Biog\u00adra\u00adphy:<\/em> Pat Collins was cer\u00adtain\u00adly not the first female stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist. There were many oth\u00aders, but most have been forgotten<\/p>\n In the decade before Pat Collins there was a female stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist named Joan Bran\u00addon. In her books, she describes her\u00adself as a third-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, although it is prob\u00ada\u00adbly more pre\u00adcise to say she was a three-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion stage magi\u00adcian who was also a stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist. (Accord\u00ading to her books, her father was also a stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist but he is nev\u00ader iden\u00adti\u00adfied, so that is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to ver\u00adi\u00adfy.) About the only rea\u00adson she is remem\u00adbered now is that she is prob\u00ada\u00adbly the first to write and pub\u00adlish a num\u00adber of books on hyp\u00adno\u00adsis (which are list\u00aded below.)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> Besides her books, and some adver\u00adtise\u00adments in Bill\u00adboard<\/em> mag\u00ada\u00adzine, there is very lit\u00adtle addi\u00adtion\u00adal infor\u00adma\u00adtion about her avail\u00adable. Accord\u00ading to my research, she appears in an arti\u00adcle by Ralph Daigh in Look Mag\u00ada\u00adzine<\/em> July 10, 1956, enti\u00adtled \u2018Mys\u00adter\u00adies of Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u2019<\/em> which includes her. (Giv\u00aden the time frame, I would expect the arti\u00adcle was relat\u00aded to \u201cBridey Murphy\u201d.)<\/p>\n What I can tell from entries in Bill\u00adboard<\/em> mag\u00ada\u00adzine is that she ini\u00adtial\u00adly had a stage mag\u00adic act as far back as 1942 (here<\/a>) work\u00ading the cock\u00adtail bar cir\u00adcuit and con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00ading into 1950 (here<\/a>): its only lat\u00ader (at least 1956) that she is iden\u00adti\u00adfied as a stage hypnotist.<\/p>\n Her book \u201cHelp Your\u00adself Though Hyp\u00adno\u00adtism\u201d<\/em> says in her \u2018About the Author\u2019<\/em> section:<\/p>\n How\u00adev\u00ader, I was able to find this entry, from the per\u00adson\u00adal rem\u00adi\u00adnis\u00adcences of John Healy, here<\/a>:<\/p>\n Irv\u00ading Schreckinger was an attrac\u00adtive, qui\u00adet, dap\u00adper man with jet black hair, a pen\u00adcil mous\u00adtache and a deep cleft in his chin. \u2026 He lived with his moth\u00ader but had a long term rela\u00adtion\u00adship with a seri\u00adous shik\u00adsa<\/acronym> fan\u00adta\u00adsy in the per\u00adson of the stat\u00aduesque Joan Bran\u00addon, a blond pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal hyp\u00adno\u00adtist with, lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly, mes\u00admer\u00adiz\u00ading, slight\u00adly hyper-thy\u00adroid green eyes. Joan was gen\u00ader\u00adous\u00adly endowed and wore strap\u00adless dress\u00ades that left lit\u00adtle to the imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion and the two of them gave off a smol\u00adder\u00ading, qui\u00adet but des\u00adper\u00adate car\u00adnal\u00adi\u00adty in each oth\u00ader\u2019s com\u00adpa\u00adny. For my father\u2019s Christ\u00admas Eve birth\u00adday par\u00adty each year Irv would arrive first in his black Chester\u00adfield over\u00adcoat, accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading his moth\u00ader, an ele\u00adgant, tough old Jew\u00adish lady who liked to social\u00adize. Then he would escort her home and come back again with Joan to enjoy the rest of the evening. He promised Joan he would mar\u00adry her once his moth\u00ader passed away but Irv got throat can\u00adcer and died first and at the wake there were two lines for offer\u00ading con\u00addo\u00adlences, one for his moth\u00ader and one for Joan.<\/p>\n \u2026<\/p>\n The afore\u00admen\u00adtioned Joan Bran\u00addon taught me how to rip phone books in half at our caba\u00f1a there and how to pull table\u00adcloths out from under things, both of which caused a lot of mess and trou\u00adble as it became clear I did not have a nat\u00adur\u00adal tal\u00adent. At din\u00adner one evening in the main din\u00ading room she had us all stand back from a large round table set to the nines with many glass\u00ades and plates and can\u00addle sticks and she pulled the table\u00adcloth off in one brisk motion that left every\u00adthing stand\u00ading with hard\u00adly a shiver.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Accord\u00ading to my research, Irv\u00ading Schreckinger<\/a> was at one time Joan\u2019s attor\u00adney before becom\u00ading a judge on the Bronx City Court.<\/p>\n Anoth\u00ader inter\u00adest\u00ading entry I dis\u00adcov\u00adered was in \u201cPho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic Light\u00ading<\/em>\u201d (pub\u00adlished 1971, Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic Book Club) which has an entry<\/a> on shoot\u00ading an impromp\u00adtu demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of stage hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. The entry may include copies of the images tak\u00aden but the lim\u00adit\u00aded entry found does\u00adn\u2019t include them.<\/p>\n She also appears to been one of the guests on \u201cLong John\u201d Nebbel\u2019s radio pro\u00adgram \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u201d on Feb\u00adru\u00adary 5, 1967, along with guests Richard Kollmer (ambigu\u00adous: a per\u00adson with this name was a sur\u00advivor of the Hin\u00adden\u00adberg<\/em> dis\u00adas\u00adter while anoth\u00ader played \u201cBoston Black\u00adie\u201d on the radio), Joseph Lam\u00adpl (hyp\u00adno\u00adtist who pro\u00adduced a hyp\u00adno\u00adsis record on stop\u00adping smok\u00ading), James Don\u00adnel\u00adly (hyp\u00adnother\u00ada\u00adpist?) and John Kol\u00adish (hyp\u00adno\u00adtist).<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Every one of her books has an exten\u00adsive col\u00adlec\u00adtion of pho\u00adtographs from her stage shows, all of which denote that she was a suc\u00adcess\u00adful stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and a stun\u00adning beau\u00adty as well.
