The first half of the mag\u00ada\u00adzine, includ\u00ading the part quot\u00aded above, begins with the arti\u00adcle by Wal\u00adter Hale enti\u00adtled \u2018Love and Pas\u00adsion Under Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u2019<\/em> which is most\u00adly a retelling of the sex\u00adu\u00adal stereo\u00adtypes of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, told in a rather breath\u00adless man\u00adner. It also includes the following:<\/p>\n

It will be impos\u00adsi\u00adble for you to com\u00admit any act that is con\u00adtrary to your bet\u00adter nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is unadul\u00adter\u00adat\u00aded BUNK!<\/p>\n

The fol\u00adlow\u00ading arti\u00adcle, \u2018You Can Become a Hyp\u00adno\u00adtist\u2019<\/em> is a short, step-by-step expla\u00adna\u00adtion of how to set up an induc\u00adtion with\u00adout actu\u00adal\u00adly explain\u00ading how to per\u00adform an induc\u00adtion. Instead, it leads back to the over\u00adall theme of hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading women into sex bu segue\u00ading to pseu\u00addo\u00adny\u00admous hyp\u00adno\u00adtist Dun\u00adcan (\u201cfrankly a rogue and a lech\u00ader\u201d) explain\u00ading how he is able to get women to undress under hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. Its the same song in a first per\u00adson key. Then is goes on to how to<\/p>\n

The last arti\u00adcle of this sec\u00adtion is enti\u00adtled \u201dWill Hyp\u00adno\u00adtism Cure Homo\u00adsex\u00adu\u00adals?\u2019<\/em> which is a one-page arti\u00adcle more about the pow\u00ader of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and post-hyp\u00adnot\u00adic sug\u00adges\u00adtion than any sub\u00adstan\u00adtial infor\u00adma\u00adtion about actu\u00adal\u00adly \u2018cur\u00ading\u2019 homosexuality.<\/p>\n

Fol\u00adlow\u00ading that is a three-page reprint\u00aded news\u00adpa\u00adper sto\u00adry about stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist Fran\u00adquin and a show he per\u00adformed in Syd\u00adney com\u00adplete with sev\u00ader\u00adal pic\u00adtures: in fact, aside from a cou\u00adple of para\u00adgraphs, all three pages are pho\u00adtographs from the show. The arti\u00adcle does not include any attri\u00adbu\u00adtion but it is pret\u00adty obvi\u00adous that it was lift\u00aded, prob\u00ada\u00adbly from an Aus\u00adtralian news\u00adpa\u00adper, which would have made any legal action dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to pursue.<\/p>\n

The sec\u00adond half of the mag\u00ada\u00adzine starts off with a total\u00adly unre\u00adlat\u00aded 3\u2011page piece by \u201ca fear\u00adless sopho\u00admore\u201d enti\u00adtled \u2018I Was a Hot Pantie Snatch\u00ader<\/em>\u2019, try\u00ading to tie it back to the over\u00adall theme with the sub\u00adti\u00adtle \u2018Mass Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in Dar\u00ading<\/span><\/em> Raid\u2019 with\u00adout any kind of jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion for the con\u00adnec\u00adtion. This was fol\u00adlowed by a 6\u2011page arti\u00adcle enti\u00adtled \u2018Secrets of Star\u00ading Men\u2019<\/em> (with the sub\u00adti\u00adtle \u2018Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis Craze: How Much Hum\u00adbug?\u2019) which is actu\u00adal\u00adly a sim\u00adple descrip\u00adtion of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis: the arti\u00adcle is illus\u00adtrat\u00aded with sev\u00ader\u00adal clip-part pho\u00adtographs of wom\u00aden\u2019s faces or art\u00adwork of naked women, includ\u00ading one of a wom\u00adan\u2019s face, lit from below, that invokes a stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal image of some\u00adone entranced.<\/p>\n

After that, there are 3 \u00bd pages of nude or semi-nude pho\u00adtographs or art, fol\u00adlowed by 8 \u00bd pages of adver\u00adtise\u00adments typ\u00adi\u00adcal for the back of men\u2019s mag\u00ada\u00adzines of the day, includ\u00ading many, many ads for racy 8 mm movies, books on sex knowl\u00adedge and pho\u00adto sets. The back cov\u00ader shows a full-page pic\u00adture of a brunette in a biki\u00adni on a zebra-skin back\u00adground, with the phrase \u201cPro\u00adfuse\u00adly Illus\u00adtrat\u00aded with Uncen\u00adsored Photos\u201d.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Over\u00adall, there is a lot of tit\u00adil\u00adla\u00adtion and very lit\u00adtle prac\u00adti\u00adcal infor\u00adma\u00adtion to be found here. At no time is any kind of induc\u00adtion actu\u00adal\u00adly shown or described, or any oth\u00ader infor\u00adma\u00adtion about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. There isn\u2019t even a list of ref\u00ader\u00adence books for fur\u00adther infor\u00adma\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, the sex\u00adism (almost req\u00adui\u00adsite giv\u00aden the soci\u00adety at that time) through\u00adout the mag\u00ada\u00adzine is pret\u00adty open, which should come as no sur\u00adprise at all. Also, the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist is always referred to as \u201che\u201d which also rein\u00adforces the sexism.<\/p>\n

As for the art\u00adwork, it is ques\u00adtion\u00adable whether the mod\u00adel on the cov\u00ader or any\u00adwhere else is actu\u00adal\u00adly hyp\u00adno\u00adtized: there are no images of the induc\u00adtion itself, nor any infor\u00adma\u00adtion about who did the induc\u00adtion. The only pos\u00adsi\u00adbly rec\u00adog\u00adniz\u00adable image of some\u00adone hyp\u00adno\u00adtized shows the mod\u00adel pas\u00adsive\u00adly stand\u00ading erect, eyes closed and her arm out\u00adstretched as if per\u00adform\u00ading an arm-rigid\u00adi\u00adty test. Much of the oth\u00ader accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading art\u00adwork is sim\u00adply gener\u00adic pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy or clip art.<\/p>\n

I was just sur\u00adprised at how ama\u00adteur the lay\u00adout was and how shod\u00addy the pho\u00adtos and art\u00adwork accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading it were. The mag\u00ada\u00adzine is print\u00aded on three dif\u00adfer\u00adent types of paper, one of which is a pale blue in col\u00ador. The whole mag\u00ada\u00adzine looks like it was pieced togeth\u00ader from mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal from oth\u00ader sources com\u00adbined with at least one unat\u00adtrib\u00aduted news\u00adpa\u00adper arti\u00adcle. The biggest give\u00adaway is the copy\u00adright state\u00adment. That was def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly and clum\u00adsi\u00adly typed on a type\u00adwriter, with cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adiza\u00adtion and spac\u00ading errors, sub\u00adsti\u00adtut\u00ading a cap\u00adi\u00adtal \u201cI\u201d for a \u201c1\u201d, etc. The most amus\u00ading part is the final line: \u201cThe motion pic\u00adture of the same titme is now in prepa\u00adra\u00adtion.\u201d And this from the author, who I must assume is Wal\u00adter Hale, say\u00ading they are the pub\u00adlish\u00ader of two mag\u00ada\u00adzines, \u201cHol\u00adly\u00adwood Con\u00adfi\u00adden\u00adtial\u201d and \u201cPlay\u00adgirl\u201d.<\/p>\n

And I should note that the writer uses the term \u201cOper\u00ada\u00adtor\u201d (cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adized) instead of \u201chyp\u00adno\u00adtist\u201d in var\u00adi\u00adous places, which sug\u00adgests that Hale was the author of the arti\u00adcles in ques\u00adtion. The term \u201cOper\u00ada\u00adtor\u201d here has cer\u00adtain shady con\u00adno\u00adta\u00adtions and is obvi\u00adous\u00adly used to engen\u00adder the idea of sub\u00adtle or covert hyp\u00adno\u00adsis to bypass any expect\u00aded resistance.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Only for the seri\u00adous col\u00adlec\u00adtor of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis ephemera, right along with \u201cHow to Pick Up Girls With Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Triv\u00adia:<\/em> This pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion con\u00adtains over eight pages of ads in the back, the same as would be found in any men\u2019s mag\u00ada\u00adzine of the time peri\u00adod (1956). How\u00adev\u00ader, what is inter\u00adest\u00ading is that ads for books on hyp\u00adno\u00adsis were rare but still includ\u00aded in these mag\u00ada\u00adzines, no such ads were in this pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion. And also, judg\u00ading from that lack and the cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading lack of any sub\u00adstan\u00adtial men\u00adtion of Bridey Mur\u00adphy in the text is that this was writ\u00adten before the Bridey Mur\u00adphy phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon gained promi\u00adnence but rushed into pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion at that time.<\/p>\n

Appar\u00adent\u00adly, the mag\u00ada\u00adzine (even though it is quite tame by even most stan\u00addards) was found obscene although it appears from the list\u00ading here<\/a> that deci\u00adsion was reversed upon appeal.<\/p>\n
