\nSep\u00adtem\u00adber 24th<\/sup> through Octo\u00adber 1st<\/sup> has been des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded \u201cBanned Books Week<\/a>\u201d by the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Library Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion<\/a> and the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Book\u00adsellers Foun\u00adda\u00adtion for Free\u00addom of Expres\u00adsion<\/a>. Every year, ever since 1982, these two orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions pub\u00adlish a list of the books that account for the most attempts to some\u00adhow ban or restrict them the pre\u00advi\u00adous year. <\/p>\n

\nNow, the ques\u00adtion is, why is that some\u00adthing this blog should care about? <\/p>\n

\nWell, for one thing, as a writer, it behooves me to defend my fel\u00adlow writ\u00aders from this assault not only on their own liveli\u00adhoods but also against the major\u00adi\u00adty who either don\u2019t care or even sup\u00adport the ideas and issues exem\u00adpli\u00adfied in the books a few want banned. I feel it is a writer\u2019s job (and any oth\u00ader cre\u00adative per\u00adson) to explore ideas that some peo\u00adple want kept hid\u00adden. This is more than just pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal, its per\u00adson\u00adal: I know many peo\u00adple in the writ\u00ading and cre\u00adative field (this applies not just to books but also to comics, movies, TV shows, you name it) and this affects them, as well. <\/p>\n

\nBut more impor\u00adtant\u00adly, what is involved is the restric\u00adtion of the flow of infor\u00adma\u00adtion, which is a major con\u00adcern of mine and one of the rea\u00adsons for writ\u00ading this blog. <\/p>\n

\nAnd last\u00adly, it is because of the sub\u00adject of this blog. By and large, such banned books are often occult relat\u00aded, whether fic\u00adtion\u00adal (\u201cTwi\u00adlight\u201d<\/em>) or fac\u00adtu\u00adal, and in some loca\u00adtions, even the actu\u00adal sub\u00adject of the blog, hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, what with the stereo\u00adtypes involved, is a sub\u00adject of the supernatural. <\/p>\n

\nAnd the above does\u00adn\u2019t even account the \u201cunof\u00adfi\u00adcial\u201d ban\u00adning that takes place when peo\u00adple check out books from the library with the intent of destroy\u00ading them or sim\u00adply keep\u00ading them. <\/p>\n

\nIf should be not\u00aded that one of the peren\u00adni\u00adal banned books is \u201cBrave New World\u201d<\/em> by Aldous Hux\u00adley, which is about a dystopi\u00adan future where the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion is, among oth\u00ader things, con\u00addi\u00adtioned from the womb into their des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded roles in life. <\/p>\n
