Two entries this week, one expect\u00aded and one unex\u00adpect\u00aded. The first, \u201cZatan\u00adna\u201d<\/em>, is a title I nor\u00admal\u00adly col\u00adlect, the sec\u00adond one, \u201cBat\u00adman Annu\u00adal\u201d<\/em>, that I nor\u00admal\u00adly don\u2019t both\u00ader with but exam\u00adined just because it was new this week, and I\u2019m glad I did.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cZatanna # 8\u201d<\/em> \u2014 \u2018Pupaphobia\u2019<\/em><\/h3>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Zatan\u00adna Zatara<\/a>, daugh\u00adter of the Gold\u00aden Age hero John Zatara<\/a> and a major-league super\u00adheroine in her own right, has a pho\u00adbia: pup\u00adpets. She\u2019s faced down inter\u00adgalac\u00adtic armies and demon lords, fought malev\u00ado\u00adlent foes mys\u00adti\u00adcal and mighty, yet the sight of a pup\u00adpet makes her weak. (She tried to over\u00adcome her fear by appear\u00ading on a very pop\u00adu\u00adlar chil\u00addrens\u2019 pro\u00adgram that includ\u00aded pup\u00adpets and wound up vom\u00adit\u00ading in the trash\u00adcan of the green-furred puppet.)<\/p>\n

To find the source of that fear, she employs the assis\u00adtance of a night\u00admare imp known as Fuseli, who shows her an image from her past seen as a night\u00admare. But there\u2019s resis\u00adtance to see\u00ading the true nature of the image, until she uses her own mag\u00adic to find the truth. And she does\u00adn\u2019t like what she saw.<\/p>\n

As a young girl, she was attacked by a mas\u00adter pup\u00adpeteer. For his crime, her father trans\u00adformed the pup\u00adpeteer into a pup\u00adpet. A dis\u00adtraught Zatan\u00adna recoiled from her father, aghast at what he had done, so he used his mag\u00adic to cause her to for\u00adget the inci\u00addent. Except it had last\u00ading effects deep within.<\/p>\n

But that was just a night\u00admare. Now that she\u2019s awake, she\u2019s in a wak\u00ading night\u00admare: the pup\u00adpet that was the pup\u00adpeteer has returned and is mak\u00ading her his pup\u00adpet, ready to con\u00adtin\u00adue what he start\u00aded all those years ago.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Fuseli remarks \u201cThe nut don\u2019t fall far from the tree, do it?\u201d Zatan\u00adna<\/a>, when she was first a part of the Jus\u00adtice League of Amer\u00adi\u00adca, sowed the seeds of an even\u00adtu\u00adal cri\u00adsis with\u00adin the League by mys\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly caus\u00ading a num\u00adber of vil\u00adlains to for\u00adget some very con\u00adfi\u00adden\u00adtial infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the heroes, includ\u00ading their secret iden\u00adti\u00adties: when one hero refused to go along with the scheme, he was made to for\u00adget, too. It was a ret-conn that actu\u00adal\u00adly made sense for the time peri\u00adod and was the cause of a num\u00adber of seri\u00adous reper\u00adcus\u00adsions, includ\u00ading men\u00adtal insta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and loss of friend\u00adships and respect.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> As the first part of the sto\u00adry\u00adline (either two or three issues, hard to say) its hard to make any kind of rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion. The entire series is rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded, how\u00adev\u00ader, espe\u00adcial\u00adly the issues with her cousin Zachary<\/a> and the most recent one-shot sto\u00adry involv\u00ading the Mag\u00adic Museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cBatman Annual # 28\u201d<\/em> \u2014 \u2018All the Rage\u2019<\/em><\/h3>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Because of the events recount\u00aded in the pre\u00advi\u00adous major sto\u00adry\u00adline, the world now knows Bruce Wayne is behind the Bat\u00adman. Finan\u00adcial\u00adly, that is. And being the major financier and indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adist that he is, he is turn\u00ading his intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal prop\u00ader\u00adty into a fran\u00adchise. The \u201cBat\u00adman\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n

One of these fran\u00adchis\u00ades is in Paris, where the first major case involves \u2018Le Por\u00adtal d\u2019Or\u2019 (\u2018The Gold\u00aden Door\u2019) cult which is lead by a super\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal crea\u00adture called a Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan<\/a>. Tak\u00aden from French Bre\u00adton folk\u00adlore, the Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan<\/a> has the pow\u00ader to mesmerize.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir leader is a woman called Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan<\/strong>. She\u2019s named after a myth\u00adi\u00adcal crea\u00adture from French Bre\u00adton folk\u00adlore. A kind of siren who appears at night as a beau\u00adti\u00adful crea\u00adture with pale skin and red eyes. This crea\u00adture has the abil\u00adi\u00adty to mes\u00admer\u00adize<\/strong> her vic\u00adtim. Those who fall under her spell become her slaves \u2026 or her lovers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sent to infil\u00adtrate the cult is Renee Mon\u00adtoya<\/a>, now also known as The Ques\u00adtion<\/a>. She proves just as sus\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adble to the Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan\u2019s hyp\u00adnot\u00adic influ\u00adence as any\u00adone else and glad\u00adly reveals her infil\u00adtra\u00adtion, but she also pos\u00adsess\u00ades enough strength of will to resist the Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan\u2019s com\u00admand to com\u00admit sui\u00adcide. And against the pow\u00ader of two<\/em> Bat\u00admans (the orig\u00adi\u00adnal and the local fran\u00adchise) as well as the Ques\u00adtion, Le Por\u00adtal d\u2019Or and the Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan haven\u2019t a chance.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Bat\u00adman prob\u00ada\u00adbly knew that Renee would not be able to ini\u00adtial\u00adly resist the Kor\u00adri\u00adg\u00adan but would also pull through at the end.<\/p>\n
