What can you do when you have the pow\u00ader of life and death, espe\u00adcial\u00adly trace\u00adless, unstop\u00adpable death, over any\u00adone you can name? In \u201cDeath Note\u201d<\/a>, Light Yaga\u00admi dis\u00adcov\u00aders that despite his best (and worst) inten\u00adtions, no real good can come of it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/i> When Light Yaga\u00admi<\/a>, a over-intel\u00adli\u00adgent and bored stu\u00addent dis\u00adcov\u00aders a \u201cDeath Note\u201d, the note book of the shiniga\u00admi<\/em><\/a> (or death god) Ryuk<\/a>, he dis\u00adcov\u00aders that he can kill any\u00adone trace\u00adless\u00adly whose name he enters in the book. Using that pow\u00ader, he begins killing crim\u00adi\u00adnals, start\u00ading from the death row inmates and work\u00ading his way down to less\u00ader offens\u00ades, even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly reveal\u00ading his plans to cre\u00adate a crime\u00adless new world order with him as its absolute moral decider.<\/p>\n

Most impor\u00adtant\u00adly, Light (known pub\u00adlicly as \u201cKira\u201d which is short for the Japan\u00adese pro\u00adnun\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of \u201ckiller\u201d) dis\u00adcov\u00aders that he can even some\u00adwhat con\u00adtrol the events sur\u00adround\u00ading the per\u00adson\u00ad\u2019s death, includ\u00ading forc\u00ading them to com\u00admit what\u00adev\u00ader acts he describes in the Death Note so long as they pre\u00adcede their death by a short time. Light uses this pow\u00ader to force peo\u00adple who get too close to his secret to com\u00admit sui\u00adcide or kill oth\u00aders who may also know his secret.<\/p>\n

Of course the legal estab\u00adlish\u00adment does not appre\u00adci\u00adate his assis\u00adtance, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when he starts killing the police offi\u00adcers inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the killings. That\u2019s when the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous detec\u00adtive known only as \u201cL\u201d<\/a> comes to aid the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion. Since Light can\u00adnot dis\u00adcov\u00ader \u201cL\u201c \u2018s name, he can\u00adnot write it into his Death Note, and since \u201cL\u201d sus\u00adpects Light as being Kira but can\u00adnot prove it because he does not know about the Death Note, the two begin a cat-and-mouse game with the end game lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly mean\u00ading the end of the loser.<\/p>\n

\u201cL\u201d is as much an genius and lon\u00ader as Light, and the two play their game for a long time, but in the end, Light dis\u00adcov\u00aders his name (with the aid of Misa Amane<\/a> who also pos\u00adsessed a Death Note and trad\u00aded half of her life for the pow\u00ader to see any\u00adone\u2019s name and life expectan\u00adcy) and writes it into his Death Note. Upon \u201cL\u201c \u2018s death, Light takes over the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion into Kira, but \u201cL\u201d was pre\u00adpared for even that even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty and left a timed mes\u00adsage in case of his death.<\/p>\n

Four years lat\u00ader, time is start\u00ading to run out on Light. Anoth\u00ader grad\u00adu\u00adate of the same orphan\u00adage as \u201cL\u201d comes on the scene, anoth\u00ader, much younger, lon\u00ader genius armed with \u201cL\u201c \u2018s sus\u00adpi\u00adcions. Oth\u00aders now sus\u00adpect Light as well. Light, on his part, starts groom\u00ading a suc\u00adces\u00adsor (and pos\u00adsi\u00adble scape\u00adgoat) but the plan goes awry and the police are able to sub\u00adsti\u00adtute a fake Death Note which Light uses to try to kill every\u00adone around him. When that fails, Light flees, try\u00ading to escape long-delayed jus\u00adtice, but Ryuk reminds Light of the fate of all human Death Note users, obliv\u00adion, and writes Light\u2019s name in his own Death Note.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> The man\u00adga series and accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading ani\u00adme series was extreme\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar, even to the point of two Japan\u00adese live-action movies pro\u00adduced (one spent two weeks as num\u00adber 1 at the box office) based on the series (and an spin-off movie based on \u201cL\u201d) and an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan movie in pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. The man\u00adga itself sold over 26 mil\u00adlion copies, and the Eng\u00adlish trans\u00adla\u00adtion was list\u00aded as one of the top ten graph\u00adic nov\u00adels for teens by the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Library Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion in 2007. \u201cDeath Note\u201d has also been the sub\u00adject of a very large num\u00adber of fan fic\u00adtion stories.<\/p>\n

On a dark\u00ader note, there have also been at least one \u201ccopy\u00adcat\u201d crime and a num\u00adber of inci\u00addents involv\u00ading stu\u00addents pos\u00adsess\u00ading Death Note note\u00adbooks car\u00adry\u00ading names of their class\u00admates. It has also been banned in cer\u00adtain areas of Chi\u00adna for sim\u00adi\u00adlar reasons.<\/p>\n
