I have quite an inter\u00adest in the Tarot, large\u00adly from a sym\u00adbol\u00adic and pos\u00adsi\u00adbly even a Jun\u00adgian per\u00adspec\u00adtive and cer\u00adtain\u00adly from an artis\u00adtic stand\u00adpoint. As an art col\u00adlec\u00adtor, I have sev\u00ader\u00adal pieces of art that are based on the Tarot, includ\u00ading \u201cThe Star\u201d<\/em> by Frank Kel\u00adly Freas 1<\/sup> that is one of the \u201cstars\u201d of my entire collection.<\/p>\n

I also know that it is com\u00admon for Tarot enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts to cre\u00adate their own Tarot deck: doing so not only per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adizes it, it deep\u00adens the con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the Tarot sym\u00adbol\u00ado\u00adgy and imagery for the indi\u00advid\u00adual. There\u00adfore, its only nat\u00adur\u00adal to com\u00adbine this inter\u00adest with my inter\u00adest in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis to want to cre\u00adate the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot deck. Of course, one caveat<\/em>: every\u00adthing sur\u00adround\u00ading the Tarot is open (and quite fer\u00advent\u00adly) to dis\u00adcus\u00adsion and argu\u00adment, from the his\u00adto\u00adry of the Tarot to the indi\u00advid\u00adual mean\u00adings of each sym\u00adbol. What fol\u00adlows is my own inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion which has about as much (or as lit\u00adtle) valid\u00adi\u00adty as any one else\u2019s.<\/p>\n

This first part will dis\u00adcuss the basic ele\u00adments of the Tarot, the suits and their accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading sym\u00adbols. The Suits order the Minor Arcana, the 52 cards that even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly became the play\u00ading cards in use today. The Suits and their sym\u00adbols also appear reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly in the Major Arcana. Sub\u00adse\u00adquent parts will cov\u00ader the Major Arcana and the indi\u00advid\u00adual Suits of the Minor Arcana.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Traditional Suits<\/h1>\n

There are four suits in the Minor Arcana of the Tarot: tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly they are Wands, Swords, Cups and Discs. Each cor\u00adre\u00adsponds to one of the four Ele\u00adments of West\u00adern occult tra\u00addi\u00adtion, Fire, Air, Water and Earth, respec\u00adtive\u00adly, which in turn cor\u00adre\u00adspond to one of the four ele\u00admen\u00adtal states of mat\u00adter, plas\u00adma, gas, liq\u00aduid and sol\u00adid, and each cor\u00adre\u00adsponds to a men\u00adtal state of being, pas\u00adsion, intel\u00adlect, com\u00adpas\u00adsion and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, each will cor\u00adre\u00adspond to a stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal hyp\u00adnot\u00adic induc\u00adtion device.<\/p>\n

(The sym\u00adbols, by the way, beside each Suit name are the alchem\u00adi\u00adcal sym\u00adbols for each Ele\u00adment. They may not appear as such in some browsers.)<\/p>\n

Wands \u00f0\u0178\u0153\u201a<\/h2>\n

Wands are the ele\u00adment of Fire: the Wand is the match that sparks the fire of pas\u00adsion that is the most excitable mys\u00adti\u00adcal ele\u00adment and state of mat\u00adter. For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, the most obvi\u00adous and com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adble image would be a lit can\u00addle but it can be expand\u00aded to include the com\u00adfort\u00ading glow of a fire on a dark night and the mes\u00admer\u00adiz\u00ading spec\u00adta\u00adcle of a rag\u00ading fire. Fire is the pri\u00admal hyp\u00adnot\u00adic induc\u00adtion focus: the flick\u00ader\u00ading, tran\u00adsient pat\u00adtern of the flame\u2019s unpre\u00addictable dance demands a sub\u00adjec\u00adt\u2019s attention<\/p>\n

Swords \u00f0\u0178\u0153\u0081<\/h2>\n

Swords are the ele\u00adment of Air: the Sword is the instru\u00adment of Air and the intel\u00adlect that cuts away ideas to reveal the truth. For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, the cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading stereo\u00adtype is the swing\u00ading pen\u00addant or metronome. Now a swing\u00ading pen\u00addant can be a crys\u00adtal but the stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal swing\u00ading object is a watch (his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, it was actu\u00adal\u00adly a watch fob) or coin (in ani\u00adme and man\u00adga). Plus, the tick\u00ading of the metronome is part of its induc\u00adtion func\u00adtion, and sound is car\u00adried through the air, so it is more significant.<\/p>\n

(To tell the truth, it was hard deter\u00admin\u00ading what stereo\u00adtype to use here: there real\u00adly aren\u2019t that many phys\u00adi\u00adcal hyp\u00adnot\u00adic stereo\u00adtypes and the oth\u00ader suits were using the most preva\u00adlent ones. I thought of mir\u00adrors, only because of the shiny sur\u00adface of the steel sword, but some\u00adhow it did\u00adn\u2019t seem quite accu\u00adrate. I was con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading things like mechan\u00adi\u00adcal objects or weapons like the hyp\u00adno-gun but they did\u00adn\u2019t seem to cov\u00ader the ele\u00adment very well. How\u00adev\u00ader, upon con\u00adsult\u00ading a friend, she rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded pen\u00addants or metronomes. Now I had been con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading swing\u00ading or dan\u00adgling crys\u00adtals for water (below) but they don\u2019t have to be swing\u00ading or dan\u00adgling to have a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic effect. Plus, pen\u00addants or metronomes swing through Air to have their effect, so they are appropriate.)<\/p>\n

Cups \u00f0\u0178\u0153\u201e<\/h2>\n

Cups are the ele\u00adment of Water: the Cup is the recep\u00adta\u00adcle of Water of com\u00adpas\u00adsion that com\u00adforts and soothes. For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, the nat\u00adur\u00adal cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading hyp\u00adnot\u00adic stereo\u00adtype would be the swing\u00ading crys\u00adtal. Nom\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly clear as water, yet col\u00ador\u00adful: just as water reflects and refracts light to pro\u00adduce fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading rain\u00adbows of col\u00ador, so, too, does the crys\u00adtal, fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading the sub\u00adject as they sur\u00adren\u00adder to trance. Mir\u00adrors, too, would work here, reflect\u00ading the pat\u00adtern of still water.<\/p>\n

Discs \u00f0\u0178\u0153\u0192<\/h2>\n

Discs are the ele\u00adment of Earth: the Disk (or Coin, as it is some\u00adtimes known) is the sym\u00adbol of Earth and wealth and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of sol\u00adid mat\u00adter. For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, the most obvi\u00adous image would be the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic spi\u00adral disk, whether it be the eye-catch\u00ading man\u00addalas of Asian reli\u00adgions, the quar\u00adter-sized hyp\u00adno-disks that were adver\u00adtised in the back of com\u00adic books and men\u2019s mag\u00ada\u00adzines or the large pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal sized motor\u00adized hyp\u00adno-disks. Visu\u00adal\u00adly, spi\u00adrals the most preva\u00adlent form of a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic stereo\u00adtype, and as such is used count\u00adless times in media, espe\u00adcial\u00adly advertisements.<\/p>\n

Two Additional Suits<\/h1>\n

The four tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal Suits com\u00adprise the four states of mat\u00adter, yet that leaves the states of ener\u00adgy untouched. Because of my desire for com\u00adplete\u00adness, I would include Light (the pres\u00adence of ener\u00adgy) and Dark (the absence of ener\u00adgy) as the two Suits of Ener\u00adgy to com\u00adpli\u00adment the four Suits of Matter<\/p>\n

Light \u00e2\u0161\u203a<\/span><\/h2>\n

Light stands for any and all types of ener\u00adgy, not just the lim\u00adit\u00aded spec\u00adtrum of fre\u00adquen\u00adcies vis\u00adi\u00adble to the eye, but every oth\u00ader forms of elec\u00adtro\u00admag\u00adnet\u00adic radi\u00ada\u00adtion. And, giv\u00aden some form of the Grand Uni\u00adfied The\u00ado\u00adry, it can be expand\u00aded to include oth\u00ader non-mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal forms of the Uni\u00adverse such as mag\u00adnet\u00adism and grav\u00adi\u00adty. The sym\u00adbol for Light is the atom\u00adic sym\u00adbol, three elec\u00adtrons orbit\u00ading the nucleus.<\/p>\n

Dark \u00e2\u0161\u00ab<\/h2>\n

Dark stands for the absence of ener\u00adgy, either the pri\u00admal state before the Big Bang or just the dark\u00adness of a closed room. As physics now tells us that the Uni\u00adverse is full of ener\u00adgy, it is used here pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly for the visu\u00adal image. The sym\u00adbol for Dark is the black cir\u00adcle: black for the dark\u00adness that is the absence of ener\u00adgy and the cir\u00adcle for the most pri\u00admal and sim\u00adplest of two-dimen\u00adsion\u00adal shapes.<\/p>\n

For the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot, instead of assign\u00ading each to a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar hyp\u00adnot\u00adic stereo\u00adtype, I believe it best to com\u00adbine the two into a spi\u00adral, light and dark com\u00adbined, swirling to the cen\u00adter where both merge togeth\u00ader. As such, it does seem to con\u00adflict with the image of the Disk, but here is the sym\u00adbol\u00ado\u00adgy of the spi\u00adral image, where\u00adas the Disk the sym\u00adbol\u00ado\u00adgy is the mechan\u00adi\u00adcal or artis\u00adtic rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion or dis\u00adplay of the spi\u00adral image that is the stereotype.<\/p>\n

Whether I include these two addi\u00adtion\u00adal Suits in the Hyp\u00adnot\u00adic Tarot would depend on the amount of research and imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion I want to invest into the cre\u00adation of the var\u00adi\u00adous cards of the Minor Arcana. Since I am blog\u00adging about each Suit indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly, I won\u2019t have to make that deci\u00adsion any time soon.<\/p>\n

Putting them All Together<\/h1>\n

There\u00adfore, the ulti\u00admate hyp\u00adnot\u00adic focus would be a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of all four ele\u00adments: a spi\u00adral pen\u00addant hang\u00ading on a chain, set with a crys\u00adtal that holds a flick\u00ader\u00ading flame, set on to a black&white spi\u00adral pat\u00adtern. That would also be the sym\u00adbol for the back of each card.<\/p>\n
