If there is ever a book that pre\u00adced\u00aded me, a ref\u00ader\u00adence on hyp\u00adno\u00adsis appear\u00adances in fic\u00adtion before I was more than pass\u00ading\u00adly inter\u00adest\u00aded in the sub\u00adject, this is it. It was also one of the first (prob\u00ada\u00adbly the<\/em> first) non\u00adfic\u00adtion books on the sub\u00adject I pur\u00adchased for The Col\u00adlec\u00adtion. Maria Tatar has com\u00adpiled an exhaus\u00adtive eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> Cen\u00adtu\u00adry mes\u00admer\u00adic lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture which is an invalu\u00adable aid in any research I could per\u00adform over that era.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSpell\u00adbound\u201d<\/em><\/a> is an exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion of the effect of the com\u00adbined con\u00adcepts of mes\u00admerism, ani\u00admal mag\u00adnet\u00adism and elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty in fic\u00adtion dur\u00ading the 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> Cen\u00adturies, focus\u00ading on the uses of all three allied sub\u00adjects as they were thought of in that time peri\u00adod. This is where I learned about the \u2018recov\u00adery rooms\u2019 for Mes\u00admer\u2019s clients in Paris, on how they were used for peo\u00adple who were under\u00adgo\u00ading \u2018hys\u00adteric reac\u00adtions\u2019: my first thought was \u201cMy god, they\u2019re hav\u00ading an orgasm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> What \u201cSpell\u00adbound\u201d<\/em> does is rein\u00adforce my belief that it real\u00adly all start\u00aded with Mes\u00admer, or, rather, the after-effects of Mes\u00admer. What I am refer\u00adring to is the con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsy not only involv\u00ading Mes\u00admer\u2019s prac\u00adtices in Paris, but also the con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsies sur\u00adround\u00ading and between his fol\u00adlow\u00aders, adher\u00adents and detrac\u00adtors. What this book also did was expose me to the amount of mes\u00admer\u00adic and hyp\u00adnot\u00adic lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture from the 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> Cen\u00adturies that was writ\u00adten in the wake of Mes\u00admer and dur\u00ading and because of the peri\u00adod\u00adic revivals of the inter\u00adest in mes\u00admerism. I nev\u00ader would have known about such authors as the Ger\u00adman writer E T A Hoff\u00adman, nor how mes\u00admerism appeared in the writ\u00adings of the French author Balzac or the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan writer Nathaniel Hawthorne; well, at least not quite yet. This book also drove home the con\u00adcept that hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and mes\u00admerism in fic\u00adtion and lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture has its begin\u00adnings in the era of Mes\u00admer, not after.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> \u201cSpell\u00adbound\u201d<\/em> is a tough read: its not writ\u00adten for a pop\u00adu\u00adlar audi\u00adence, it reads more like a doc\u00adtor\u00adal the\u00adsis, as it is writ\u00adten tak\u00ading the assump\u00adtion the read\u00ader is famil\u00adiar with the indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals and sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions described, some\u00adthing that would only apply schol\u00adars and stu\u00addents of the peri\u00adod: cer\u00adtain\u00adly that did\u00adn\u2019t apply in my sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion but I was able to bat\u00adtle my way through it. But it is<\/em> one of the few non\u00adfic\u00adtion works on the sub\u00adject of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis in lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture and def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly belongs in the Collection.<\/p>\n
