The fol\u00adlow\u00ading has noth\u00ading to do with the over\u00adall sub\u00adject of the blog yet every\u00adthing to do with the con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal main\u00adte\u00adnance of the own\u00ader of the blog.<\/p>\n

The past two week\u00adends were occu\u00adpied with either attend\u00ading and\/or work\u00ading two wide\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent yet strange\u00adly sim\u00adi\u00adlar con\u00adven\u00adtions. (And thanks to the Word\u00adPress sched\u00adul\u00ading sys\u00adtem, I was able to com\u00adplete my posts ahead of time yet pub\u00adlish them on a reg\u00adu\u00adlar sched\u00adule.) As some\u00adone who used to attend maybe 6\u20138 con\u00adven\u00adtions a year when I could afford them, get\u00adting to more than two that aren\u2019t local is more than a lit\u00adtle depress\u00ading. Still, it was good to get out to them, if only to remind myself to have a good time.<\/p>\n

CONvergence<\/h1>\n

CON\u00adver\u00adgence<\/a> is a region\u00adal-sized SF con\u00adven\u00adtion in Min\u00adneapo\u00adlis: I have now attend\u00aded three, one a cou\u00adple of years ago when it fea\u00adtured authors Mer\u00adcedes Lack\u00adey<\/a> (who I know as Misty Lack\u00adey from read\u00ading her fan writ\u00ading before she went pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal) and her hus\u00adband Lar\u00adry Dixon, both of whom rarely do con\u00adven\u00adtions because of their busy sched\u00adules and involve\u00adment with out\u00adside respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties, then the last two because of invi\u00adta\u00adtions from a very good local friend who let me stay at her place instead of need\u00ading a hotel room.<\/p>\n

This year I went with the pur\u00adpose of hav\u00ading fun, and fun I did, both at the con\u00adven\u00adtion and with my friends out\u00adside of the con\u00adven\u00adtion. Because I love to do pan\u00adels, and despite the late\u00adness of my request, I was actu\u00adal\u00adly able to even be on two pan\u00adels, one on the Legion of Super Heroes and one on Bond gad\u00adgets, and the oth\u00ader pan\u00adels I attend\u00aded it seemed as it I should have been on them, any\u00adway, giv\u00aden how much I con\u00adtributed to them.<\/p>\n

What I find inter\u00adest\u00ading is the very vibrant fan com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty in the Min\u00adneapo\u00adlis \/ St Paul Twin Cities area, to the point it can sup\u00adport at least two SF con\u00adven\u00adtions, an ani\u00adme con\u00adven\u00adtion and a gam\u00ading con\u00adven\u00adtion, as well as a num\u00adber of reg\u00adu\u00adlar fan com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty activ\u00adi\u00adties. Its a com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty I could like being a part of.<\/p>\n

IkasuCon<\/h1>\n

Ika\u00adsu\u00adCon is a local ani\u00adme that is a trans\u00adplant from Cincin\u00adnati: the con\u00adven\u00adtion com\u00admit\u00adtee was dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00aded in their local con\u00adven\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties and looked around the gen\u00ader\u00adal area for bet\u00adter facil\u00adi\u00adties, and when they came here, they found an excel\u00adlent facil\u00adi\u00adty (and were giv\u00aden cook\u00adies, too!) Many of the staff still live in the Cincin\u00adnati area, but grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly a num\u00adber of locals are \u201cinfil\u00adtrat\u00ading\u201d the ranks, includ\u00ading myself as the local mar\u00adket\u00ading rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive, which means that I walked around the con\u00adven\u00adtion a lot, car\u00adry\u00ading my cam\u00adera and tak\u00ading pic\u00adtures of indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals. I found sev\u00ader\u00adal excel\u00adlent cos\u00adtumes in evi\u00addence and took a num\u00adber of pic\u00adtures that I call \u201cmon\u00adey shots\u201d that are des\u00adtined for my fan\u00adnish dis\u00adplay book.<\/p>\n

What I find inter\u00adest\u00ading here is the very active local ani\u00adme fans, many of whom are ardent cos\u00adtumers. That stands in coun\u00adter\u00adpoint to the seem\u00ading lack of any kind of local orga\u00adnized fan com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty: as the sec\u00adond largest city in the state, there should be enough sup\u00adport to have its own SF con\u00adven\u00adtion and be oth\u00ader\u00adwise active, yet there isn\u2019t the sup\u00adport for an SF con, and the local gam\u00ading con\u00adven\u00adtion is slow\u00adly fad\u00ading into obliv\u00adion. That\u2019s why I find the ani\u00adme con\u00adven\u00adtion so dif\u00adfer\u00adent that I hope it will be the focus of more local fan\u00adnish activity.<\/p>\n

Similarities<\/h1>\n

The sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adties between the two con\u00adven\u00adtions is the ener\u00adgy that per\u00adme\u00adates them. Its rather breath\u00adtak\u00ading for some\u00adone whose been in var\u00adi\u00adous fan\u00addoms for over 30 years to see the peo\u00adple there, many of whom are maybe \u00e2\u2026\u201c of my age: Hav\u00ading watched a num\u00adber of the fra\u00adter\u00adnal orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions my par\u00adents were a part of start slow\u00adly fad\u00ading away, I have been con\u00adcerned the same thing hap\u00adpen\u00ading with SF fan\u00addom. These two con\u00adven\u00adtions remind me that fan\u00addom is still a thriv\u00ading cul\u00adture: Per\u00adhaps not thriv\u00ading in the same areas (ani\u00adme, for instance) than when I start\u00aded, but thriv\u00ading nonetheless.<\/p>\n

In short, attend\u00ading both of these ener\u00adgetic con\u00adven\u00adtions was like refu\u00adel\u00ading: I am a social ani\u00admal yet I don\u2019t have the resources to get out as much as I would like, so a week\u00adend (or two) like this will have to suffice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
