One of the more con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsial things that Google has done (at least to authors such as myself) was to dig\u00adi\u00adtize and con\u00advert a wide vari\u00adety of writ\u00adten mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal and present it to the pub\u00adlic. (Writ\u00aders were con\u00adcerned about copy\u00adright issues, some\u00adthing that direct\u00adly affects their profession.)<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, with that dig\u00adi\u00adtized mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal now avail\u00adable, it is pos\u00adsi\u00adble to process it is many dif\u00adfer\u00adent and inter\u00adest\u00ading ways. One of them is Google Ngrams<\/a>, which is a search engine designed to track the appear\u00adance of cer\u00adtain words in the col\u00adlec\u00adtion and relate them to spe\u00adcif\u00adic eras when that word was used. In oth\u00ader words, this is a search tool to reveal the times in which a spe\u00adcif\u00adic word became part of the lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture and to track its pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty. The data\u00adbase only can pro\u00advide infor\u00adma\u00adtion for the peri\u00adod 1800 to the present, however.<\/p>\n

But since the word \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u201d and the relat\u00aded terms were cre\u00adat\u00aded by James Braid in the 1820\u2019s, they def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly fall with\u00adin the time range. So, just as an exper\u00adi\u00adment, I entered the terms \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u201d, \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adtism\u201d and \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adtize\u201d into the data\u00adbase and got this result<\/a>. As I expect\u00aded, the three terms start\u00aded appear\u00ading in the 1820s, but what mild\u00adly sur\u00adprised me was the jump in appear\u00adances in the ear\u00adly 1880\u2019s, prob\u00ada\u00adbly coin\u00adcid\u00ading with the increased inter\u00adest in the sub\u00adject in Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan Britain and America.<\/p>\n

In con\u00adtrast, a com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson between \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adtism\u201d and  \u201cmes\u00admerism\u201d here<\/a> shows a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly sim\u00adi\u00adlar rate of appear\u00adance since before the start of the data set, with a spike in the ear\u00adly 1840\u2019s and 1850\u2019s, then set\u00adtles down to a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly sta\u00adble appear\u00adance rate up to the 1920\u2019s and slow\u00adly declin\u00ading to present.<\/p>\n

Anoth\u00ader part of the search engine, one that has been around for a while, allows for search\u00ades inside the var\u00adi\u00adous books, mag\u00ada\u00adzines and arti\u00adcles in the data\u00adbase, This includes not only a num\u00adber seri\u00adous books on the sub\u00adject but also a num\u00adber of pieces of fic\u00adtion as well. They\u2019re well worth inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading: one exam\u00adple here<\/a> searched for any\u00adthing in the 1800\u20131850 time frame that includes the word \u201cmes\u00admerism\u201d and returns sev\u00ader\u00adal items, includ\u00ading works by such ear\u00adly fig\u00adures as James Esdaile and Thomas Buckland.<\/p>\n
