There was a change in car\u00adtoons in the 1970\u2019s, fol\u00adlow\u00ading a mis\u00adplaced furor about vio\u00adlence in chil\u00addren\u2019s car\u00adtoons. Vio\u00adlence, even car\u00adtoon vio\u00adlence, was sud\u00adden\u00adly for\u00adbid\u00adden. That was the rea\u00adson you nev\u00ader saw Thun\u00addarr the Bar\u00adbar\u00adian decap\u00adi\u00adtate any\u00adone with his Sun Sword. It was why Cobra pilots always bailed out before their jets explod\u00aded. It was why GI Joe and Cobra used laser weapons that only seemed to affect tanks and jeeps instead of ordi\u00adnary rifles and machine guns. (The lat\u00adter was also cheap\u00ader to animate.)<\/p>\n

It forced writ\u00aders to devel\u00adop new and dif\u00adfer\u00adent (or old and dif\u00adfer\u00adent) sto\u00adries and plot devices on a week\u00adly basis.<\/p>\n

Enter Mind Control.<\/p>\n

Mind Con\u00adtrol was a stan\u00addard fic\u00adtion\u00adal plot device since the days of Mes\u00admer, and it had a reoc\u00adcurence in car\u00adtoons dur\u00ading the 1970\u2019s. It was espe\u00adcial\u00adly con\u00adve\u00adnient for pop\u00adu\u00adlar fan\u00adta\u00adsy or super-sci\u00adence based shows like He-Man and GI Joe, because there were many more ways to invoke Mind Con\u00adtrol. With Mind Con\u00adtrol, car\u00adtoons did\u00adn\u2019t need phys\u00adi\u00adcal vio\u00adlence to add con\u00adflict. Which leads us back to He-Man and the Mas\u00adters of the Uni\u00adverse: \u201cTee\u00adla\u2019s Secret\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTee\u00adla\u2019s Secret\u201d is a Gold\u00aden Book, a 48 page per\u00adfect bound hard\u00adcov\u00ader book with illus\u00adtra\u00adtions on each page, accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by short para\u00adgraphs of one to three sen\u00adtences each. It was from aimed at the 7\u20139 age range.<\/p>\n

Back cov\u00ader text: Teela was He-Man\u2019s side\u00adkick. She was secret\u00adly the daugh\u00adter of the Sor\u00adcer\u00adess, but nev\u00ader knew her par\u00adents. Skele\u00adtor used the Jew\u00adel of the Ages to entrance Teela into believ\u00ading Skele\u00adtor was her father. The Jew\u00adel gave Teela the pow\u00ader to defeat He-Man for Skeletor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mean\u00adwhile, Skele\u00adtor\u2019s lack\u00adey Evil-Lyn betrayed him to his puta\u00adtive supe\u00adri\u00ador Hor\u00addak, leader of the Horde, because Evil-Lyn is jeal\u00adous of Tee\u00adla\u2019s new con\u00adnec\u00adtion with Skele\u00adtor. Hor\u00addak returns the betray\u00adal by betray\u00ading her, hop\u00ading to defeat Skele\u00adtor and He-Man at the same time and rule both Eter\u00adnia and Ethe\u00adria. He-Man is able to reach the good\u00adness with\u00adin Teela and get her to reject Skele\u00adtor\u2019s lies, and togeth\u00ader they defeat Skele\u00adtor and Hor\u00addak. The Sor\u00adcer\u00adess heals Teela, telling her that she is sure her moth\u00ader is very proud of her, and every\u00adthing is back to normal.<\/p>\n

Quite a bla\u00adtant episode of MC, and in a kid\u2019s book, too. I was quite sur\u00adprised to dis\u00adcov\u00ader it at the local used book store, idly glanc\u00ading inside it. When I saw the image of Teela and the Jew\u00adel, I knew I had to have it for the Collection.<\/p>\n
