Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> In \u2018No Award\u2019<\/em> by  Roger Zelazny<\/a>, we see the first-per\u00adson stum\u00adblings of a man caught in a dilem\u00adma, being present as a Pres\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial address with lit\u00adtle mem\u00ado\u00adry of how or why he was there. His mem\u00ado\u00adry and thoughts are frag\u00adment\u00aded, but dis\u00adturb\u00ading flash\u00ades keep dis\u00adtract\u00ading him. And then, when he sees his hand pro\u00adduce a gun, he is imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly at war with him\u00adself, allow\u00ading the Secret Ser\u00advice the time to stop him.<\/p>\n

What had hap\u00adpened, the man is told, is that a group intend\u00ading to assas\u00adsi\u00adnate the Pres\u00adi\u00addent used a num\u00adber of sur\u00adgi\u00adcal and psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal tech\u00adniques to sep\u00ada\u00adrate his brain into two dis\u00adtinct per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties, one con\u00adscious that was the ordi\u00adnary mind and one kept in a deep trance state until the prop\u00ader moment and the prop\u00ader trig\u00adger. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, that process could not be reversed, leav\u00ading the man with only half of a mind, unable to com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate with the oth\u00ader half except through the most crude of ways.<\/p>\n

Bet\u00adty White of The Evening Post<\/em> sud\u00adden\u00adly solicit\u00aded a 3,500 word sto\u00adry from me one day, so I did this one quick\u00adly and she bought it just as quick\u00adly. Then I asked her why she had want\u00aded it. She told me that she recent\u00adly had her tele\u00advi\u00adsion set on and was occu\u00adpied with some\u00adthing which did not per\u00admit her to change chan\u00adnels read\u00adi\u00adly. A show named \u201cStar Trek\u201d<\/em> came on and whe watched it through and enjoyed it. She had not known much about sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion, she said, and she resolved to stop by her paper\u00adback book store the fol\u00adlow\u00ading day, buy a sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion book at ran\u00addom and read it. It hap\u00adpened to be one of mine. She read it and liked it and decid\u00aded to ask me for a story.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
