Char\u00adlie\u2019s Angels<\/a> inves\u00adti\u00adgates a hos\u00adtile takeover of a com\u00adpa\u00adny that involves the sus\u00adpi\u00adcious deaths of sev\u00ader\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adny board mem\u00adbers. Kel\u00adly<\/a> (Jaclyn Smith<\/a>) and Kris<\/a> (Cheryl Ladd<\/a>) are sent under\u00adcov\u00ader to the com\u00adpa\u00adny to inves\u00adti\u00adgate while Julie Rogers<\/a> (Tanya Roberts<\/a>) attempts to infil\u00adtrate Rear\u00addon Asso\u00adciates, which had sup\u00adplied many of the com\u00adpa\u00adny\u2019s staff. What they find is a con\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adcy com\u00adbin\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and murder<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Rear\u00addon Asso\u00adciates, a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal employ\u00adment and staffing agency, is a front for a crim\u00adi\u00adnal enter\u00adprise which hyp\u00adno\u00adtizes and pro\u00adgrams its female employ\u00adees into com\u00admit\u00adting espi\u00adonage, mur\u00adder and sui\u00adcide. The head of the com\u00adpa\u00adny, John Rear\u00addon (Eric Brae\u00adden<\/a>) was employed by unscrupu\u00adlous financers to mur\u00adder the board mem\u00adbers to help pro\u00admote a hos\u00adtile takeover of the com\u00adpa\u00adny. At his com\u00admand, the board mem\u00adbers were mur\u00addered by the hyp\u00adno\u00adtized staff mem\u00adbers, who would seem\u00ading\u00adly to any\u00adthing for him.<\/p>\n

To demon\u00adstrate his pow\u00ader over his employ\u00adees to his employ\u00aders, Rear\u00addon first orders the three women ser\u00advants (employ\u00adees) at his lit\u00adtle par\u00adty for his employ\u00aders to for\u00adget every\u00adthing they see and hear that evening, which they blithe\u00adly agree to; then, tak\u00ading a lit can\u00addle, he holds it before one of the women, instruct\u00ading her to pass her hand over it. The flame is cold, she is told, as the flick\u00ader\u00ading can\u00addle flame com\u00adpletes the post-hyp\u00adnot\u00adic sug\u00adges\u00adtion that puts her into a deep trance. She is then told to open the win\u00addow, which is guard\u00aded with a lethal elec\u00adtric charge, which she would have done had not one of the employ\u00aders fret\u00adful\u00adly stopped the demonstration.<\/p>\n

Julie\u2019s infil\u00adtra\u00adtion is dis\u00adcov\u00adered when she says she was an old friend of one of the agen\u00adcies\u2019 late employ\u00adees, which was part of the fake back\u00adground pre\u00adpared for the employ\u00adee. She is put through a series of sec\u00adre\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adal exams: the last is a typ\u00ading test, where she is seat\u00aded in a fea\u00adture\u00adless white room with two strobe lights sur\u00adround\u00ading her. The words of the test she hears from Rear\u00addon are actu\u00adal\u00adly the induc\u00adtion, as she is told to breathe deeply, to think only of the words, to fol\u00adlow the lights, to relax more and more.<\/p>\n\n

She falls into a trance, then is led deep\u00ader in trance using the same can\u00addle flame fix\u00ada\u00adtion (which appears to be a trade\u00admark: it gets used again lat\u00ader, too, as a post-hyp\u00adnot\u00adic sug\u00adges\u00adtion to have the employ\u00adees repeat the induc\u00adtion, strength\u00aden\u00ading the trance suggestions).<\/p>\n

The trance and pro\u00adgram\u00adming is deep\u00adened through the use of a oxy\u00adgen depri\u00adva\u00adtion cham\u00adber: a clear plas\u00adtic tank of warm water, in which Julie is seat\u00aded wear\u00ading only a swim\u00adsuit. The pro\u00adgram\u00adming is so suc\u00adcess\u00adful that Julie will make an \u201call-clear\u201d report to Char\u00adlie lat\u00ader that evening while still being deeply hyp\u00adno\u00adtized. The pro\u00adgram\u00adming also includ\u00aded indi\u00advid\u00adual rein\u00adforce\u00adment, which Julie per\u00adforms in her apart\u00adment lat\u00ader that night.<\/p>\n

The assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion plot will be revealed when the mur\u00adder of anoth\u00ader board mem\u00adber, a poi\u00adson\u00ading, is avert\u00aded by the swift action of the Angels. The woman pro\u00adgrammed to per\u00adform the mur\u00adder is then ter\u00adri\u00adbly con\u00adfused and suf\u00adfers a break\u00addown: when her desk is searched the Angels find the same can\u00addle\u00adstick as they had seen Julie have, and they sus\u00adpect Julie may also have been affect\u00aded. Rear\u00addon will try to use Julie to per\u00adform the final assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion, but will be stopped by Kris, and she will return Rear\u00addon, who will try to kill her by putting her in the depri\u00adva\u00adtion cham\u00adber and leav\u00ading her there.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> This episode got a lot of flack when it first aired because of the way it treat\u00aded hyp\u00adno\u00adsis; much of the crit\u00adi\u00adcism is jus\u00adti\u00adfied, except for the typ\u00ading test induc\u00adtion: I remem\u00adber Erick\u00adson writ\u00ading on how he used a sim\u00adi\u00adlar tech\u00adnique once with a stenographer.<\/p>\n
