\u201cEnchant\u00adment: Fire in the Mind\u201d<\/em> and \u201cIllu\u00adsion\u00adism: Smoke and Mir\u00adrors\u201d\u009d<\/em> by Mon\u00adgoose Pub\u00adlish\u00ading. Two \u201cEncy\u00adclo\u00adpe\u00addia: Arcane\u201d\u009d<\/em> sup\u00adple\u00adments for the 3rd Edi\u00adtion of Dun\u00adgeon & Drag\u00adons for their respec\u00adtive schools of wizardry.<\/p>\n

These books were writ\u00adten to aug\u00adment D&D with addi\u00adtion\u00adal spells, mag\u00adic items, feats and pres\u00adtige class\u00ades. This was pos\u00adsi\u00adble because of the Open Gam\u00ading and D20 Licens\u00ades for 3rd edi\u00adtion D&D by Wiz\u00adards of the Coast in the ear\u00adly 2000\u2019s.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I found these at the local com\u00adic store for a buck each. Of course I got the \u201cEnchant\u00adment\u201d <\/em>book for the Col\u00adlec\u00adtion, but I picked up the \u201cIllu\u00adsion\u201d\u009d<\/em> book on a whim. Or maybe not: some\u00adtimes I have found some\u00adthing unex\u00adpect\u00aded for the Col\u00adlec\u00adtion, and this was one of those times.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cEnchant\u00admen\u00adt\u00e2\u201d<\/em> starts with the cov\u00ader image, of an old wiz\u00adard relax\u00ading, using his enchant\u00adment spells on the peo\u00adple around him. The inte\u00adri\u00ador art\u00adwork is mixed, with about half being a vari\u00adety of images of seduc\u00adtive enchantress\u00ades from sev\u00ader\u00adal artists. The con\u00adtent is as expect\u00aded: new mind con\u00adtrol\u00adling spells, feats which mod\u00adi\u00adfy spells, pres\u00adtige class\u00ades, and mag\u00adic items. There is also a sec\u00adtion for Game Mas\u00adters and one for cre\u00adat\u00ading Thralls. The only thing miss\u00ading from sim\u00adi\u00adlar books is doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion on mod\u00adi\u00adfy\u00ading exist\u00ading skills.<\/p>\n

The pres\u00adtige class\u00ades (spe\u00adcial\u00adty class\u00ades based on the stan\u00addard class\u00ades) were a bit of a sur\u00adprise. Empath and Mind\u00admender diverged from the clas\u00adsic mind con\u00adtroller. The Mind\u00admender is actu\u00adal\u00adly mind heal\u00ader, espe\u00adcial\u00adly for peo\u00adple rav\u00adaged by enchanters. The Empath is a mas\u00adter of emo\u00adtions, espe\u00adcial\u00adly their own, and can be a heal\u00ader or con\u00adtroller. How\u00adev\u00ader, the Pup\u00adpeteer and Dark Temptress pres\u00adtige class\u00ades were more clas\u00adsic. All of the class descrip\u00adtions delve into con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable detail on the progress of their class advancement.<\/p>\n

The flavour text is amus\u00ading: half is the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion between an appren\u00adtice seek\u00ading a mas\u00adter and an evil mas\u00adter enchanter, the rest is the thoughts of some\u00adone under the con\u00adtrol of an enchantress, the mus\u00adings of the enchantress her\u00adself, or the med\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions of an Empath.<\/p>\n

All in all, this is a very good game book on incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00ading enchanters into a D&D game. The pro\u00adduc\u00adtion val\u00adues are excel\u00adlent, although the inte\u00adri\u00ador art\u00adwork is uneven and some\u00adtimes quite gener\u00adic. I have seen much worse.<\/p>\n

Now for \u201cIllu\u00adsion\u00adism\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This book is very sim\u00adi\u00adlar to \u201cEnchant\u00adment\u201d<\/em> above, with the same for\u00admat and goals. I won\u2019t go into much detail about it, because much of the book revolves around var\u00adi\u00adous schools of illu\u00adsion mag\u00adic that don\u2019t involve any kind of mind control.<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, I found some\u00adthing that left me won\u00adder\u00ading why it was includ\u00aded here.<\/p>\n

Skill: Profession  Hypnotist (Wis: Trained Only)<\/em><\/h4>\n

One page was devot\u00aded to describ\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adtism as a skill in a fan\u00adta\u00adsy set\u00adting. There was also a Hyp\u00adno\u00adtist pres\u00adtige class, with stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal flavour text.<\/p>\n

The skill descrip\u00adtion is work\u00adable, if a lit\u00adtle cum\u00adber\u00adsome, and one too many dice rolls involved. The pres\u00adtige class par\u00adtial\u00adly relieves or obvi\u00adates some of the cum\u00adber\u00adsome ele\u00adments, and would be inter\u00adest\u00ading to play.<\/p>\n

But why was this mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal not in \u201cEnchant\u00adment\u201d\u009d<\/em>?<\/p>\n

My guess was that these \u201cEncy\u00adclo\u00adpe\u00addia: Arcane\u201d\u009d<\/em> books are a stan\u00addard 64 page size, and there was\u00adn\u2019t room for this mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal in the \u201cEnchant\u00adment\u201d book, so it got moved over to the (rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly) clos\u00adest school of mag\u00adic. The sole jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion is the illu\u00adsion spell Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Pattern.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just glad they did. Into the Col\u00adlec\u00adtion they go.<\/p>\n
