It just goes to show that there\u2019s always some\u00adthing else to dis\u00adcov\u00ader out there, even when deal\u00ading with such a nar\u00adrow field of inter\u00adest as the cross-over between hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and media. As a major super\u00adhero com\u00adic fan and being some\u00adwhat knowl\u00adedge\u00adable about their his\u00adto\u00adry, I thought I knew of most every super\u00adheroic hyp\u00adno\u00adtist but there is one that I learned about only recently.<\/p>\n

That super\u00adhero is \u201cHip Knox \u2014 The Super Hyp\u00adno\u00adtist\u201d. Hip Knox appeared in Super\u00adworld Comics #1\u20133, along with his bit\u00adter rival, a thug\u00adgish crim\u00adi\u00adnal named McFadden.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s a sto\u00adry behind the com\u00adic and the hero.<\/p>\n

Hip Knox was the adopt\u00aded son of a famous sci\u00aden\u00adtist, Dr Knox, who treat\u00aded the sick\u00adly child and devel\u00adoped his impres\u00adsive men\u00adtal abil\u00adi\u00adties of SUPER hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. Dr Knox also cau\u00adtioned the young child against using his pow\u00aders for evil. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly for Dr Knox and his son, his ene\u00admy, Eric McFad\u00adden, would stop at noth\u00ading to destroy the good Doc\u00adtor and all his works to fur\u00adther his own crim\u00adi\u00adnal enterprises.<\/p>\n

Hip Knox appeared in \u201cSuper\u00adworld\u201d<\/em> comics, in issues 1\u20133. In the third issue, McFad\u00adden and his cronies kid\u00adnap Hip and imprison him on an exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal space plane, send\u00ading him to his doom, but in true super\u00adhero fash\u00adion, Hip escapes and returns to enact jus\u00adtice upon his enemy.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuper\u00adworld\u201d<\/em> was pub\u00adlished by Hugo Gerns\u00adback<\/a>, who is rec\u00adog\u00adnized as the first edi\u00adtor of a sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion mag\u00ada\u00adzine (\u201cAmaz\u00ading Sto\u00adries\u201d<\/em>) and is con\u00adsid\u00adered one of the fathers of mod\u00adern SF. The Hugo Award, award\u00aded every year by the World Sci\u00adence Fic\u00adtion Con\u00adven\u00adtion is named for him. Accord\u00ading<\/a> to \u201cHugo Gerns\u00adback and the Cen\u00adtu\u00adry of Sci\u00adence Fic\u00adtion\u201d<\/em> by Gary West\u00adfahl, McFad\u00adden was \u201csure\u00adly\u201d based on Bernarr McFad\u00adden, who he believes was the cause of Gerns\u00adback\u00ad\u2019s bank\u00adrupt\u00adcy in 1929. (Or not: oth\u00aders believe it was Gerns\u00adback him\u00adself who put him\u00adself into bank\u00adrupt\u00adcy, or was so dis\u00adtract\u00aded by the death of his young daugh\u00adter that is hap\u00adpened through no fault of any\u00adone.) The bank\u00adrupt\u00adcy caused Gerns\u00adback to lose con\u00adtrol of \u201cAmaz\u00ading Sto\u00adries\u201d<\/em> to McFad\u00adden. The phys\u00adi\u00adcal sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty and pose are strik\u00ading: McFad\u00adden in the comics is shown with the same mus\u00adtache as Bernarr McFad\u00adden would wear, and he is shown posed in a typ\u00adi\u00adcal body-build\u00ading pose, which Bernarr also was. (Not that Gerns\u00adback was much bet\u00adter: he was noto\u00adri\u00adous for pay\u00ading his authors lit\u00adtle or noth\u00ading, even being accused of cheat\u00ading them.)<\/p>\n

Bernarr McFad\u00adden<\/a> was one of the ear\u00adly pio\u00adneers in the body-build\u00ading cul\u00adture. He was the stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal weak\u00adling-to-ath\u00adlete sto\u00adry, being a sick\u00adly young\u00adster who trained him\u00adself to the peak of phys\u00adi\u00adcal health. He would also become a pub\u00adlish\u00ader, start\u00ading with \u201cPhys\u00adi\u00adcal Cul\u00adture\u201d<\/i><\/em> mag\u00ada\u00adzine in 1899 and lat\u00ader adding such mag\u00ada\u00adzines as \u201cTrue Sto\u00adry<\/i>\u201d<\/em> (1919), \u201cTrue Romances<\/i>\u201d<\/em> (1923), and \u201cTrue Detec\u00adtive Mys\u00adtery Mag\u00ada\u00adzine<\/i>\u201d (1924). He also orga\u00adnized the first body-build\u00ading com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion in Amer\u00adi\u00adca in 1903 and fos\u00adtered the career of body\u00adbuilder Charles Atlas.<\/p>\n

Strange\u00adly enough, both Gerns\u00adback and McFad\u00adden were both born on April 16th<\/sup>, though many years apart.<\/p>\n
