In \u201cMag\u00adic Knight Rayearth\u201d<\/em><\/a>, three Japan\u00adese high school girls are trans\u00adport\u00aded to the fan\u00adta\u00adsy realm of Cephi\u00adro on a mis\u00adsion to save it and res\u00adcue Princess Emer\u00adaude from the grasp of the evil High Priest Zagato.<\/p>\n Except its not that easy, nor is it that cut-and-dried. Zaga\u00adto has a host of fol\u00adlow\u00aders to attack and divert the three girls on their mis\u00adsion to gain the pow\u00ader they need to com\u00adplete their task; in addi\u00adtion, there\u2019s anoth\u00ader sto\u00adry behind the one before them, one that will result in pain and suf\u00adfer\u00ading for all involved.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> \u201cMag\u00adic Knight Rayearth\u201d<\/em> is a man\u00adga and ani\u00adme series pro\u00adduced by the pro\u00adlif\u00adic CLAMP<\/a> pro\u00adduc\u00adtion com\u00adpa\u00adny, one of the biggest ani\u00adme and man\u00adga pro\u00adduc\u00adtion com\u00adpa\u00adnies in Japan. One of their best pro\u00adduc\u00adtions, I think, is Mag\u00adic Knight Rayearth, for rea\u00adsons that will be appar\u00adent soon.<\/p>\n [amtap book:isbn=1591820820]<\/p>\n [amtap book:isbn=1591820839]<\/p>\n [amtap amazon:asin=B0048EL8PA]<\/p>\n Mag\u00adic Knight Rayearth is the sto\u00adry of three Japan\u00adese high school girls, Umi Ryu\u00aduza\u00adki<\/a>, Fuu Houou\u00adji<\/a> and Hikaru Shi\u00addou<\/a>, who, on a class tour of Tokyo Tow\u00ader, are swept away to the land of Cephi\u00adro to become Mag\u00adic Knights and res\u00adcue Princess Emer\u00adaude from High Priest Zaga\u00adto. (But any\u00adone who has ever been inside Tokyo Tow\u00ader as I have know there is lit\u00adtle room for even one school tour of the obser\u00adva\u00adtion deck, let alone three.) At first they are con\u00adfused and reluc\u00adtant to believe their predica\u00adment, but they rapid\u00adly start believ\u00ading. And while they may be just school\u00adgirls, each does have some mar\u00adtial qual\u00adi\u00adty that enables them to sur\u00advive on Cephi\u00adro: red\u00adhead Hikaru\u2019s fam\u00adi\u00adly owns a kendo<\/em> dojo<\/em> so she is expe\u00adri\u00adenced wield\u00ading a sword, blue-haired Umi is the cap\u00adtain of the fenc\u00ading squad and can wield a sabre or foil, and blonde Fuu is on the archery team. Togeth\u00ader, they start on their quest to awak\u00aden the Man\u00adshin and gain the pow\u00ader of true Mag\u00adic Knights.<\/p>\n Along the way, they encounter oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion from Zaga\u00adto in the form of his min\u00adions, which includes Cal\u00add\u00adina the Charmer. Vain, self-cen\u00adtered and mer\u00adce\u00adnary, and those are her pos\u00adi\u00adtive qual\u00adi\u00adties. As a Charmer, she can entrance peo\u00adple with her danc\u00ading, and she can cast some pret\u00adty effec\u00adtive illu\u00adsions, as well. But her first assault, using only her illu\u00adsions, was ren\u00addered inef\u00adfec\u00adtive when the Knights saw through the illu\u00adsions. That\u2019s when she switch\u00ades tac\u00adtics and approach\u00ades them directly.<\/p>\n While Mag\u00adic Knight Fuu was seek\u00ading the Man\u00adshin Win\u00addom, Cal\u00add\u00adina approach\u00ades the oth\u00ader two Mag\u00adic Knights, lulling them off-guard with her charm\u00ading South\u00adern ways. (In the ani\u00adme, she speaks with a South\u00adern accent: South\u00adern as in Osa\u00adka, Japan. In the Eng\u00adlish dub, she does speak like a South\u00adern belle.) Then sud\u00adden\u00adly she turns on the oth\u00ader two Mag\u00adic Knights, danc\u00ading them into a trance accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic chim\u00ading of the bells in her slip\u00adpers, gloves and ear\u00adrings. (Trances always in ani\u00adme are rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded by the iris becom\u00ading a flat col\u00adored disk, with\u00adout pupil.)<\/p>\n When Fuu emerges, hav\u00ading been told by Win\u00addom that she must show the strength of her heart, she is attacked by Hikaru and Umi. Sweet, gen\u00adtle Fuu (def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly the Super\u00adego of the three) is com\u00adplete\u00adly unwill\u00ading to do any\u00adthing to harm her friends, so she reach\u00ades into her heart and casts a spell that immo\u00adbi\u00adlizes her friends in swirling whirl\u00adwinds. Then she turns on Cal\u00add\u00adina, who dances away. Because Fuu drew her own sword to attack Cal\u00add\u00adina, Cal\u00add\u00adina is able to enchant Fuu\u2019s arm to have her attack her friends. Fuu tries to resist, enough so that the wounds she inflicts are small, until Cal\u00add\u00adina tires of play\u00ading with her and com\u00admands her to strike. But what Cal\u00add\u00adina does not notice is the wind (Fuu\u2019s ele\u00adment, just as fire is Hikaru\u2019s and water is Umi\u2019s) ris\u00ading and rush\u00ading. Just as Cal\u00add\u00adina orders Fuu to strike her friends, Fuu\u2019s heart and love for her friends gives her the strength to resist Cal\u00add\u00adina\u2019s mag\u00adic, and she sends a tor\u00adna\u00addo of wind against her. That breaks Cal\u00add\u00adina\u2019s hold over her forever.<\/p>\n Cal\u00add\u00adina is impressed, and asks how long the three have been friends, such that she has such love for them and when Fuu replies that it has only been only a few days, Cal\u00add\u00adina does\u00adn\u2019t under\u00adstand. Fuu replies that the heart does not under\u00adstand time. Fuu also asks if Cal\u00add\u00adina would die for Zaga\u00adto, as Fuu would for her friends: the self-cen\u00adtered Cal\u00add\u00adina would hard\u00adly do that. Fuu\u2019s speech caus\u00ades Cal\u00add\u00adina to recon\u00adsid\u00ader her actions and she decides to leave and leave the Mag\u00adic Knights alone.<\/p>\n When it comes time for Hikaru\u2019s tri\u00adal, she must over\u00adcome the swords\u00adman Lafar\u00adga, who is under a spell of coer\u00adcion from Zaga\u00adto. A vast\u00adly supe\u00adri\u00ador swords\u00adman, Lafar\u00adga is posed to defeat Hikaru, and her friends are for\u00adbid\u00adden to inter\u00adfere, but when he grasps Hikaru\u2019s sword which bursts into flame. The shock and the pain break the spell he was under and Hikaru gains the pow\u00ader of the Manshin.<\/p>\n They con\u00adtin\u00adue on, even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading the ulti\u00admate rea\u00adson for them being sum\u00admoned: I won\u2019t explain, but its a tri\u00adal that no adult should be put through, let alone 14-year old girls. They find solace with each oth\u00ader, meet\u00ading at the same spot where they first went to Cephi\u00adro. Know\u00ading they left a world need\u00ading them and want\u00adi\u00adng to return, they are sur\u00adround\u00aded by anoth\u00ader flash of light and sud\u00adden\u00adly they are back in Cephiro.<\/p>\n But a very changed Cephiro.<\/p>\n Cephi\u00adro is rapid\u00adly suc\u00adcumb\u00ading to chaos. There is no Pil\u00adlar, which was Princess Emer\u00adaude, the one per\u00adson who main\u00adtained the bal\u00adance and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of the world. With\u00adout her, the world is falling apart, lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly into the void. One place remains sta\u00adble, the result of the willpow\u00ader of the remain\u00ading magi\u00adcians. When Hikaru, Umi and Fuu arrive, they are met by some old friends, includ\u00ading Cal\u00add\u00adina, who is now paired with Lafar\u00adga, as well as Guru Clef, Ascot and Ferio.<\/p>\n There is hope: the prophe\u00adcy says that anoth\u00ader Pil\u00adlar would be found to restore Cephi\u00adro, which has brought oth\u00aders seek\u00ading that pow\u00ader, and then the Mag\u00adic Knights arrive, although only the pow\u00ader of the Pil\u00adlar could have caused it.<\/p>\n In addi\u00adtion, three oth\u00ader king\u00addoms are vying to con\u00adquer Cephi\u00adro and become the Pil\u00adlar: mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic Autozam, Chi\u00adnese Impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal Chizeten and Ara\u00adbi\u00adan arabesque Fahren, and (in the ani\u00adme ver\u00adsion) a dark\u00ader threat is also unleased against Cephi\u00adro, one born from the dark\u00adness of the heart of one of the Mag\u00adic Knights. The Mag\u00adic Knights must don the Man\u00adshin once again to defend Cephi\u00adro until the one des\u00adtined to be the new Pil\u00adlar is found.<\/p>\n In the first such bat\u00adtle, Ascot tries to fol\u00adlow Umi out into bat\u00adtle, as he has a tremen\u00addous crush on her, so much that he used his own mag\u00adic to make him\u00adself old\u00ader. How\u00adev\u00ader, such a move would only dis\u00adtract the Mag\u00adic Knights and also be fruit\u00adless for him, as well. In order to pre\u00advent him, Cal\u00add\u00adina leaps before him and entrances him into a deep sleep.<\/p>\n With more foes, the sec\u00adond sea\u00adson of the series is twice as long as the first. Umi, Fuu and Hikaru take com\u00adfort and assis\u00adtance from their old friends and in true fash\u00adion, turn their ene\u00admies into friends as well. But all of the bat\u00adtles are noth\u00ading com\u00adpared to the tri\u00adal that will deter\u00admine the fate of the Pil\u00adlar, one that one of the Mag\u00adic Knights alone will pass. But that also means their loss, as they will irrev\u00ado\u00adca\u00adbly the lost as the Pil\u00adlar as Princess Emer\u00adaude was, and the oth\u00ader two Mag\u00adic Knights add their own will to free their com\u00adrade. In the end, the Pil\u00adlar revokes the pow\u00ader of the Pil\u00adlar, say\u00ading that the world is too big to be the respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for just one per\u00adson, that all should share that respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty so that no one should have to forego love as had the Princess.<\/p>\n With Cephi\u00adro safe, the three girls return to Earth, either nev\u00ader to return (as in the ani\u00adme) or able to return when\u00adver they wish (as in the man\u00adga). Either way, the wounds on their hearts were healed know\u00ading that even though their actions caused them grief, Cephi\u00adro ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u00aded: even Emer\u00adaude, in her last words unheard by the Mag\u00adic Knights, thanked them and wished they would not grieve for what they did. And with their sec\u00adond trip to Cephi\u00adro they were able to heal both their wounds and the world of Cephiro.<\/p>\n [amtap book:isbn=159182012X]<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Umi, Fuu and Hikaru are a typ\u00adi\u00adcal fic\u00adtion\u00adal three\u00adsome, exem\u00adpli\u00adfy\u00ading the Freudi\u00adan Ego, Super\u00adego and Id: Fuu is the com\u00adpas\u00adsion\u00adate one, the Ego; Umi is the proud one, the Super\u00adego and Hikaru is the pas\u00adsion\u00adate one, the Id. Each draws upon that in grow\u00ading as an individual.<\/p>\n The series should not be con\u00adfused with the three-part OVA release with the same name. The OVA sto\u00adry has the three girls defend\u00ading Earth from an inva\u00adsion by magi\u00adcians from Cephi\u00adro and aid\u00aded by Guru Clef in acquir\u00ading the Man\u00adshin with which they defeat the invaders.
