A Flori\u00adda high school prin\u00adci\u00adpal is under fire for hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading sev\u00ader\u00adal of his stu\u00addents. The actions came to light after one of his stu\u00addents com\u00admit\u00adted sui\u00adcide, although there is no proof of the con\u00adnec\u00adtion between hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and the sui\u00adcide oth\u00ader than cer\u00adtain deroga\u00adto\u00adry ele\u00adments of the pub\u00adlic stereo\u00adtype of hypnosis.<\/p>\n

The prin\u00adci\u00adpal, Dr. George Ken\u00adney, from the news reports, is no ama\u00adteur regard\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adsis: he wrote four books on using hyp\u00adno\u00adsis for var\u00adi\u00adous stu\u00addent-relat\u00aded prob\u00adlems includ\u00ading test anx\u00adi\u00adety and sports per\u00adfor\u00admance, and on at least two report\u00aded occa\u00adsions hyp\u00adno\u00adtized stu\u00addents with their par\u00adents\u2019 con\u00adsent. Ken\u00adney\u2019s cre\u00adden\u00adtials seem very legit\u00adi\u00admate, as he learned hyp\u00adno\u00adsis at the Omni Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis Train\u00ading Cen\u00adter<\/a> in DeLand, Fla.<\/p>\n

Still, the con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsy fuels the pub\u00adlic mis\u00adcon\u00adcep\u00adtions of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in a large\u00adly neg\u00ada\u00adtive way, and thus the sub\u00adject itself is a vic\u00adtim, as well.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em><\/p>\n

First off, while he may have done so for the most inno\u00adcent of rea\u00adsons and pur\u00adpos\u00ades, still the per\u00adcep\u00adtion remains that he may (and I repeat may<\/em>) have done so on minors espe\u00adcial\u00adly with\u00adout the per\u00admis\u00adsion of their par\u00adents or guardians. In many juris\u00addic\u00adtions, that is ille\u00adgal and could very well even be termed crim\u00adi\u00adnal assault. That said, accord\u00ading to the news reports, in the case of the stu\u00addent who com\u00admit\u00adted sui\u00adcide, his par\u00adents did give the prin\u00adci\u00adpal per\u00admis\u00adsion, to help the stu\u00addent deal with test anx\u00adi\u00adety. He is under police inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion based on a 1961 law that pro\u00adhibits the prac\u00adtice of ther\u00ada\u00adpeu\u00adtic hyp\u00adno\u00adsis by lay hyp\u00adno\u00adtists with\u00adout the super\u00advi\u00adsion of a med\u00adical pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal. Ken\u00adney faces a sec\u00adond-degree mis\u00adde\u00admeanor pun\u00adish\u00adable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine if convicted.<\/p>\n

Sec\u00adond\u00adly, he did so despite the explic\u00adit injunc\u00adtion by the school board against such actions. Why the board made such a move, and that it is report\u00aded that Dr. Ken\u00adney lied about such actions, does not bode well for him and the sub\u00adject of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in general.<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, what I find slight\u00adly trou\u00adbling is the 50-year old law against lay hyp\u00adno\u00adsis which does not acknowl\u00adedge the present state of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis as it is prac\u00adticed today. I also have to won\u00adder how often such a law has been applied in recent years.<\/p>\n
