In a sum\u00admer where comics-based movies are com\u00ading out almost every cou\u00adple of weeks, its takes a lot to stand out. But could a movie build\u00ading on the rep\u00adu\u00adta\u00adtion of a movie series, act\u00ading as a pre\u00adquel to them, com\u00adpete with the rest of the comics movies?<\/p>\n

Yes, I believe it does.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cX\u2011Men: First Class\u201d<\/em> is the sto\u00adry about Charles Xavier and Eric Lehn\u00adsh\u00aderr, mutants, who would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly become staunch rivals. But here, they\u2019re allies against anoth\u00ader mutant, Sebas\u00adt\u00adian Shaw, who has a pre\u00advi\u00adous con\u00adnec\u00adtion with Eric. Its also about the found\u00ading of the X\u2011Men and the cause of the rival\u00adry between Charles and Eric. Its why Charles is wheel-chair bound and where Eric got the trade\u00admark met\u00adal hel\u00admet. Its about the first steps toward col\u00adlect\u00ading mutants and train\u00ading them for the even\u00adtu\u00adal bat\u00adtle between two philoso\u00adphies: one where humans and mutants can co-exist, one where one must dom\u00adi\u00adnate the other.<\/p>\n

And some\u00adwhere in there, there\u2019s the Cuban Mis\u00adsile Crisis.<\/p>\n

Eric\u2019s life was filled with pain. Sebas\u00adt\u00adian Shaw, as the head of the Hell\u00adfire Club, is using his pow\u00ader and influ\u00adence to start World War III, an atom\u00adic war that would dev\u00adas\u00adtate the Earth and engen\u00adder more mutants (\u201cChil\u00addren of the Atom\u201d) to be his army. Shaw, as a doc\u00adtor in the prison camp that held Eric as a child, sought to unleash Eric\u2019s mag\u00adnet\u00adic pow\u00aders and killed his moth\u00ader as a way to unlock his pow\u00aders through rage. As an adult, Eric was on a quest for vengeance.<\/p>\n

Charles\u2019 life, on the oth\u00ader hand, was filled with accom\u00adplish\u00adments, even if his pick-up tech\u00adnique left some\u00adthing to be desired. He is approached by CIA agent Moira McTag\u00adgart who knows that mutants exist and that they\u2019re not on the side of the US. With her con\u00adnec\u00adtions he is able to locate oth\u00ader mutants and form the basis of what would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly become the X\u2011Men, but that\u2019s not quite yet.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> With two telepaths (Charles and Emma Frost, who was aid\u00ading Shaw) in the movie, there def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly was sev\u00ader\u00adal times when they used their telepa\u00adthy, and tele\u00adpath\u00adic mind con\u00adtrol one or more of those times, and both do so. Emma uses her telepa\u00adthy to con\u00advince a Russ\u00adian gen\u00ader\u00adal he\u2019s enjoy\u00ading a romp with illu\u00adsion\u00adary self, and Charles uses his telepa\u00adthy to change a few minds and to cause amne\u00adsia, so its hard to see who is the more manipulative.<\/p>\n

Adden\u00adda:<\/em> I have to give the direc\u00adtor cred\u00adit for the unan\u00adnounced cameo appears by Hugh Jack\u00adman, who Xavier and Lehn\u00adsh\u00aderr try to recruit and he tells them to get lost. (Actu\u00adal\u00adly he says some\u00adthing a lit\u00adtle more coarse.) And it has one of my all time favorite actors, Michael Iron\u00adside, as the com\u00adman\u00adder of the US inter\u00addic\u00adtion fleet. How\u00adev\u00ader, there was\u00adn\u2019t the req\u00adui\u00adsite cameo appear\u00adance of Stan Lee, nor was there any\u00adthing shown after the final cred\u00adits. (The final scene with Eric would have worked nice\u00adly for that.)<\/p>\n

The set design also deserves cred\u00adit: the movie, espe\u00adcial\u00adly Shaw\u2019s sub\u00adma\u00adrine, looks like it came from an ear\u00adly Bond film. In fact, I could eas\u00adi\u00adly imag\u00adine Goldfin\u00adger or Blofeld sit\u00adting in the con\u00adtrol room instead of Shaw.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Yes, def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded. The rela\u00adtion\u00adship between Charles and Eric is what shapes the sto\u00adry and we get to see enough of their pasts to make their friend\u00adship and their rival\u00adry all the more believ\u00adable: excel\u00adlent per\u00adfor\u00admances by both actors here. Mys\u00adtique and Beast also get some good char\u00adac\u00adter devel\u00adop\u00adment and their rela\u00adtion\u00adship is an inter\u00adest\u00ading coun\u00adter\u00adpoint to that of Charles and Eric. Plus Emma is not just eye can\u00addy here. Even some of new\u00ader mem\u00adbers of the two teams, like Angel, Ban\u00adshee and Havok, get their chance to con\u00adtribute to the fun. Cur\u00adrent\u00adly it is get\u00adting very good reviews at places like IMDb<\/a> and Rot\u00adten Toma\u00adtoes<\/a> so it is like\u00adly to stay around a while.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
