Aliens invade Los Ange\u00adles (and by impli\u00adca\u00adtion, the entire world) but no one notices, because of their tele\u00advi\u00adsion mind con\u00adtrol devices. Only a few peo\u00adple can see the truth and they are the most hunt\u00aded peo\u00adple on the planet.<\/p>\n

Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly for the aliens, the newest per\u00adson to see through the mind con\u00adtrol haze is a drifter with an extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary sense of self-preser\u00adva\u00adtion and the back-alley fight\u00ading skills to back it up. One drifter against an entire city. The aliens are in trouble.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> The hero, George (Rod\u00addy Piper<\/a>) an unem\u00adployed con\u00adstruc\u00adtion work\u00ader, wan\u00adders into Los Ange\u00adles, look\u00ading for work in a down-turned econ\u00ado\u00admy. He was\u00adn\u2019t expect\u00ading to be a hero, but when he finds a pair of sun\u00adglass\u00ades in the ruin of a church after a police raid, he dis\u00adcov\u00aders the glass\u00ades reveal the truth about the world: a black&white image of ram\u00adpant sub\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adnal pro\u00adgram\u00adming and indoc\u00adtri\u00adna\u00adtion, all designed to paci\u00adfy a pop\u00adu\u00adlace and hide an alien inva\u00adsion and the aliens them\u00adselves from the paci\u00adfied populace.<\/p>\n

And with that knowl\u00adedge comes con\u00adflict: once the aliens iden\u00adti\u00adfy him as some\u00adone who knows the truth, the full might of the city is after him. For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, he is also dis\u00adcov\u00adered by the under\u00adground resis\u00adtance move\u00adment who dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted the sun\u00adglass\u00ades and is prepar\u00ading a raid on the cen\u00adtral con\u00adtrol of the alien mind con\u00adtrol device: once it is destroyed, the world will see the truth.<\/p>\n

His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> \u201cThey Live\u201d<\/em> is based on two direct sources as well as being fla\u00advored by John Car\u00adpen\u00adter\u2019<\/a>s own expe\u00adri\u00adences in Hol\u00adly\u00adwood. The orig\u00adi\u00adnal sto\u00adry was tak\u00aden from the 1963 short sto\u00adry \u2018Eight O\u2019Clock in the Morn\u00ading\u2019<\/em><\/a> by Ray Nel\u00adson<\/a> com\u00adbined with a sto\u00adry named \u2018Nada\u2019<\/em> from the com\u00adic book \u201cAlien Encoun\u00adters\u201d<\/em>. Nel\u00adson\u2019s sto\u00adry involved a man (George Nada) who was hyp\u00adno\u00adtized by a stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, who, when brought out of his trance, real\u00adized he (and the rest of the world) had been hyp\u00adno\u00adtized as part of an alien inva\u00adsion: one of the aliens dis\u00adcov\u00adered this and com\u00admand\u00aded him to die of a heart attack at 8:00 am. Car\u00adpen\u00adter bought the rights to both sto\u00adries as the basis for the film.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> When it was released, it received a mixed reac\u00adtion from the crit\u00adics and nev\u00ader real\u00adly reached an audi\u00adence.. Which was a pity, because the film pos\u00adsessed both intel\u00adli\u00adgence and sly humor (the sub\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adnal mes\u00adsage on a dol\u00adlar bill read \u201cthis is your god<\/span><\/strong>\u201d and Rod\u00addy Piper\u2019s quote in the bank: \u201cI\u2019m here to chew bub\u00adblegum and kick ass \u2026 and I\u2019m all out of bub\u00adblegum.\u201d<\/em>) John Car\u00adpen\u00adter took every clich\u00e9 about alien inva\u00adsions, mixed well with Phillip K Dick para\u00adnoia and social com\u00admen\u00adtary and cre\u00adat\u00aded a scathing crit\u00adi\u00adcal satire about soci\u00adety in gen\u00ader\u00adal and its slav\u00adish devo\u00adtion to con\u00adfor\u00admi\u00adty and con\u00adspic\u00adu\u00adous consumption.<\/p>\n

Adden\u00adda:<\/em><\/p>\n
