Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> A tale of mur\u00adder, black\u00admail and hyp\u00adno\u00adsis: a fiendish black\u00admail plot by Mori\u00adar\u00adty involves the sen\u00adsa\u00adtion\u00adal mur\u00adders of inno\u00adcent woman and promi\u00adnent men being black\u00admailed with being con\u00adnect\u00aded to the mur\u00adders, a state even they can\u00adnot dis\u00adprove, being entranced by a love\u00adly hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and ren\u00addered unaware of their actions at the time of the murders.<\/p>\n Sher\u00adlock Holmes becomes involved at the request of Inspec\u00adtor Greg\u00adson (Matthew Boul\u00adton<\/a>) because the police can\u00adnot find a com\u00admon motive or rea\u00adson for the killings.<\/p>\n Inspec\u00adtor Greg\u00adson: I put my pride in my pock\u00adet and went to see the man who\u2019d so often helped Inspec\u00adtor Lastrade and myself in the past \u2014 Sher\u00adlock Holmes!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n After view\u00ading the lat\u00adest vic\u00adtim, it is a chance meet\u00ading at the Pem\u00adbroke House, a very upper class social club, where Holmes and Greg\u00adson are dis\u00adcussing the case that will ulti\u00admate\u00adly give Holmes his first clue and gives the audi\u00adence the first look at the title char\u00adac\u00adter, the love\u00adly Lydia Mar\u00adlowe (Hillary Brooke<\/a>), as she enter\u00adtains her next vic\u00adtim, Sir George Fen\u00adwick (Paul Cavanagh<\/a>).<\/p>\n Inspec\u00adtor Greg\u00adson: What are you look\u00ading at, Mr. Holmes? Greg\u00adson: Is that his daugh\u00adter with him? Holmes: Won\u00adder where she\u2019s tak\u00ading Sir George Fenwick? The scene fol\u00adlows Lydia and Sir George as they return to her apart\u00adment. With soft music in the back\u00adground and a drugged drink, Lydia directs Sir George\u2019s atten\u00adtion to the pool of water before him. Before long, the swirling water and her soft words have her unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate vic\u00adtim entranced, although the lat\u00adter part of the induc\u00adtion is off-cam\u00adera: when Sir George awak\u00adens, it is in a cheap hotel room with the news ven\u00addor below cry\u00ading that anoth\u00ader \u201cfin\u00adger mur\u00adder\u201d has tak\u00aden place. To his hor\u00adror, he dis\u00adcov\u00aders the tell\u00adtale sev\u00adered fin\u00adger in his pock\u00adet. Upon return\u00ading to Lydia, she explains that he left short\u00adly after he arrived and she has no idea what he did since.<\/p>\n After that comes the black\u00admail, the threat of such ter\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading pro\u00adpor\u00adtions that, even if untrue, would black\u00aden the fam\u00adi\u00adly name and hon\u00ador. How\u00adev\u00ader, Sir George appar\u00adent\u00adly takes the hon\u00ador\u00adable way out, sui\u00adcide, but the black\u00admail\u00aders dis\u00adcov\u00adered he was plan\u00adning on inform\u00ading the police and mur\u00addered him, mak\u00ading it appear a sui\u00adcide. But Sir George, in his dying moment, grasps the one thing that would direct Sher\u00adlock Holmes toward his killers: a book of match\u00ades from the Pem\u00adbroke House where he saw Sher\u00adlock Holmes that fate\u00adful night, know\u00ading that Holmes saw him with Lydia.<\/p>\n But Sher\u00adlock Holmes is get\u00adting too close: Mori\u00adar\u00adty arranges for an assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion, meet\u00ading Holmes at his dwelling, set\u00adting him up for a sniper across the street. This sniper was a vic\u00adtim of the allur\u00ading Lydia and was to com\u00admit the the crime under her trance, but when the assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion was foiled, he was killed to pre\u00advent him from talking.<\/p>\n Hav\u00ading seen the sniper and his reac\u00adtions, Sher\u00adlock deduces that he was hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, and things are start\u00ading to fall in place for him. He attends a gath\u00ader\u00ading at the Mes\u00admer Club, where all the hyp\u00adno\u00adtists of Lon\u00addon gath\u00ader. While the doubt\u00ading Wat\u00adson (Nigel Bruce<\/a>) is embar\u00adrassed to dis\u00adcov\u00ader he was hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, Holmes is watch\u00ading the audi\u00adence to locate Lydia, who was sent to the Mes\u00admer Club by Mori\u00adar\u00adty in order to induce Holmes to return to her apartment.<\/p>\n Lydia invites Holmes to her apart\u00adment. Mori\u00adar\u00adty direct\u00aded her so, telling her \u201cHolmes has one weak\u00adness, his insa\u00adtiable curios\u00adi\u00adty. If you can rouse that, you can lead him any\u00adwhere.\u201d and she uses that to per\u00adsuade him to allow her to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize him. She remarks that he would be a dif\u00adfi\u00adcult sub\u00adject, admin\u00adis\u00adter\u00ading a nar\u00adcot\u00adic to ease the process, then she directs his atten\u00adtion to the pool of water before him. As she starts it swirling and begins her induc\u00adtion, Sher\u00adlock starts nod\u00adding away.<\/p>\n When Holmes is hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, Mori\u00adar\u00adty appears, hav\u00ading Sher\u00adlock test\u00aded to ensure he was entranced, then orders him to write a sui\u00adcide note. Then, as Sher\u00adlock is being instruct\u00aded to walk on the wall of the bal\u00adcony, Wat\u00adson and Greg\u00adson and the police barge in to res\u00adcue Holmes. But Sher\u00adlock does not need res\u00adcu\u00ading: he was\u00adn\u2019t hyp\u00adno\u00adtized. The test with the knife was passed because Sher\u00adlock switched the drug with an anes\u00adthet\u00adic when Lydi\u00ada\u2019s back was turned. As he is placed in hand\u00adcuffs, Mori\u00adar\u00adty breaks away, leap\u00ading over the bal\u00adcony, but his attempt to grab the wall across the way fails, caus\u00ading him to fall to his death below. And, at that, with his death and his gang in cus\u00adtody. the threat of the \u201cfin\u00adger mur\u00adders\u201d is brought to an end.<\/p>\n\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> The hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in this movie takes place in three scenes and is of vary\u00ading accu\u00adra\u00adcy and real\u00adism. It is also prob\u00ada\u00adbly nec\u00ades\u00adsary, as one might con\u00adsid\u00ader sim\u00adply drug\u00adging the vic\u00adtims into uncon\u00adscious\u00adness would serve the same pur\u00adpose, but there are advan\u00adtages to hyp\u00adno\u00adsis that sim\u00adply drug\u00adging the vic\u00adtim would not accomplish.<\/p>\n The first scene is where Lydia hyp\u00adno\u00adtizes Sir George. The full induc\u00adtion is not shown, nor what was sug\u00adgest\u00aded to him, but the result, basi\u00adcal\u00adly amne\u00adsia com\u00adbined prob\u00ada\u00adbly with sug\u00adges\u00adtions to go to a cer\u00adtain loca\u00adtion, get a room and fall asleep. This way, there are wit\u00adness\u00ades who can tes\u00adti\u00adfy truth\u00adful\u00adly that Sir George left and took a cab to the area of the of the mur\u00adder. The hyp\u00adno\u00adsis involved may not be enough to force Sir George (or any one else) to per\u00adform all of these things, but the addi\u00adtion of the drug could be enough to make it pos\u00adsi\u00adble. This scene I would have to rate as mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adly possible.<\/p>\n The sec\u00adond scene is at the Mes\u00admer Club. As Holmes and Wat\u00adson enter, a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is just fin\u00adish\u00ading. In typ\u00adi\u00adcal doltish fash\u00adion, Wat\u00adson den\u00adi\u00adgrates and denies hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and is thus made the tar\u00adget of anoth\u00ader demon\u00adstra\u00adtion with the dual pur\u00adpose of embar\u00adrass\u00ading and enlight\u00aden\u00ading him. This scene I rate as authentic.<\/p>\n The third scene appears<\/em> to involve hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, and that\u2019s the final scene with Lydia and Sher\u00adlock. This is where Lydia is sup\u00adposed to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize Sher\u00adlock so that Mori\u00adar\u00adty can have him com\u00admit sui\u00adcide. Even with the addi\u00adtion of the cannabis<\/em> drug, it is unlike\u00adly that the plot would pos\u00adsi\u00adbly hap\u00adpen, and if it were to hap\u00adpen, the whole process would fall over into mind con\u00adtrol rather than hyp\u00adno\u00adsis. The expec\u00adta\u00adtion here is hard\u00adly authen\u00adtic but Holmes\u2019 resis\u00adtance to it is authentic.<\/p>\n His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> Based very loose\u00adly on the Doyle sto\u00adry \u2018The Adven\u00adture of the Emp\u00adty House<\/em>\u2019. <\/em>\u201cThe Woman in Green\u201d<\/em> is one of the last of the series of Basil Rath\u00adbone \/ Nigel Bruce adap\u00adta\u00adtions. The only part of the movie that is direct\u00adly from canon is the assas\u00adsi\u00adna\u00adtion scene, the rest was the cre\u00adation of screen\u00adwriter Bertram Mill\u00adhauser<\/a>, the screen\u00adwriter for oth\u00ader films in this series includ\u00ading \u201cThe Spi\u00adder Woman\u201d<\/em> and \u201cSher\u00adlock Holmes Faces Death\u201d<\/em> (one of the two oth\u00ader films of this series that Hillary Brooke appears in.)<\/p>\n\n Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded but not very high\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded. Hen\u00adry Daniell<\/a> plays a very good Mori\u00adar\u00adty (Rath\u00adbone called his per\u00adfor\u00admance \u201cdelec\u00adtably dan\u00adger\u00adous\u201d and said that Daniell was his favorite of the three actors who played Mori\u00adar\u00adty oppo\u00adsite him) with an icy, no-non\u00adsense direct\u00adness that you should expect from a mas\u00adter crim\u00adi\u00adnal. Their inter\u00adplay is one of the best scenes in the movie:<\/p>\n Mori\u00adar\u00adty: We\u2019ve had many encoun\u00adters in the past. You hope to place me on the gal\u00adlows. I tell you I shall nev\u00ader stand upon the gal\u00adlows. But, if you are instru\u00admen\u00adtal in any way in bring\u00ading about my destruc\u00adtion, you will not be alive to enjoy your satisfaction. Hillary Brooke plays a very love\u00adly but sin\u00adis\u00adter hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, always cool and in con\u00adtrol, and the full induc\u00adtion on Holmes she uses is excel\u00adlent\u00adly done. Their sin\u00adis\u00adter assis\u00adtants in crime, espe\u00adcial\u00adly the dement\u00aded doc\u00adtor with a pas\u00adsion for \u201cdol\u00adlies\u201d who actu\u00adal\u00adly per\u00adforms the fin\u00adger exci\u00adsion, are creepy.<\/p>\n How\u00adev\u00ader, the mys\u00adtery and the motive behind it is con\u00adtrived and real\u00adly does\u00adn\u2019t seem that threat\u00aden\u00ading enough to engen\u00adder the black\u00admail scheme Mori\u00adar\u00adty is plot\u00adting. The fact that this series was trans\u00adlat\u00aded into (then) present times does\u00adn\u2019t help: Sher\u00adlock Holmes is a Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan indi\u00advid\u00adual and needs to remain there. It also unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly suf\u00adfers by mak\u00ading Wat\u00adson into a buf\u00adfoon instead of the val\u00adued part\u00adner he was in the sto\u00adries.
