All across the world, peo\u00adple are devel\u00adop\u00ading super-pow\u00aders, and the estab\u00adlished super-pow\u00adered beings are nowhere to be found. Called \u201csparks\u201d and the phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon \u201cspark\u00ading\u201d, it is turn\u00ading the world into a super bat\u00adtle\u00adground as gangs of sparks bat\u00adtle for turf. Its a dream of some, of hav\u00ading super-pow\u00aders, that is turn\u00ading into a night\u00admare for the entire world.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Per\u00adry White, the edi\u00adtor of the Dai\u00adly Plan\u00adet<\/em>, has his best reporter, Clark Kent (Super\u00adman<\/a>), assigned to the sto\u00adry, but even Kent is hav\u00ading trou\u00adble with it: for some rea\u00adson, he is feel\u00ading out of sorts, dis\u00adas\u00adso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with him\u00adself. He\u2019s not alone: comics artist Kyle Rayn\u00ader (Kyle Rayn\u00ader<\/a>) is behind on his art\u00adwork assign\u00adments, his imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion fail\u00ading him; stu\u00addent Wal\u00adly West (Wal\u00adly West<\/a>) is habit\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly late for class; cor\u00adpo\u00adrate suit Adam Cur\u00adry (Aqua\u00adman<\/a>) feels he does\u00adn\u2019t belong as vice-pres\u00adi\u00addent of a com\u00adpa\u00adny; and instruc\u00adtor Diana Prince (Won\u00adder Woman<\/a>) sur\u00adpris\u00ades her\u00adself when one of her stu\u00addents sud\u00adden\u00adly \u201csparks\u201d and Diana equal\u00adly as sud\u00adden\u00adly dis\u00adplays super-strength in defend\u00ading the oth\u00ader stu\u00addents from her \u201cspark\u201d stu\u00adden\u00adt\u2019s acci\u00adden\u00adtal rampage.<\/p>\n But the worst off is Bruce Wayne (Bat\u00adman<\/a>): he knows some\u00adthing is wrong, ter\u00adri\u00adbly wrong, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when his par\u00adents show up, trig\u00adger\u00ading dread images of the dark alley in which his par\u00adents were bru\u00adtal\u00adly mur\u00addered. He knows<\/em> that he is liv\u00ading a lie but he needs some\u00adthing to help him break out of it. Some\u00adthing, or some\u00adone, and that some\u00adone is Super\u00adman, hav\u00ading bro\u00adken out of his own night\u00admare at the sight of the globe atop the Dai\u00adly Plan\u00adet build\u00ading destroyed, trig\u00adger\u00ading his own mem\u00ado\u00adries of his past. Togeth\u00ader they seek out their fel\u00adlow Jus\u00adtice League<\/a> mem\u00adbers. Won\u00adder Woman and Aqua\u00adman are easy to locate, but before any more can be found, a cri\u00adsis aris\u00ades need\u00ading the pow\u00ader of the short-hand\u00aded team to con\u00adfront, a cri\u00adsis that four are ill-suit\u00aded to face.<\/p>\n But not six: Green Lantern and the Flash have inde\u00adpen\u00addent\u00adly dis\u00adcov\u00adered them\u00adselves, and come to aid of their fel\u00adlow Lea\u00adguers, sur\u00adpris\u00ading them. That leaves on the last mem\u00adber of the Jus\u00adtice League, the Mar\u00adt\u00adian Man\u00adhunter<\/a>: he\u2019s trapped in his own dream of life back on Mars, with a fam\u00adi\u00adly, but that dream is rude\u00adly shattered.<\/p>\n Togeth\u00ader, the ques\u00adtion is, what is going on? The whole prob\u00adlem seems like a dream turned night\u00admare, and, to the Jus\u00adtice League, only one per\u00adson could do such a thing: Doc\u00adtor Des\u00adtiny<\/a>, one of the Jus\u00adtice League\u2019s old\u00adest oppo\u00adnents, capa\u00adble of turn\u00ading dreams into real\u00adi\u00adty and vice ver\u00adsa<\/em>. But why would he let the sev\u00aden mem\u00adbers of the Jus\u00adtice League awak\u00aden from their dream, and why was he leav\u00ading hints about his where\u00adabouts in their minds?<\/p>\n When the Jus\u00adtice League final\u00adly locates Doc\u00adtor Des\u00adtiny, they dis\u00adcov\u00ader that the true author of this night\u00admare is Know-Man, a pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric man trans\u00adformed by a Con\u00adtroller into a being des\u00adtined to become a pow\u00ader\u00adful anti-war weapon. Over the cen\u00adturies and mil\u00adlen\u00adni\u00adum, Know-Man became con\u00advinced that a poten\u00adtial threat faced the entire world, one that only a plan\u00adet full of super-pow\u00adered beings could face and defeat. This, then was his solu\u00adtion: using Doc\u00adtor Des\u00adtiny\u2019s dream pow\u00aders to make Know-Man\u2019s dream a real\u00adi\u00adty. But a plan\u00adet where every\u00adone pos\u00adsessed super-pow\u00aders with\u00adout the train\u00ading or ethics to use them prop\u00ader\u00adly is a dream that soon turned into a nightmare.<\/p>\n And that night\u00admare reach\u00ades out to encom\u00adpass the Jus\u00adtice League, sev\u00ader\u00ading them from their con\u00adnec\u00adtions to the peo\u00adple around them. Each is trapped in their own night\u00admare of iso\u00adla\u00adtion, except for the Mar\u00adt\u00adian Man\u00adhunter, who was already iso\u00adlat\u00aded: Doc\u00adtor Des\u00adtiny, before he fades away like a dream upon awak\u00aden\u00ading, releas\u00ades the Man\u00adhunter, who uses his telepa\u00adthy and con\u00adnec\u00adtion to the oth\u00aders to free them. All togeth\u00ader again, they man\u00adage to restore the world to its nor\u00admal state. Know-Man leaves, being so pow\u00ader\u00adful that even the com\u00adbined might of the Jus\u00adtice League can\u00adnot stop him, inform\u00ading them that they just doomed their world and it would up to them to pro\u00adtect it when the time comes.<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> In a world where super\u00adheroes exist, it would be nat\u00adur\u00adal dream of many to have such pow\u00aders them\u00adselves. But hav\u00ading super\u00adpow\u00aders is not some\u00adthing to be tak\u00aden light\u00adly, espe\u00adcial\u00adly here, where peo\u00adple are grant\u00aded them almost ran\u00addom\u00adly. Most, it seems, suc\u00adcumb to their baser desires and use them for their own self-inter\u00adest, fight\u00ading and rob\u00adbing, instead of using them hero\u00adical\u00adly or even just casu\u00adal\u00adly. Very few, with only one or two excep\u00adtions not\u00aded, are will\u00ading to use them as true heroes.<\/p>\n That is because there is a com\u00admon theme among most heroes, in that they received or were led to obtain their pow\u00aders through some sac\u00adri\u00adfice or tri\u00adal that grounds them and grants them a sense of respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty in using them. In that, Know-Man was wrong in try\u00ading to grant super\u00adpow\u00aders to every\u00adone with\u00adout a cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading self-lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtion on their use, so in try\u00ading to save the world, he was doom\u00ading it to a peri\u00adod of chaos from which the most like\u00adly result would be a frag\u00adment\u00aded dic\u00adta\u00adtor\u00adship run by the most pow\u00ader\u00adful beings, where those who still had not devel\u00adoped super-pow\u00aders, or those with lim\u00adit\u00aded super-pow\u00aders, would be the slaves, unless Know-Man would step in as over\u00adall dic\u00adta\u00adtor of the world, some\u00adthing that would nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly fol\u00adlow from his present actions. Either result would, in effect, \u2018destroy the vil\u00adlage in order to save it.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n One more thing: one won\u00adders what Dream of the End\u00adless would be think\u00ading of peo\u00adple using the pow\u00ader of dreams to recre\u00adate real\u00adi\u00adty: isn\u2019t that one of things he is sup\u00adposed to con\u00adtrol? He is<\/em> a part of the DC super\u00adhero uni\u00adverse, as seen in anoth\u00ader JLA storyline.<\/p>\n His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> The sto\u00adry col\u00adlec\u00adtion was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly pub\u00adlished as a lim\u00adit\u00aded series as \u201cJus\u00adtice League \u2014 A Mid\u00adsum\u00admer\u2019s Night\u00admare\u201d<\/em> and was writ\u00adten by promi\u00adnent comics writ\u00aders Mark Waid and Fabi\u00adan Nicieza, with a fore\u00adword by Grant Morrison.<\/p>\n Note:<\/em> The glob\u00adal threat that would require a plan\u00adet-wide col\u00adlec\u00adtion of super\u00adheroes would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly be deter\u00admined an ancient dooms\u00adday machine named Maged\u00addon, a threat so vast that it took an army of super-pow\u00adered indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals to com\u00adbat it. Maged\u00addon was cre\u00adat\u00aded by writ\u00aders Grant Mor\u00adri\u00adson<\/a> and Howard Porter<\/a> in the World War III<\/a> sto\u00adry. The Jus\u00adtice League would use an adap\u00adta\u00adtion of the Ama\u00adzon\u00adian Pur\u00adple Ray, access\u00ading the bio\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal mor\u00adphogenic field that unites all life on the plan\u00adet to allow every human to expe\u00adri\u00adence a tem\u00adpo\u00adrary evo\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary advance, grant\u00adi\u00adng them super-pow\u00aders, there\u00adby cre\u00adat\u00ading the plan\u00adet full of super-pow\u00adered beings Know-Man want\u00aded to cre\u00adate himself.<\/p>\n Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded. This sto\u00adry is what the revamped Jus\u00adtice League is all about, dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading the abil\u00adi\u00adty to work togeth\u00ader as a team (even the noto\u00adri\u00adous\u00adly team-denial\u00adist Bat\u00adman) despite their var\u00adied per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties, lev\u00adel of expe\u00adri\u00adence and abil\u00adi\u00adties. Actu\u00adal\u00adly, it is a very well-struc\u00adtured team that cov\u00ader most of the wide range of super\u00adhero abil\u00adi\u00adties. There are four strong war\u00adrior heroes (Super\u00adman, Won\u00adder Woman, Aqua\u00adman and the Mar\u00adt\u00adian Man\u00adhunter), a skills-based, gad\u00adget hero (Bat\u00adman), ranged heroes (Super\u00adman, Bat\u00adman, Won\u00adder Woman, Mar\u00adt\u00adian Man\u00adhunter, Green Lantern), mar\u00adtial heroes (Bat\u00adman and Won\u00adder Woman), psy\u00adchic heroes (Mar\u00adt\u00adian Man\u00adhunter, Aqua\u00adman and Won\u00adder Woman), a speed\u00adster hero (Flash) and what I call wild-card heroes (Bat\u00adman, Green Lantern) that do things out\u00adside the nor\u00admal range of hero\u00adic abilities.<\/p>\n One of the most inter\u00adest\u00ading group dynam\u00adics is Flash and Green Lantern. Green Lantern (Kyle Raynor) is the rook\u00adie here, paired with the vet\u00ader\u00adan Flash (Wal\u00adly West) by age even though the Flash has been a hero for much of his teenaged life and all of his adult life. They seem to enjoy the dis\u00adparag\u00ading ban\u00adter between them in this book.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
