For those of you not famil\u00adiar with this lit\u00adtle curios\u00adi\u00adty of a movie, \u201cThe Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Eye\u201d is a B&W hor\u00adror movie from 1960 and fea\u00adtured a suave hyp\u00adno\u00adtist whose female sub\u00adjects all dis\u00adfig\u00adured them\u00adselves. It has been a minor quest of mine to locate a decent and legal copy of it for my col\u00adlec\u00adtion, but for years, the only copies avail\u00adable were obvi\u00adous boot\u00adleg copies of vary\u00ading quality.<\/p>\n
When I first was aware of the avail\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of the DVD through Ama\u00adzon, I was skep\u00adti\u00adcal about the qual\u00adi\u00adty, but it also was the only way to get a legit\u00adi\u00admate copy, so about two weeks ago I ordered a copy as a Christ\u00admas present for myself.<\/p>\n
Well, today, it arrived, and here\u2019s my reac\u00adtion to it.<\/p>\n

What makes this hor\u00adror movie par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly inter\u00adest\u00ading, besides the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis angle, is the fact that in order to add authen\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adty to the movie, the pro\u00adduc\u00aders hired famous stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist Gil Boyne to teach the actor play\u00ading the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist how to per\u00adform as a stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist on film. Boyne said that he even went to far as to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize the actress\u00ades who were to be hyp\u00adno\u00adtized on film into going into trance upon com\u00admand: he would stand behind the cam\u00adera dur\u00ading the induc\u00adtion scenes and put the actress into trance on cue.<\/p>\n
For years, this movie was unob\u00adtain\u00adable. Sev\u00ader\u00adal the\u00ado\u00adries were advanced why this one movie was ignored while oth\u00ader movies of the same genre, time peri\u00adod, qual\u00adi\u00adty, etc., were giv\u00aden the full treat\u00adment, but none have ever been proven. My the\u00ado\u00adry is that who\u00adev\u00ader owned the rights to it prob\u00ada\u00adbly did\u00adn\u2019t know they had them. That seems to have changed, for Ama\u00adzon to get into the busi\u00adness of pro\u00adduc\u00ading and mar\u00adket\u00ading a copy of the movie as a DVD. A print-on-demand DVD, which led me to believe it would be a quick and sim\u00adple ver\u00adsion of the movie with\u00adout any frills or extras.<\/p>\n
What I got was exact\u00adly as I pre\u00addict\u00aded, which was still some\u00adwhat of a dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00adment. The video qual\u00adi\u00adty is very good, giv\u00aden the age of the film and the prob\u00ada\u00adble qual\u00adi\u00adty of any remain\u00ading prints, and the case and DVD are actu\u00adal\u00adly nice\u00adly designed, but that\u2019s about it. There are no extras, no copies of trail\u00aders, no pages devot\u00aded to the his\u00adto\u00adry of the film or the actors and crew involved, not even a page with chap\u00adter selec\u00adtions. All in all, it looks exact\u00adly what I pre\u00addict\u00aded it would be, a very sim\u00adple trans\u00adfer from film to video file to DVD with\u00adout a lot of work devot\u00aded to adding any\u00adthing else of val\u00adue, or even locat\u00ading it. Which is a pity, as there is quite a lot of his\u00adto\u00adry and mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal that could be includ\u00aded with the DVD.<\/p>\n
That much I know, as I have man\u00adaged to col\u00adlect what I con\u00adsid\u00ader one of the largest col\u00adlec\u00adtions of mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal relat\u00aded to the movie, includ\u00ading presskits from both the US and Eng\u00adland, copies of the press pho\u00adtos with orig\u00adi\u00adnal descrip\u00adtions, poster cards and one sheets, etc. I even was giv\u00aden a num\u00adber of press and casu\u00adal images obtained by Gil Boyne when he was on the set, some of them in col\u00ador. There is so much I could have done with this DVD, and may, just for my own exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion and research into DVD production.<\/p>\n
