Even today, that phrase is rec\u00adog\u00adnized and the char\u00adac\u00adter remem\u00adbered: the Shad\u00adow, who pos\u00adsessed the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00ader to \u201ccloud men\u2019s minds\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n

But The Shad\u00adow<\/a> had a con\u00advo\u00adlut\u00aded his\u00adto\u00adry: he did\u00adn\u2019t always have that pow\u00ader; in fact, he was\u00adn\u2019t a pulp char\u00adac\u00adter in the first place!<\/p>\n

Mag\u00ada\u00adzine pub\u00adlish\u00aders Street and Smith want\u00aded a mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous announc\u00ader to host their radio dra\u00admas based on sto\u00adries plub\u00adlished in their Detec\u00adtive Sto\u00adry Mag\u00ada\u00adzine<\/em>. The result was the Shad\u00adow, who would intro\u00adduce the sto\u00adries on radio: oth\u00ader can\u00addi\u00addates for the char\u00adac\u00adter\u2019s name were \u201cThe Inspec\u00adtor\u201d\u009d and \u201cThe Sleuth\u201d\u009d. They received an imme\u00addi\u00adate and unex\u00adpect\u00aded suc\u00adcess: buy\u00aders began ask\u00ading the news\u00adstands for the \u201cShad\u00adow\u201d\u009d mag\u00ada\u00adzine. See\u00ading an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty, Street and Smith asked pulp writer Wal\u00adter Gib\u00adson<\/a> to cre\u00adate the char\u00adac\u00adter for the new Shad\u00adow Mag\u00ada\u00adzine<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A pro\u00adlif\u00adic pulp author, Gib\u00adson was also a stage magi\u00adcian and hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and a close friend of magi\u00adcians Joseph Dun\u00adninger<\/a> and Howard Thurston<\/a>. Using the pen-name of Maxwell Grant, Gib\u00adson would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly write 282 of the 325 sto\u00adries pub\u00adlished, writ\u00ading one almost every two weeks: he had a sys\u00adtem that let him write quick\u00adly and eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. Guest authors wrote the remain\u00ading sto\u00adries, includ\u00ading pulp author Lester Dent<\/a>, author of the Doc Sav\u00adage nov\u00adels. <\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Gib\u00adson also ghost-wrote books on stage mag\u00adic with such lumi\u00adnar\u00adies as Har\u00adry Hou\u00addi\u00adni, Har\u00adry Black\u00adstone and Joseph Dun\u00adninger, and wrote or co-wrote (with his wife) a num\u00adber of books on mag\u00adic, yoga, and psy\u00adchic phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna, includ\u00ading a book on hyp\u00adno\u00adsis enti\u00adtled \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtism Through the Ages\u201d\u009d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Gib\u00adson cre\u00adat\u00aded the Shad\u00adow, based, he said, on Bram Stok\u00ader\u2019s \u201cDrac\u00adu\u00adla\u201d\u009d<\/em> and Edward Bul\u00adw\u00ader-Lyt\u00adton\u2019s<\/a> sto\u00adry \u2018The Haunt\u00aded and the Haunter\u2019<\/em> (also known as \u2018The House and the Brain\u2019)<\/em>. Secret\u00adly, the Shad\u00adow was Kent Allard, avi\u00ada\u00adtor, but he took the name and per\u00adsona of play\u00adboy Lam\u00adont Cranston to min\u00adgle with the upper-class: he would take oth\u00ader iden\u00adti\u00adties in his war on crime. He also used a num\u00adber of agents, some\u00adtimes recruit\u00ading them when he saved them from crime. He was a mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous fig\u00adure that dis\u00adpensed jus\u00adtice in the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal pulp style, depend\u00ading on his pow\u00aders of stealth to appear from the shadows.<\/p>\n

When the Shad\u00adow returned to radio, sev\u00ader\u00adal changes were made. Gone was Kent Allard, the Shad\u00adow was always Lam\u00adont Cranston. The char\u00adac\u00adter of Mar\u00adgo Lane, the Shad\u00adow\u2019s female side\u00adkick, was added, who would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly become part of the pulp mag\u00ada\u00adzine sto\u00adries, too. And, most impor\u00adtant\u00adly, to explain his preter\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal abil\u00adi\u00adty to con\u00adceal him\u00adself, he was giv\u00aden the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00ader to \u201ccloud men\u2019s minds\u201d\u009d that he learned in the Ori\u00adent: that pow\u00ader would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly find its way back into the pulp series, as well.<\/p>\n

The radio sto\u00adries include at least two sto\u00adries involv\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and men\u00adtal con\u00adtrol: \u2018The Hyp\u00adno\u00adtized Audi\u00adence\u2019<\/a> where the antag\u00ado\u00adnist hyp\u00adno\u00adtizes an entire audi\u00adence in order to kid\u00adnap the state gov\u00ader\u00adnor to have him release his broth\u00ader who is cur\u00adrent\u00adly sen\u00adtenced to be exe\u00adcut\u00aded that night, and anoth\u00ader whose antag\u00ado\u00adnist pos\u00adsessed men\u00adtal pow\u00aders of psy\u00adchic dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. Both were stopped by the Shad\u00adow, of course.<\/p>\n

After the war, the pulps declined but were not for\u00adgot\u00adten. In the 1970\u2019s, DC Comics revived the Shad\u00adow (and anoth\u00ader pulp hero, the Avenger) in a short-lived but well-received series. The Shad\u00adow of the comics was an amal\u00adga\u00adma\u00adtion of both the radio and pulp char\u00adac\u00adters: he did not have the \u201cpow\u00ader to cloud men\u2019s minds\u201d\u009d, pre\u00adfer\u00adring to rely on his twin .45 auto\u00admat\u00adics, but he did wear a curi\u00adous gira\u00adsol<\/em> (red fire opal) ring , once owned by Rasputin and reput\u00aded to be the source of his hyp\u00adnot\u00adic prowess, that he used as a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic focus. The title fea\u00adtured the work of comics writer Den\u00adnis O\u2019Neil<\/a> and artist Wm.
