When Dave Arne\u00adson<\/a> showed Gary Gygax<\/a> the new game he and his friends were play\u00ading, it prob\u00ada\u00adbly did\u00adn\u2019t occurr to either that they were on the brink of cre\u00adat\u00ading not only a new game but an entire\u00adly new type of game, result\u00ading in a rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary new gam\u00ading industry.<\/p>\n

Dave Arne\u00adson took the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal minia\u00adture game, where minia\u00adtures rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded groups of indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals and start\u00aded using them to rep\u00adre\u00adsent indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals. He also added the ele\u00adments of char\u00adac\u00adter class\u00ades and expe\u00adri\u00adence lev\u00adels, allow\u00ading for char\u00adac\u00adter spe\u00adcial\u00adiza\u00adtion and growith. This was a rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion, in that play\u00aders could project them\u00adselves into the char\u00adac\u00adter, devel\u00adop\u00ading them over time and play. Since both he and Gary Gygax were avid mina\u00adture ship game play\u00aders, he shjowed Gary his game and togeth\u00ader they cre\u00adat\u00aded Dun\u00adgeons & Drag\u00adons<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As source mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, they drew on the fan\u00adta\u00adsy lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture of the time, the late 1960\u2019s and ear\u00adly 1970\u2019s, espe\u00adcial\u00adly such works as the new\u00adly pub\u00adlished Lord of the Rings<\/em> tril\u00ado\u00adgy and the Conan nov\u00adels that were being reprint\u00aded at the time, not to men\u00adtion a great deal of oth\u00ader fan\u00adta\u00adsy fic\u00adtion. They also incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded a sys\u00adtem of mag\u00adic spells based on Jack Vance<\/a>\u2019s Dying Earth<\/a><\/i> nov\u00adels and short sto\u00adries but also includ\u00ading ele\u00adments from oth\u00ader fic\u00adtion or actu\u00adal mag\u00adic sys\u00adtems. That sys\u00adtem involved mem\u00ado\u00adriz\u00ading spells and lat\u00ader cast\u00ading them, caus\u00ading the magi\u00adcian to for\u00adget the spell until re-memorized.<\/p>\n

In addi\u00adtion to the sys\u00adtem, a whole host of mag\u00adic spells were cre\u00adat\u00aded for the expand\u00ading class\u00ades of spell\u00adcast\u00aders, includ\u00ading not only wiz\u00adards but priests and beyond, that would even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly coa\u00adlesce into a series of mag\u00adi\u00adcal \u2018schools\u2019. Each school involved mag\u00adic of a cer\u00adtain theme or type: for exam\u00adple, the school of illu\u00adsion whose spells cause hal\u00adlu\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtions, spec\u00adtral images, etc., where\u00adase the school of div\u00adina\u00adtion involves spells that seek out infor\u00adma\u00adtion. The par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar school of inter\u00adest here is the school of enchant\u00adment. Orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly, enchant\u00adment involved the enchant\u00adi\u00adng of tools and devices with mag\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00aders and prop\u00ader\u00adties but it even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly changed to involve spells that enchant\u00aded or con\u00adtrolled others.<\/p>\n

And there were a lot<\/em> of enchant\u00adment spells. A begin\u00adning wiz\u00adard had a wide port\u00adfo\u00adlio of spells to choose from, for all nine schools of mag\u00adic, and that includ\u00aded such first lev\u00adel enchant\u00adment spells as Charm Per\u00adson<\/em> and Sleep<\/em>. The over\u00adall (even\u00adtu\u00adal) nine lev\u00adels of wiz\u00adard spells include spells such as Geas<\/em> (which com\u00admands the tar\u00adget of the spell to accom\u00adplish a cer\u00adtain task). That is not to say priests did\u00adn\u2019t have enchant\u00adment spells as well, only that they were not col\u00adlect\u00aded into wiz\u00adard\u00adly schools. A lat\u00ader addi\u00adtion to the char\u00adac\u00adter class\u00ades, bards, were espe\u00adcial\u00adly good at enchant\u00adment spells. Their his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal antescen\u00addants were the bards of Celtic leg\u00adend, capa\u00adble of enthralling audi\u00adences or defeat\u00ading ene\u00admies with their song. The bard class had this pow\u00ader as a nat\u00adur\u00adal and super\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal abil\u00adi\u00adty, plus they could also cast spells through their songs, many of which had enchant\u00adment effects.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the open-end\u00aded nature of the game, soon oth\u00ader com\u00adpa\u00adnies and indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals were pub\u00adlish\u00ading sup\u00adple\u00admen\u00adtal rules to Dun\u00adgeons & Drag\u00adons<\/em>, fur\u00adther adding to the spell lists, includ\u00ading enchant\u00adment spells. And once the con\u00adcept of role\u00adplay\u00ading games was devel\u00adoped, more game sys\u00adtems were pub\u00adlished. And since hyp\u00adnot\u00adic and enchant\u00adment spells and pow\u00aders were such preva\u00adlent theme both in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal game and in the under\u00adly\u00ading source mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, they would appear in many of the sub\u00adse\u00adquent games and sys\u00adtems, espe\u00adcial\u00adly the super\u00adhero game sys\u00adtems and the lat\u00ader occult (espe\u00adcial\u00adly vam\u00adpire) game sys\u00adtems. And that does\u00adn\u2019t include sys\u00adtems which replace spells with psion\u00adics or mechan\u00adi\u00adcal devices as per the set\u00adting, but they still have the same function.<\/p>\n

And it all stems from one game play\u00ader\u2019s leap \u2018out\u00adside the box\u2019 of tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal minia\u00adture games.<\/p>\n

It is fit\u00adting that I devote this post to Dun\u00adgeons & Drag\u00adons<\/em>, as I will be attend\u00ading Gen\u00adCon<\/a> this week\u00adend. This is the con\u00adven\u00adtion that pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adized the game almost 40 years ago, the con\u00adven\u00adtion Gary Gygax him\u00adself start\u00aded in his base\u00adment and which has grown to the largest gam\u00ading con\u00adven\u00adtion in the US. I\u2019ve been attend\u00ading for the past 32 years in a row and it is one of the few con\u00adven\u00adtions that I attend at all any more, but it is also one of the con\u00adven\u00adtions that will try to attend as long as I am able.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
