Blofeld\u2019s lat\u00adest scheme is a world-wide black\u00admail plot, assist\u00aded by a num\u00adber of love\u00adly ladies under Blofeld\u2019s hyp\u00adnot\u00adic con\u00adtrol. Com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00ading mat\u00adters is the mutu\u00adal attrac\u00adtion Bond feels toward Tra\u00adcy di Vicen\u00adso (Diana Rigg<\/a>), daugh\u00adter of the head of the Union Corse crime syndicate.<\/p>\n

Ernst Stavro Blofeld<\/strong>: With a dif\u00adfer\u00adence. Our big break\u00adthrough since last sum\u00admer has been the con\u00adfec\u00adtion of a cer\u00adtain\u2026 Virus Omega.<\/p>\n

James Bond<\/strong>: Infer\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n

Ernst Stavro Blofeld<\/strong>: TOTAL Infer\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adty! In plants and ani\u00admals. Not just dis\u00adease in a few herds, Mr. Bond. Or the loss of a sin\u00adgle crop. But the destruc\u00adtion of a whole strain. For\u00adev\u00ader! Through\u00adout an entire con\u00adti\u00adnent. If my demands are not met, I shall pro\u00adceed with the sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic extinc\u00adtion of whole species of cere\u00adals and live\u00adstock all over the world!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The release vec\u00adtor for this infer\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adty virus is the unique part: the clin\u00adic was described as a last-chance resort for women with food and relat\u00aded aller\u00adgies. Part of their treat\u00adment used hyp\u00adno\u00adsis to rein\u00adforce their feel\u00adings toward the objects of their aller\u00adgies, a state Blofeld used to con\u00addi\u00adtion them to obe\u00addi\u00adence. (In the orig\u00adi\u00adnal nov\u00adel, they are told that the virus or relat\u00aded pathogen is a secret that will enhance the breed, to alle\u00advi\u00adate any pos\u00adsi\u00adble fears or wor\u00adries on the part of the women.) Each was giv\u00aden a por\u00adtion of the virus and instruc\u00adtions on when to acti\u00advate a radio to receive their orders to release it.<\/p>\n

Lack\u00ading assis\u00adtance from his supe\u00adri\u00adors, Bond turns to the Union Corse for help in assault\u00ading the clin\u00adic and stop\u00adping Blofeld. The raid is a suc\u00adcess but Blofeld man\u00adages to escape. Bond mar\u00adries Tra\u00adcy, but their hon\u00adey\u00admoon is cut short when Blofeld attacks their car after the wed\u00adding: Bond sur\u00advives but Tra\u00adcy is killed, set\u00adting the stage for Bond\u2019s quest for vengeance over the next sev\u00ader\u00adal films.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> When first released, it suf\u00adfered from the inevitable com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson between Lazen\u00adby and Con\u00adnery, which is unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate in that almost no one could fill Sean Con\u00adnery\u2019s place. In many regards, though, this was an excel\u00adlent Bond film.\u00c2 It is one of the ear\u00adly Bond films so it close\u00adly fol\u00adlows the orig\u00adi\u00adnal nov\u00adel, more close\u00adly than even its pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsors with the changes help\u00ading the film: Blofeld\u2019s black\u00admail scheme in the nov\u00adel was only against Britain in the nov\u00adel but here its glob\u00adal, for instance.<\/p>\n

As in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal nov\u00adel, the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis aspects are well done. The first induc\u00adtion seen, per\u00adformed at a time when the sub\u00adjects are half-asleep and total\u00adly vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble, is quite believ\u00adable; the sec\u00adond, at the farewell par\u00adty, appears to be drug-assist\u00aded (note that Irma Blunt does not drink as the rest of the woman have) although not stat\u00aded as such and would not be nec\u00ades\u00adsary, giv\u00aden the their con\u00adstant hyp\u00adnot\u00adic con\u00addi\u00adtion\u00ading and reinforcement.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded. This is one of the best Bond films (of the ear\u00adly films, I put it third behind \u201cFrom Rus\u00adsia With Love\u201d and \u201cDoc\u00adtor No\u201d) in a num\u00adber of ways: the way it empha\u00adsizes the core ele\u00adments of Bond, the down-to-earth action and fight scenes, the lit\u00adtle bits of casu\u00adal humor (\u201cThis nev\u00ader hap\u00adpened to the oth\u00ader guy.\u201d), the love\u00adly out\u00addoor sequences, the romance (a rar\u00adi\u00adty for Bond films.) Plus, the pres\u00adence of Diana Rigg as the tem\u00adpes\u00adtu\u00adous Tra\u00adcy as the per\u00adfect woman for Bond.<\/p>\n
