Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Sideshow stage hyp\u00adno\u00adtist Dr. Car\u00adlo Lom\u00adbar\u00addi (Chester Mor\u00adris<\/a>) becomes well known for the on-stage past-life regres\u00adsion of and evo\u00adca\u00adtion of ecto\u00adplasm from Andrea, his assis\u00adtant (Mar\u00adla Eng\u00adlish<\/a>). The book he writes of her regres\u00adsion, \u201cThe Sto\u00adry of Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Weath\u00ader\u00adby\u201d<\/em>, becomes a nation\u00adal best\u00adseller. He takes her on tour, per\u00adform\u00ading in the\u00adaters and for din\u00adner par\u00adties, where he begins to pre\u00addict hor\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading murders.<\/p>\n In real\u00adi\u00adty, Dr. Lom\u00adbar\u00addi is regress\u00ading Andrea into a pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric life and evok\u00ading the ecto\u00adplas\u00admic form of that incar\u00adna\u00adtion from her, then order\u00ading the form to com\u00admit a series of mur\u00adders for unclear motives, prob\u00ada\u00adbly revenge. One such demon\u00adstra\u00adtion is at a soci\u00adety par\u00adty host\u00aded by Mrs. Chap\u00adpel (Cathy Downs<\/a>): there, Lom\u00adbar\u00addi puts Andrea through a series of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic acts, to demon\u00adstrate his con\u00adtrol for the observ\u00ading Dr. Erick\u00adson (Lance Fuller<\/a>).<\/p>\n Dr. Lom\u00adbar\u00addi final\u00adly meets jus\u00adtice when Erick\u00adson helps Andrea devel\u00adop the will to resist him. Lom\u00adbar\u00addi orders Andrea to mur\u00adder Erick\u00adson, but she is unable to com\u00adply, which turns the ecto\u00adplas\u00admic form against Dr. Lom\u00adbar\u00addi with fatal results. As Lom\u00adbar\u00addi dies, he releas\u00ades Andrea from his pow\u00ader and the She-Crea\u00adture dis\u00adap\u00adpears, wad\u00ading into the ocean, nev\u00ader to return.<\/p>\n His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> \u201cThe She-Crea\u00adture\u201d<\/em><\/a> was pro\u00adduced by Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Pic\u00adtures<\/a>, famous for pro\u00adduc\u00ading a long series of low-bud\u00adget movies, includ\u00ading teen-ori\u00adent\u00aded, rock&roll movies and hor\u00adror movies. They were also known for pro\u00adduc\u00ading Roger Cor\u00adman\u2019s adap\u00adta\u00adtions of Edgar Allan Poe.<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> \u201cThe She-Crea\u00adture\u201d<\/em> owes its ori\u00adgin and pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty to the Bridey Mur\u00adphy<\/a> phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon. \u201cThe Search for Bridey Mur\u00adphy\u201d<\/em> was pub\u00adlished by Den\u00adver busi\u00adness\u00adman Morey Bern\u00adstein, whose curios\u00adi\u00adty about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis led him to prac\u00adtice on friends and neigh\u00adbors, one of whom man\u00adi\u00adfest\u00aded a past-life regres\u00adsion about her life in Ire\u00adland as Bridey Mur\u00adphy. The phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon was so wide spread and includ\u00aded songs, books and even rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adtion par\u00adties, which were even report\u00aded with an arti\u00adcle in Life Magazine.<\/p>\n And it should be not\u00aded that, despite the adver\u00adtise\u00adments, the movie does not involve rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adtion direct\u00adly except as the con\u00adnec\u00adtion between Andrea and the She-Crea\u00adture. The actu\u00adal man\u00adi\u00adfes\u00adta\u00adtion of the She-Crea\u00adture is pro\u00adduced by Dr. Lom\u00adbar\u00addi using Andrea as a spir\u00adit medium.<\/p>\n Triv\u00adia:<\/em> What is sur\u00adpris\u00ading to dis\u00adcov\u00ader that many of the roles were orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly going to be played by oth\u00aders. The role of Lom\u00adbar\u00addi was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly going to be played by Peter Lor\u00adrie<\/a>! Lor\u00adrie\u2019s agent had com\u00admit\u00adted the actor to the role, but then Lor\u00adrie read the script and did\u00adn\u2019t want any\u00adthing to do with the movie. He even fired his agent over the con\u00adflict. Actor Edward Arnold<\/a>, who had played unscrupu\u00adlous busi\u00adness\u00admen in the past, was also to play the part of Chap\u00adpel, but he died before film\u00ading began, and was replaced by Tom Con\u00adway<\/a>. Actor \u201cTouch\u201d Con\u00adnors<\/a> (lat\u00ader Mike Con\u00adnors of \u201cMan\u00adnix\u201d<\/em>) was a con\u00adtract play\u00ader at AIP and was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly to be the love inter\u00adest, but the role was lat\u00ader giv\u00aden to Lance Fuller.<\/p>\n Direc\u00adtor Edward L. Cahn<\/a> nick\u00adnamed \u201c50 movies a year\u201d and was known for gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading a num\u00adber of low-bud\u00adget movies. He would direct 125 in his 30 year career, many of them short subjects.<\/p>\n Chester Mor\u00adris<\/a> was also a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal stage magi\u00adcian, tour\u00ading dur\u00ading WW II with his wife Lili for USO. He is also known for play\u00ading the char\u00adac\u00adter Bostom Black\u00adie in a series of low-bud\u00adget movies. It was report\u00aded in Vari\u00adety<\/i> that Mor\u00adris\u2019s Bryl\u00adcreem<\/a> expens\u00ades exceed\u00aded any oth\u00ader item in the film\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n Sul\u00adtry Mar\u00adla Eng\u00adlish<\/a> had a short act\u00ading career from 1954\u20131957 in a num\u00adber of low bud\u00adget movies from AIP. Intest\u00ading\u00adly enough, she would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly work with Mike Con\u00adnors, anoth\u00ader AIP con\u00adtract play\u00ader, in at least one movie. In 1956, she retired upon becom\u00ading engaged to a San Diego busi\u00adness\u00adman: she was only 21 at the time.<\/p>\n The She-Crea\u00adture cos\u00adtume was cre\u00adat\u00aded by mas\u00adter crea\u00adture-cre\u00adator Paul Blais\u00addell<\/a>. who also wore the suit for the movie. After Blais\u00addell had fin\u00adished the cos\u00adtume, the stu\u00addio exec\u00adu\u00adtives had him mod\u00adi\u00adfy it to include breasts: breasts, on a pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric lizard crea\u00adture. Also, at one point, Blais\u00addell was required to walk out into the surf to shoot a scene. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, the suit was make of foam rub\u00adber and it absorbed so much water that it was extreme\u00adly heavy (heav\u00adier) and dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to walk in. Plus, the scene shot was not used in the movie. Blais\u00addell would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly become dis\u00aden\u00adchant\u00aded with work\u00ading in the movies and left the busi\u00adness, although he would col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrate with fel\u00adlow hor\u00adror movie fan Bob Burns in a short-lived mag\u00ada\u00adzine enti\u00adtled \u201cFan\u00adtas\u00adtic Mon\u00adsters of the Films\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n The art\u00adwork for the movie, show\u00ading the men\u00adac\u00ading fig\u00adure of the She-Crea\u00adture and Andrea in her diapho\u00adnous white robes (which she did wear in the movie) was paint\u00aded by artist Albert Kallis, who super\u00advised AIP\u2019s poster pro\u00adduc\u00adtion from 1955\u20131973. He was hand-picked by Roger Cor\u00adman for the posi\u00adtion of art direc\u00adtor at AIP. Kallis is also one of the founders of the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal House of Pan\u00adcakes chain. He has also worked as exec\u00adu\u00adtive pro\u00adduc\u00ader for a wide vari\u00adety of non-prof\u00adit documentaries.<\/p>\n \u201cThe She-Crea\u00adture\u201d<\/em> was not the only movie to take advan\u00adtage of the phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon: there were two oth\u00ader movies of the same time peri\u00adod direct\u00adly relat\u00aded to the sub\u00adject of rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adtion, \u201cThe Search For Bridey Mur\u00adphry\u201d<\/em>, a dra\u00adma\u00adtized ver\u00adsion of the book, and \u201cThe Undead\u201d<\/em>, a Roger Cor\u00adman quick\u00adie pro\u00adduced to also take afvan\u00adtage of the phenonemon.<\/p>\n The movie also appeared on Mys\u00adtery Sci\u00adence The\u00adater 3000, episode 808<\/a>.<\/p>\n Note:<\/em> Do not con\u00adfuse this movie with the 2002 movie of the same name, also known as \u201cThe Mer\u00admaid Chron\u00adi\u00adcles\u201d<\/em><\/a>, pro\u00adduced by Roger Cor\u00adman for the HBO cable net\u00adwork.
