His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> \u201cThe Wild, Wild West\u201d<\/em><\/a> was a reac\u00adtion to the spy craze in pop\u00adu\u00adlar cul\u00adture with a West\u00adern twist with a healthy dose of Jules Verne added. The series was an instant hit when it appeared in 1965: it did\u00adn\u2019t hurt that there was a cul\u00adture tran\u00adsi\u00adtion tak\u00ading place between the fad\u00ading West\u00adern genre and the new spy craze engen\u00addered by the James Bond films and TV series like \u201cThe Man From U.N.C.L.E.\u201d<\/em> and \u201cThe Avengers\u201d<\/em>. But it also did\u00adn\u2019t hurt that the two main char\u00adac\u00adters, as well as some of their re-occur\u00adring oppo\u00adnents, were strong, mem\u00ado\u00adrable characters.<\/p>\n

Colonel James West (Robert Con\u00adrad<\/a>) and Artemis Gor\u00addon (Ross Mar\u00adtin<\/a>) were Secret Ser\u00advice agents patrolling the West in their pri\u00advate rail\u00adway train on spe\u00adcial orders from Pres\u00adi\u00addent Grant. The ath\u00adlet\u00adic and dash\u00ading West (Con\u00adrad did many of his own stunts) paired excep\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly well with the clever and debonair Gor\u00addon as they bat\u00adtled insid\u00adi\u00adous crim\u00adi\u00adnal orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions, would-be con\u00adquerors, malev\u00ado\u00adlent sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic genius\u00ades and hos\u00adtile for\u00adeign pow\u00aders to pro\u00adtect the Unit\u00aded States in its dif\u00adfi\u00adcult times after the Civ\u00adil War. <\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> \u2018The Night of the Steel Assas\u00adsin\u2019<\/em><\/a> opens with a mur\u00adder, one of a series, it turns out. West, inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the series of mur\u00adders, arrives just in time to see the mur\u00adder, a man named Tor\u00adres (John Dehn\u00ader<\/a>) who not only pos\u00adsessed incred\u00adi\u00adble strength but was dis\u00adfig\u00adured with steel plates mount\u00aded on his face. Tor\u00adres proved too strong (and too well armored) for West and eas\u00adi\u00adly man\u00adages to escapes.<\/p>\n

The rea\u00adson West was inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading was that the mur\u00addered man, Gilbert, along with all the oth\u00ader mur\u00addered men, had a con\u00adnec\u00adtion: each were offi\u00adcers of a mil\u00adi\u00adtary unit dur\u00ading the Civ\u00adil War, and now only two remain: Tor\u00adres and Pres\u00adi\u00addent Grant. That, of course, makes this the busi\u00adness of the Secret Ser\u00advice. Gor\u00addon inves\u00adti\u00adgates Tor\u00adres and dis\u00adcov\u00aders his secret: he was hor\u00adri\u00adbly maimed by an acci\u00addent dur\u00ading the Civ\u00adil War, and, through implan\u00adta\u00adtion of met\u00adal pros\u00adthe\u00adses, includ\u00ading the steel plates on his face, he was not only able to walk but also able to enact his revenge.<\/p>\n

That acci\u00addent was also the cause for his desire for revenge: a group of offi\u00adcers (includ\u00ading Grant) drew cards to see who would stand watch that night. Tor\u00adres drew a Jack, but all the rest drew high\u00ader: the odds are astro\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal for this to hap\u00adpen, and Tor\u00adres was con\u00advinced they cheat\u00aded. While he was on duty, a cache of explo\u00adsives explod\u00aded and Tor\u00adres was hor\u00adri\u00adbly maimed and dis\u00adfig\u00adured. Now he is tak\u00ading his revenge against the men who should have tak\u00aden his place. His reha\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtion was gru\u00adel\u00ading, and his self-con\u00adtrol (through \u201cauto-sug\u00adges\u00adtion\u201d) was impres\u00adsive: not only was he con\u00adscious dur\u00ading the surgery, he even direct\u00aded parts of it.<\/p>\n

Not know\u00ading that he is the mur\u00adder\u00ader, the daugh\u00adter of the last mur\u00adder vic\u00adtim, Nina Gilbert (Sue Ann Lang\u00addon<\/a>), vis\u00adits him to warn him.Torres dis\u00adtracts her with a bright light and a rotat\u00ading shade that flash\u00ades the light in Nina\u2019s eyes, all the while talk\u00ading about age regres\u00adsion. Nina even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly suc\u00adcumbs to his sug\u00adges\u00adtions and becomes a gid\u00addy, child-like saloon dancer.<\/p>\n

West and Gor\u00addon track Tor\u00adres to a South\u00adwest\u00adern town where Pres\u00adi\u00addent Grant is to be appear\u00ading soon. Gor\u00addon is cap\u00adtured and giv\u00aden the same hyp\u00adnot\u00adic treat\u00adment as Nina, but he knows enough to fake being hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, at the cost of hav\u00ading a nee\u00addle thrust into his shoul\u00adder to prove he was entranced. West, too, would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly be cap\u00adtured, set to die by an explo\u00adsive rock\u00adet, just as is Pres\u00adi\u00addent Grant (actu\u00adal\u00adly Gor\u00addon in dis\u00adguise, a trick he would often employ) but West man\u00adages to divert the rock\u00adets. Chas\u00ading Tor\u00adres down, West is unable to hurt him but is able to throw him into an under\u00adground pool: Tor\u00adres\u2019 increased weight prove too much as he sinks beneath the sur\u00adface and drowns.<\/p>\n

As for Nina, Gor\u00addon recov\u00aders Tor\u00adres\u2019 hyp\u00adnot\u00adic lamp and she is quick\u00adly returned to her old self. A very annoyed self, see\u00ading her\u00adself still provoca\u00adtive\u00adly dressed as a dancer and not as the prim and prop\u00ader lady she actu\u00adal\u00adly is. West and Gor\u00addon have to duck a hail of flung objects as the episode ends.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> The hyp\u00adno\u00adsis here is only slight\u00adly stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal: Nina suc\u00adcumbs main\u00adly because of Tor\u00adres\u2019 almost NLP-like induc\u00adtion, where\u00adas Artemis was able to resist while act\u00ading entranced, main\u00adly because he was famil\u00adiar with the tech\u00adnique. As for the grav\u00adel\u00adly-voiced Tor\u00adres, John Dehn\u00ader was a well-estab\u00adlished actor with many appear\u00adances in West\u00aderns, includ\u00ading star\u00adring in the series \u201cPal\u00adadin\u201d<\/em> so it is no won\u00adder that he appears in this episode. His career spanned over 40 years in TV, movies and voice acting.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> I loved the series when it was first aired and it still holds up today. The Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan gad\u00adgetry, the baroque vil\u00adlains, the casu\u00adal inter\u00adplay between the two actors and their char\u00adac\u00adters, the under\u00adstand\u00ading that Gor\u00addon was just as impor\u00adtant a mem\u00adber of the team as West (while West could hold his own in most sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions, there were still times when Gor\u00addon had to come to save him, and it was assumed that Gor\u00addon was the cre\u00adator of many of the gad\u00adgets West used so effec\u00adtive\u00adly) all com\u00adbine for an enjoy\u00adable time.<\/p>\n

I also rec\u00adom\u00admend this par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar episode. This is one where the B&W for\u00admat helps the sto\u00adry: the stark light\u00ading adds to the mood at the begin\u00adning, as does the music. There\u2019s enough action and escapes to sat\u00adis\u00adfy most any view\u00ader who can over\u00adlook some of the slow areas of the plot. All total, I give this episode 3 1\/2 spi\u00adrals out of 5. Cred\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis gets 3 1\/2 spi\u00adrals while the sto\u00adry itself gets 3 spi\u00adrals. I have to give the scenes of the hyp\u00adno\u00adtized and regressed Nina 4 spi\u00adrals, though.<\/p>\n
