Last week, web\u00adsite Io9<\/a> pub\u00adlished not just one, but two posts deal\u00ading with mind con\u00adtrol themes. How\u00adev\u00ader, I have to give both posts only a mediocre rating.<\/p>\n

People Who Gained Superpowers From Being Brainwashed<\/a><\/h2>\n

Ten indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals from SF lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, movies, tele\u00advi\u00adsion, comics, etc, all of whom acquired their pow\u00aders from being brain\u00adwashed. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, the his\u00adto\u00adries of these indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals don\u2019t quite match up with description.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary<\/em>: Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, out of the list giv\u00aden, only a cou\u00adple actu\u00adal\u00adly fit this title. The rest were indeed brain\u00adwashed (or some\u00adthing sim\u00adi\u00adlar: the arti\u00adcle\u2019s def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of brain\u00adwash\u00ading is over\u00adly broad) and gained super\u00adpow\u00aders but those pow\u00aders were not direct\u00adly the result of the brain\u00adwash\u00ading. (I\u2019m tak\u00ading a more lit\u00ader\u00adal view of the title here than I sus\u00adpect the author does: I still think its misleading.)<\/p>\n

The only ones list\u00aded that actu\u00adal\u00adly fit the descrip\u00adtion would be Cap\u00adtain Under\u00adpants<\/a>, an auto\u00adcrat\u00adic ele\u00admen\u00adtary school prin\u00adci\u00adpal who was hyp\u00adno\u00adtized into becom\u00ading the super\u00adhero Cap\u00adtain Under\u00adpants when trig\u00adgered; the Mar\u00advel char\u00adac\u00adters Black Wid\u00adow and Win\u00adter Sol\u00addier, both Sovi\u00adet Cold War black ops who were brain\u00adwashed into their iden\u00adti\u00adfies as part of their train\u00ading; and Riv\u00ader Tam, again, brain\u00adwashed as part of her phys\u00adi\u00adcal and psy\u00adchic training.<\/p>\n

Most of the oth\u00aders were brain\u00adwashed and giv\u00aden pow\u00aders at the same time, but being brain\u00adwashed was not<\/em> the cause or source of those pow\u00aders. Even oth\u00aders, such as Simon Phoenix (\u201cDemo\u00adli\u00adtion Man\u201d<\/em>), already had their abil\u00adi\u00adties before being brain\u00adwashed, or Max Gue\u00advara (\u201cDark Angel\u201d<\/em>), who was already being brain\u00adwashed before his train\u00ading (on top of genet\u00adic tin\u00adker\u00ading which occurred before birth.)<\/p>\n

And at least one does\u00adn\u2019t even come close to fit\u00adting the brain\u00adwash\u00ading theme: the Mar\u00advel char\u00adac\u00adter Cap\u00adtain Uni\u00adverse, the iden\u00adti\u00adty tak\u00aden by any\u00adone pos\u00adsessed by the Uni-Pow\u00ader. Although the descrip\u00adtion says that when pos\u00adsessed by the pow\u00ader, they gain hero\u00adic atti\u00adtudes, but this is more a case of those atti\u00adtudes already present in the per\u00adson selected.<\/p>\n

Anoth\u00ader that does\u00adn\u2019t fit the theme is Neo from the Matrix movies: the arti\u00adcle tries to claim his train\u00ading in the mar\u00adtial arts through mem\u00ado\u00adry implants is a form of brain\u00adwash\u00ading, yet the con\u00adcept also has to include some kind of men\u00adtal con\u00adtrol, which is not appar\u00adent. The arti\u00adcle says that the brain\u00adwash\u00ading includ\u00aded indoc\u00adtri\u00adna\u00adtion about reject\u00ading the real\u00adi\u00adty of the Matrix but I think that\u2019s just assump\u00adtion on the part of the author.<\/p>\n

10 Mind Control Clich\u00e9s<\/a><\/h2>\n

10 clich\u00e9s that seem\u00ading\u00adly every evil mind con\u00adtroller has. Well, not every one, but a lot from the comics to have many of them, but there are as many excep\u00adtions to the rules as there are exam\u00adples. A cou\u00adple seem to real\u00adly reach\u00ading to be includ\u00aded, and some of the clich\u00ades are also woe\u00adful\u00adly incom\u00adplete. For example:<\/p>\n

1 ) Mind con\u00adtrollers com\u00adpen\u00adsate for a lack of phys\u00adi\u00adcal prowess<\/strong>:<\/strong> when you look at most mind con\u00adtrollers, you are struck by their phys\u00adi\u00adcal defor\u00admaties: Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor X is wheel\u00adchair bound, the Pup\u00adpet Mas\u00adter is dwarfish with an over\u00adsized head, Mes\u00admero has green skin, Hec\u00adtor Ham\u00admond has an incred\u00adi\u00adbly enlarged head, etc. Yes, this is a valid cliche, but always for men and only for men, nev\u00ader for women. The cliche for mind con\u00adtrol\u00adling women like the White Queen, Sat\u00adurn Girl or Hyp\u00adno\u00adtia is that they are the oppo\u00adsite, excep\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly phys\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly endowed (in all sens\u00ades of the word.)<\/p>\n

2 ) Fin\u00adgers on the fore\u00adhead<\/strong>: Pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly used only by the char\u00adac\u00adters with psy\u00adchic abil\u00adi\u00adties, which is a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant but still pro\u00adpor\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly small group of mind con\u00adtrollers. There are about as many (Vam\u00adpirella) who use the \u201clook into my eyes\u201d cliche, oth\u00aders who use mag\u00adi\u00adcal ges\u00adtures (Man\u00addrake the Magi\u00adcian) and then there\u2019s the ones who use strict\u00adly mechan\u00adi\u00adcal devices (the Con\u00adtroller, Uni\u00adver\u00adso) who don\u2019t have any kind of ges\u00adtur\u00ading. (Then again, Uni\u00adver\u00adso, in his first incar\u00adna\u00adtion, did tend to grand\u00adstand a lot.)<\/p>\n

3 ) Psy\u00adchic manip\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion, mind-warp\u00ading drugs, hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, and sub\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adnal nudg\u00ading<\/strong>: Of course, there\u2019s also mechan\u00adi\u00adcal devices (Doc\u00adtor Drakken\u2019s mind con\u00adtrol chip or the MKUl\u00adtra machines), alien implants, sor\u00adcery and, of course, don\u2019t for\u00adget the Orbital Mind Con\u00adtrol Lasers. (I won\u00adder who\u2019s con\u00adtrol\u00adling them this turn? If I don\u2019t know, then prob\u00ada\u00adbly I\u2019m not cleared for that infor\u00adma\u00adtion. Fnord.)<\/p>\n

4 ) Brain\u00adwash\u00ading hench\u00admen<\/strong>: While it may be the heroes best way to infil\u00adtrate the vil\u00adlain\u2019s head\u00adquar\u00adters or to avoid cap\u00adture (\u201cThese aren\u2019t the droids you\u2019re look\u00ading for.\u201d) its bet\u00adter used by the vil\u00adlain to ensure the loy\u00adal\u00adty of his underlings.<\/p>\n

5 ) It\u2019s poor form to mind con\u00adtrol non-vil\u00adlains<\/strong>: Yet even the heroes do it, except they have episodes of angst about it: how many times did Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor X mind-wipe peo\u00adple who saw the X\u2011Men, or, in the first movie, men\u00adtal\u00adly blank an entire mall because one of his stu\u00addents used his pow\u00aders with\u00adout per\u00admis\u00adsion? Then there\u2019s also the famous inci\u00addent when Zatan\u00adna mag\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly erased spe\u00adcif\u00adic mem\u00ado\u00adries in a num\u00adber of Jus\u00adtice League oppo\u00adnents, set\u00adting off what would be a seri\u00adous\u00adly trag\u00adic event and the near-col\u00adlapse of the League itself, many years later.<\/p>\n

6 ) Blank stares<\/strong>: Blank stares are the hall\u00admark of mind con\u00adtrol, but they\u2019re only part of the over\u00adall whole pic\u00adture of the total blank look of some\u00adone total\u00adly entranced. How\u00adev\u00ader, in the Ori\u00adent, its a lit\u00adtle dif\u00adfer\u00adent: mind con\u00adtrol is shown by a total\u00adly fea\u00adture\u00adless iris.<\/p>\n

7 ) Mind con\u00adtrol\u00adling hats and hel\u00admets<\/strong>: Not a very preva\u00adlent cliche here, and one that is almost strict\u00adly a source of con\u00adtrol\u00adling the one wear\u00ading the hat: about the only one who makes con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable use of the cliche here is the Bat\u00adman vil\u00adlain the Mad Hat\u00adter; maybe he holds the patent on the design and does\u00adn\u2019t mar\u00adket it?<\/p>\n

8 ) Mind con\u00adtrollers are creepy<\/strong>: Its one of the first things any mind con\u00adtroller learns, how to keep their pow\u00aders a secret (even if it takes using their pow\u00aders to do so.) Such pow\u00aders also make very good Psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal Dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtages: Deep Secret for heroes to have.<\/p>\n

9 ) Every\u00adthing\u2019s more awe\u00adsome on the astral plane<\/strong>: The Astral Plane only because the vaca\u00adtion spot of choice for psy\u00adchic bat\u00adtles once Steve Ditko start\u00aded draw\u00ading Doc\u00adtor Strange, but even then it is over\u00adrat\u00aded. Most\u00adly the bat\u00adtles take place in the mind of one or both of the com\u00adbat\u00adants, although some\u00adtimes the bat\u00adtle is between invis\u00adi\u00adble men\u00adtal projections.<\/p>\n

10 ) Mind con\u00adtrol bat\u00adtles end with every\u00adone\u2019s brains explod\u00ading and faces melt\u00ading<\/strong>: The image here is so 80\u2019s. Nowa\u00addays such bat\u00adtles tend to end with only a bloody nose or bleed\u00ading from the ears as the only sign of a struggle.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary<\/em>: In try\u00ading to vio\u00adlate every one of the 10 list\u00aded clich\u00e9s, the author actu\u00adal\u00adly man\u00adaged to cre\u00adate the most bor\u00ading mind con\u00adtrol\u00adling char\u00adac\u00adter ever seen.<\/p>\n
