Aliens that only one per\u00adson can see, as the rest of human\u00adi\u00adty is under a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic illu\u00adsion of nor\u00admal\u00adcy. Aliens with hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders. Aliens who see human\u00adi\u00adty as only a food source.<\/p>\n

Its a com\u00admon enough sto\u00adry line. \u2018Eight O\u2019Clock in the Morn\u00ading\u2019<\/em> by Ray Nel\u00adson<\/a> is a very short tale of one man who is awak\u00adened from the alien\u2019s trance and what he does to counter them.<\/p>\n

At the end of the show the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist told his sub\u00adjects, \u201cAwake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some\u00adthing unusu\u00adal happened.<\/p>\n

One of the sub\u00adjects awoke all the way. This had nev\u00ader hap\u00adpened before. His name was George Nada and he blinked out at the sea of faces in the the\u00adatre, at first unaware of any\u00adthing out of the ordi\u00adnary. Then he noticed, spot\u00adted here and there in the crowd, the non-human faces, the faces of the Fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtors. They had been there all along, of course, but only George was real\u00adly awake, so only George rec\u00adog\u00adnized them for what they were. He under\u00adstood every\u00adthing in a flash, includ\u00ading the fact that if he were to give any out\u00adward sign, the Fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtors would instant\u00adly com\u00admand him to return to his for\u00admer state, and he would obey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u2018Eight O\u2019Clock in the Morn\u00ading<\/em>\u2019 was first pub\u00adlished in The M<\/em>agazine of Fan\u00adta\u00adsy and Sci\u00adence Fic\u00adtion<\/em> in 1963.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> When giv\u00aden the com\u00admand to awak\u00aden in a stage hyp\u00adno\u00adsis show,  vol\u00adun\u00adteer George Nada is imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly and total\u00adly awake: he rec\u00adog\u00adnizes the aliens in the audi\u00adence, some\u00adthing no one else seems to be aware of. Oth\u00ader signs, too, are now notice\u00adable: the image of the the aliens on tele\u00advi\u00adsion, hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading the audi\u00adence to main\u00adtain the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic illu\u00adsion, posters that say \u201cMar\u00adry and Repro\u00adduce\u201d. He is able to turn the hyp\u00adno\u00adtized audi\u00adence against the aliens but at a cost.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> The sto\u00adry is rushed: the lead char\u00adac\u00adter is in imme\u00addi\u00adate pos\u00adses\u00adsion of too much infor\u00adma\u00adtion ti be real\u00adly plau\u00adsi\u00adble. He imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnizes the Fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtors and even knows their name; he knows his \u201ccon\u00adtrol\u201d and even how to con\u00adtact him; he is able to oper\u00adate, albeit late at night, almost entire\u00adly at will. All in all, that\u2019s a lit\u00adtle too pat for my tastes.<\/p>\n

And if the sto\u00adry sounds sus\u00adpi\u00adcious\u00adly sim\u00adi\u00adlar to the movie \u201cThey Live\u201d<\/em>, its no won\u00adder: John Car\u00adpen\u00adter bought the rights to the sto\u00adry in order to make the movie. It also is sim\u00adi\u00adlar to the short sto\u00adry \u2018Look\u00ading For Some\u00adthing\u2019<\/em> by Frank Her\u00adbert, although the lat\u00adter is much longer and is told from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of the stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, not the subject.<\/p>\n
