\u201cAgents of S.W.I.N.G.\u201d an RPG by Postmortem Studios (2011)<\/h1>\n

Agent, the world faces many threats, threats more dan\u00adger\u00adous and more imma\u00adnent than nuclear anni\u00adhi\u00adla\u00adtion. You have been select\u00aded to join the secret guardians of the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A #Hyp\u00adno\u00adMe\u00addi\u00ada\u00adCol\u00adlec\u00adtion<\/a> entry.<\/p>\n

An RPG based on British tele\u00advi\u00adsion pro\u00adgrams from the Swingin\u2019 60\u2019s and Rockin\u2019 70\u2019s, from crime dra\u00admas to sci\u00adence fan\u00adta\u00adsy. And, as with many RPGs, it includes rules for some form of hypnosis.<\/p>\n

I am includ\u00ading it because I am a big fan of sev\u00ader\u00adal pro\u00adgrams of that peri\u00adod. Many of these pro\u00adgrams includ\u00aded var\u00adi\u00adous forms of mind con\u00adtrol and hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. Not that the book men\u00adtions the pro\u00adgrams, but it does include an exten\u00adsive sec\u00adtion of (very) thin\u00adly-dis\u00adguised char\u00adac\u00adters based on the stars of these pro\u00adgrams. Char\u00adac\u00adters like suave lady-killer spy John Chain, Agent Zero; British secret agent John Swan; gen\u00adtle\u00adman spy James Ryde; gen\u00adtle\u00adman thief Jack Cheva\u00adlier, The Angel; unnat\u00adur\u00adal agents Cobalt and Iron; the time trav\u00adel\u00ading Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor; Num\u00adber 8; and Agent Crim\u00adson, who trans\u00adlate to James Bond; \u201cSecret Agent\u201d<\/em> John Drake; John Steed of * \u201cThe Avengers\u201d\u009d<\/em>; Simon Tem\u00adplar, \u201cThe Saint\u201d\u009d<\/em>; Sap\u00adphire and Steel from the epony\u00admous series; * Doc\u00adtor Who; the anony\u00admous * Pris\u00adon\u00ader; and * Cap\u00adtain Scar\u00adlet. Oth\u00ader series include * \u201cThe Cham\u00adpi\u00adons\u201d<\/em>, \u201cThe Per\u00adsuaders\u201d<\/em>, \u201cThe Pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals\u201d<\/em>, * \u201cDepart\u00adment S\u201d<\/em> and \u201cJason King\u201d<\/em>, \u201cJoe 90\u201d<\/em>, and * \u201cThe New Avengers\u201d<\/em>. I rec\u00adog\u00adnize sev\u00ader\u00adal oth\u00ader char\u00adac\u00adters, but I can\u2019t remem\u00adber the exact programs.<\/p>\n

Giv\u00aden the nature of the series, * \u201cUFO\u201d<\/em> might have been includ\u00aded in the RPG, except it explic\u00adit\u00adly states that it is set in the year 1980.<\/p>\n

The rules are based on the FATE sys\u00adtem: skills are rat\u00aded from Yawn at +0, down to Bum\u00admer at \u20113 and up to Out of Sight at +8. 2 dice are rolled: one pre\u00ads\u00ade\u00adlect\u00aded die is sub\u00adtract\u00aded from the oth\u00ader, and the skill rat\u00ading added. Pos\u00adi\u00adtive val\u00adues are suc\u00adcess\u00ades, neg\u00ada\u00adtive, failures.<\/p>\n

The game book goes into detail on the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion of S.W.I.N.G.: Supreme World Intel\u00adli\u00adgence Net\u00adwork Group, an agency with a broad scope, from fight\u00ading crime to fight\u00ading alien invaders, all secret\u00adly. Oppo\u00adnents include an Ori\u00aden\u00adtal secret soci\u00adety run by a for\u00admer Chi\u00adnese Man\u00addarin; 218, a Trot\u00adsky\u00adist rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary move\u00adment; The Coun\u00adcil Of Non-Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Evil Mag\u00adnates, a British nation\u00adal\u00adist orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion; and NAUTILUS, a world-span\u00adning crim\u00adi\u00adnal empire.<\/p>\n

All in all, a fun and curi\u00adous pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion. The rules are sim\u00adple enough to run as a one-shot, con\u00adven\u00adtion pick\u00adup game. One thought is \u201cToo Many Bonds\u201d\u009d fea\u00adtur\u00ading the first three or four movie James Bonds, or maybe a riff of the first (non-canon) \u201cCasi\u00adno Royale\u201d\u009d movie.<\/p>\n

Since the game book includes Mes\u00admerism as an abil\u00adi\u00adty, but does\u00adn\u2019t include a sam\u00adple char\u00adac\u00adter that includes it, (but one that should) I wrote up one (based on a lit\u00ader\u00adary char\u00adac\u00adter that could exist in this time peri\u00adod, or maybe does, in the Mar\u00advel comics universe).<\/p>\n
