No, not the movie \u201cLook\u00ader\u201d<\/em><\/a> but some\u00adone obvi\u00adous\u00adly based on it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m talk\u00ading about the DC Comics char\u00adac\u00adter Look\u00ader<\/a>, and she was quite appro\u00adpri\u00adate\u00adly named.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> Look\u00ader was born Emi\u00adly Brig\u00adgs, a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly plain woman who enjoyed a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly plain life and was mar\u00adried to an equal\u00adly plain husband.<\/p>\n

Until, that is, an under\u00adground (lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly) soci\u00adety named Abyssia kid\u00adnapped her to use in their plot to destroy the sur\u00adface world. By their advanced sci\u00adence, and tak\u00ading advan\u00adtage of her Abyssian roy\u00adal ances\u00adtry, she was rad\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly trans\u00adformed into a beau\u00adti\u00adful woman with tele\u00adpath\u00adic and tele\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic pow\u00aders, which were to be used to draw Hal\u00adley\u2019s Comet into a col\u00adli\u00adsion with the Earth. Only by break\u00ading the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic con\u00adtrol placed on her con\u00adscious\u00adness by the var\u00adi\u00adous fac\u00adtions of Abyssians was she able to reverse the path of the comet and save the Earth, aid\u00aded by The Out\u00adsiders<\/a>, a super\u00adhero group once orga\u00adnized and led by Bat\u00adman<\/a> but who would leave in the issue after she gets her pow\u00aders, mak\u00ading the team inde\u00adpen\u00addent and under the lead\u00ader\u00adship of Geo-Force.<\/p>\n

Now pos\u00adsess\u00ading super pow\u00aders, not to men\u00adtion a super appear\u00adance, Look\u00ader took the name first Lia to divorce her\u00adself from her past. (When a rival telepath showed Look\u00ader the image of her past self, Look\u00ader orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly was over\u00adwhelmed by the sight, but on the next con\u00adfrona\u00adtion she is able to defeat her rival, say\u00ading \u201cYou made a mis\u00adtake in our last meet\u00ading, Prav\u00adda \u2026 you remind\u00aded me of who I was: I hate<\/strong> what I was \u2026 and any\u00adone who reminds me of her!\u201d) She would start a career as a super\u00admod\u00adel but begin to lose her hus\u00adband in the process. She would also to join The Out\u00adsiders, res\u00adcu\u00ading them when they were cap\u00adtures of the Mas\u00adters of Dis\u00adas\u00adter under the pay of the Bad Samaritan.<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, it did\u00adn\u2019t last. Look\u00ader would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly lose her pow\u00aders and return to being plain Emi\u00adly, but when Abyssia was under attack she was able to return to aid them and recov\u00ader her pow\u00aders again.<\/p>\n

Look\u00ader and her pow\u00aders rad\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly changed when Abyssia was over\u00adrun by vam\u00adpires (a land that nev\u00ader sees the sun would have looked like heav\u00aden to them) and she her\u00adself was trans\u00adformed into a vam\u00adpire by their leader, Rod\u00ader\u00adick, except that her super\u00adpow\u00aders allowed her to resist being in his thrall. Although her tele\u00adpath\u00adic and hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders were increased as a result, as well as gain\u00ading oth\u00ader vam\u00adpir\u00adic abil\u00adi\u00adties, her super\u00adhu\u00adman nature allows her to avoid many of the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal vam\u00adpir\u00adic weaknesses.<\/p>\n

With the even\u00adtu\u00adal breakup of the Out\u00adsiders, Look\u00ader dis\u00adap\u00adpeared from comics, appar\u00adent\u00adly resum\u00ading her mod\u00adel\u00adling career (and, on the side, being a vam\u00adpire hunter), final\u00adly to reap\u00adpear dur\u00ading a sto\u00adry set in Markovia, the king\u00addom ruled by Geo-Force. She also recent\u00adly rejoined the Out\u00adsiders, now a covert super\u00adhero group under the direc\u00adtion of Red Robin<\/a> and a secret part of Bat\u00adman Incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded<\/a><\/i>, re-join\u00ading Meta\u00admor\u00adpho, Halo and Katana from the orig\u00adi\u00adnal team.<\/p>\n

Pow\u00aders:<\/em> In her orig\u00adi\u00adnal form, Look\u00ader had excep\u00adtion\u00adal tele\u00adpath\u00adic and tele\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic pow\u00aders, all of which have a phys\u00adi\u00adcal man\u00adi\u00adfes\u00adta\u00adtion in glow\u00ading blue eyes. (Which is the tie back to the movie \u201cLook\u00ader\u201d<\/em>, where the tele\u00advised hyp\u00adnot\u00adic induc\u00adtion had blue pat\u00adterns imposed on the eyes of the peo\u00adple on the screen.) She eas\u00adi\u00adly com\u00admand\u00aded oppo\u00adnents to fall in love with her and fight each oth\u00ader for her affec\u00adtion, or she could erase their memories.<\/p>\n

In her vam\u00adpir\u00adic form, her hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders increased, as well as gain\u00ading the pow\u00ader to sum\u00admon ver\u00admin and to trans\u00adform into a mist form. She does not have to fear sun\u00adlight and does not have the irre\u00adsistible urge to drink blood, although she does require blood to sur\u00advive, and she can trans\u00adform oth\u00aders into vam\u00adpires, although when she does, she also for\u00adbids them from prey\u00ading on humans.<\/p>\n

In either form, per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly, Look\u00ader was quite the oppo\u00adsite of her plain and mousy for\u00admer self. Flam\u00adboy\u00adant, sen\u00adsu\u00adal, out\u00adgo\u00ading, Look\u00ader is on the ride of her life and enjoy\u00ading every minute of it. (Well, except for her abortive romance with Geo-Force and her trou\u00adbled rela\u00adtion\u00adship with her (even\u00adtu\u00adal) ex-husband.)<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Look\u00ader is one of the few psion\u00adic hero\u00adic char\u00adac\u00adters who actu\u00adal\u00adly seems to enjoy using her tele\u00adpath\u00adic hyp\u00adno\u00adsis on her oppo\u00adnents. While char\u00adac\u00adters like Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor X of the X\u2011Men seem to fret about the ethics of using their pow\u00aders and use them spar\u00ading\u00adly (and will even seem apolo\u00adgetic after\u00adward) or char\u00adac\u00adters like Sat\u00adurn Girl of the Legion of Super Heroes see their pow\u00aders as just anoth\u00ader tool in the fight against super vil\u00adlains, Look\u00ader seems to rev\u00adel in them, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in using them to manip\u00adu\u00adlate her oppo\u00adnents. (And not just using her tele\u00adpath\u00adic hyp\u00adno\u00adsis: in at least one sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, she used her telekine\u00adsis to turn two gun\u00admen who about to shoot an inno\u00adcent tar\u00adget into shoot\u00ading each oth\u00ader, and looked angry at them when she did it.) And since her pow\u00aders were cenetered on her eyes, she also enjoys telling peo\u00adple to look at her and look into her eyes.<\/p>\n

The orig\u00adi\u00adnal cos\u00adtume is also worth men\u00adtion\u00ading: not many super\u00adhero cos\u00adtumes are asym\u00admet\u00adric like hers, where the right arm and the left leg are left bare and the mis-matched boots, although the cape fas\u00adtened over one shoul\u00adder is rem\u00adi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the (DC) Cap\u00adtain Mar\u00advel. The pink bow at the hem of the left leg is a nice touch, though.<\/p>\n

One more curi\u00adous fact: Look\u00ader is about the only hero who flies (well, lev\u00adi\u00adtates her\u00adself very fast) stand\u00ading up.<\/p>\n
