg\u00ader group who only know about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis third-hand and rarely take the time or effort to research the sub\u00adject to get it cor\u00adrect. And that infor\u00adma\u00adtion was from oth\u00ader peo\u00adple in the same sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, cre\u00adat\u00ading a chain of mis\u00adin\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion passed down from one gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of writ\u00aders and cre\u00adators to the next: lack\u00ading any first-hand or sec\u00adond-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence, writ\u00aders and cre\u00adators of this gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion are influ\u00adenced by the writ\u00aders and cre\u00adators of the pre\u00advi\u00adous gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion, who them\u00adselves. lack\u00ading the same kind of expo\u00adsure, were influ\u00adenced by the pre\u00advi\u00adous gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion, and so on and so on. This means that the pub\u00adlic aware\u00adness of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is essen\u00adtial\u00adly formed from the stereo\u00adtypes known, cre\u00adat\u00aded and pro\u00admul\u00adgat\u00aded from the 1930\u2019s or ear\u00adli\u00ader, with addi\u00adtion\u00adal mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal (such as the sen\u00adsa\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized top\u00adic of the Bridey Mur\u00adphy rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adtion sto\u00adry) added but nev\u00ader real\u00adly sub\u00adtract\u00aded along the way with lit\u00adtle cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading fact-check\u00ading involved.<\/p>\n

    There is also the mat\u00adter that the cor\u00adrect impres\u00adsions of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis are, for enter\u00adtain\u00adment pur\u00adpos\u00ades, bor\u00ading<\/em>. Stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is a very handy plot device, whether for com\u00ade\u00addy (the mis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly-hyp\u00adno\u00adtized sub\u00adject, for exam\u00adple), dra\u00adma (the hyp\u00adno\u00adtized assas\u00adsin) or hor\u00adror (the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic zom\u00adbie mas\u00adter.) Such plot devices not only derive their pow\u00ader from the stereo\u00adtypes but also serve to rein\u00adforce them, as well: its a kind of cul\u00adtur\u00adal short\u00adhand at work that alle\u00advi\u00adates some of the explana\u00adto\u00adry work on the part of writer, free\u00ading them to work on oth\u00ader parts of the sto\u00adry line. As such, they will be con\u00adtin\u00adued to be used by screen\u00adwrit\u00aders and nov\u00adel\u00adists for years to come.<\/p>\n

    So what can be done about cor\u00adrect\u00ading the stereo\u00adtype, espe\u00adcial\u00adly by individuals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    A good start is to protest these stereo\u00adtypes when they appear. For exam\u00adple, when the \u201cChar\u00adlie\u2019s Angels\u201d<\/em> episode \u2018Attack Angels\u2019<\/em> first aired, the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion sent the net\u00adwork a let\u00adter of protest con\u00adcern\u00ading the ram\u00adpant stereo\u00adtyp\u00ading of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in the sto\u00adry. The news of the protest espe\u00adcial\u00adly served to show just how wrong the por\u00adtray\u00adal was in the episode, and pos\u00adsi\u00adbly a few peo\u00adple (hope\u00adful\u00adly includ\u00ading a few Hol\u00adly\u00adwood peo\u00adple) learned the dif\u00adfer\u00adence between stereo\u00adtype and reality.<\/p>\n

    Anoth\u00ader is to par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpate in the World Hyp\u00adno\u00adtism Day<\/a>, which is Jan\u00adu\u00adary 4th<\/sup>, which is an event intend\u00aded to do just that. This is a time when any and all pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal hyp\u00adno\u00adtists, hyp\u00adnother\u00ada\u00adpists and any\u00adone else who use hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in their pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal career make their case known to the pub\u00adlic news media about the real\u00adi\u00adty of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. The orga\u00adniz\u00aders of World Hyp\u00adno\u00adtism Day and their asso\u00adciates will help pro\u00admot\u00ading the events on their web\u00adsite and assist local efforts in this cause.<\/p>\n

    But hyp\u00adno\u00adsis pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals should not just con\u00adcen\u00adtrate on just that one day: these stereo\u00adtypes direct\u00adly impact their pro\u00adfes\u00adsion on a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous lev\u00adel and they should there\u00adfore be con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly act\u00ading to com\u00adbat these stereo\u00adtypes, and the per\u00adfect time to do so is in com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion with self-pro\u00admo\u00adtion. They should under\u00adstand that it is in their best pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal inter\u00adest to defend their pro\u00adfes\u00adsion by renounc\u00ading the stereo\u00adtypes and inform\u00ading the pub\u00adlic of the real\u00adi\u00adty of hypnosis.<\/p>\n

    And even the non-pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals who are inter\u00adest\u00aded in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and who are read\u00ading this can do this: they should already know when they see a hyp\u00adno\u00adsis-relat\u00aded stereo\u00adtype, and they should call it as such to their friends.<\/p>\n

    All in all, its up to the peo\u00adple who know hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and under\u00adstand how the stereo\u00adtypes dam\u00adage the appear\u00adance of it in the pub\u00adlic are\u00adna to do what they can to improve it. How they do it is up to them.<\/p>\n

    2. For exam\u00adple: Sven\u00adgali, just to name one, although his pur\u00adpose for hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading Tril\u00adby was more for finan\u00adcial gain than any\u00adthing more sin\u00adis\u00adter. Fu Manchu, for another.<\/li>\n
    3. For exam\u00adple: Fah Lo Suee, daugh\u00adter of the above men\u00adtioned Fu Manchu.<\/li>\n
    4. The old joke about the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist who says \u201cShit!\u201d on stage and how every\u00adone hyp\u00adno\u00adtized responds.<\/li>\n
    5. For exam\u00adple: Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Hardy in \u201cYoung Sher\u00adlock Holmes\u201d<\/em>, who has no idea why Mori\u00adar\u00adty is direct\u00ading the reflec\u00adtions from his ring into her eyes, only that they are mak\u00ading her eyes heavy and her feel sleepy.<\/li>\n
    6. For exam\u00adple: Tril\u00adby ala<\/em> Sven\u00adgali as com\u00admon\u00adly pictured.<\/li>\n
    7. For exam\u00adple: Melody from \u201cJosie and the Pussy\u00adcats\u201d<\/em> who, when hyp\u00adno\u00adtized in one episode, respond\u00aded to the direc\u00adtion to respond \u201cYes, Mas\u00adter\u201d with \u201cYes, Mis\u00adter Mustard\u201d.<\/li>\n
