\nDaugh\u00adters of Evil World Con\u00adquerors real\u00adly have only two options in life: be their father\u2019s ador\u00ading min\u00adion who ulti\u00admate\u00adly falls for the Hero and helps him defeat her father, or strike out on your own and try to out-con\u00adquer him. Fah Lo Suee<\/a>, daugh\u00adter of the inscruitable Man\u00addarin Fu Manchu<\/a>, is entire\u00adly the lat\u00adter. But while Fah Lo Suee in the nov\u00adels was more the for\u00admer, only once real\u00adly act\u00ading in the role of con\u00adqueror in place of her father, in the Mar\u00advel com\u00adic \u201cShang-Chi, Mas\u00adter of Kung Fu\u201d<\/a><\/i>, she was a re-occur\u00adring char\u00adac\u00adter with her own agen\u00adda who bat\u00adtled her father as much as she bat\u00adtled her own half-broth\u00ader Shang-Chi. <\/a>\n<\/p>\n \n\n<\/p>\n \nHis\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> In 1972, Mar\u00advel Comics obtained the lit\u00ader\u00adary rights to Sax <\/a>Rohmer<\/a>\u2019s Fu Manchu nov\u00adels in order to pub\u00adlish a mar\u00adtial arts com\u00adic enti\u00adtled \u201cMas\u00adter of Kung Fu\u201d<\/em> to take advan\u00adtage of the pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty of the TV series Kung Fu<\/a><\/i> and the cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading increased inter\u00adest in mar\u00adtial arts action. The license allowed Mar\u00advel to use the exist\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters, aged from the 1920\u2019s era, with a new lead char\u00adac\u00adter, Shang Chi. Shang Chi was trained to be his father\u2019s assas\u00adsin but reject\u00aded that path as one that degrad\u00aded his quest to advance him\u00adself. (Trans\u00adlat\u00aded, his name meant \u201cthe ris\u00ading and advanc\u00ading of the spirit\u201d.) <\/p>\n \nOne of the char\u00adac\u00adters used was Fah Lo Suee, Fu Manchu\u2019s seduc\u00adtive\u00adly hyp\u00adnot\u00adic (or hyp\u00adnot\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly seduc\u00adtive) daugh\u00adter, who shared her father\u2019s hyp\u00adnot\u00adic prowess, aid\u00aded by her exot\u00adic Eurasian beau\u00adty, cun\u00adning charm and ruth\u00adless nature. Fah Lo Suee is the \u201cpet\u201d name giv\u00aden her by her father, as her real name is nev\u00ader used: it is said to mean \u201csweet per\u00adfume\u201d although Rohmer\u2019s Chi\u00adnese is a lit\u00adtle faulty. <\/p>\n \nFah Lo Suee would make sev\u00ader\u00adal appear\u00adances in \u201cMas\u00adter of Kung Fu\u201d<\/em>, always with the intent of thwart\u00ading her father\u2019s schemes or pro\u00admot\u00ading her own. The fol\u00adlow\u00ading are the most relevant. <\/p>\n \nThe first appear\u00adance of Fah Lo Suee. She uses her hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders on young Egyp\u00adtol\u00ado\u00adgist Robert Gre\u00adville, in order to locate the fabled ruby eyes of The Gold\u00aden Bee\u00adtle<\/a> of Seth-Amon, twin rubies that have the pow\u00ader to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize even beyond her own abil\u00adi\u00adty, which she is sus\u00adpect\u00aded of desir\u00ading in order to con\u00adtrol her more pow\u00ader\u00adful father. Gre\u00adville is first placed under her seduc\u00adtive spell by her mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous appear\u00adance in his rooms at night (described above) and giv\u00aden an emer\u00adald ring as a reminder of her eyes. <\/p>\n \n[Robert Gre\u00adville] \u201c\u2026 and there she was<\/strong>, stand\u00ading right at the foot of my bed as proud as could be<\/strong>. She was dark \u2026 sul\u00adtry<\/strong>. I sup\u00adpose you might say she was cold\u00adly sen\u00adsu\u00adal<\/strong>, if you know what I mean<\/strong>. And her dress<\/strong> \u2014 sheer black satin<\/strong> which looked as though it had been paint\u00aded<\/strong> to her body \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Nay\u00adland-Smith] \u201cAnd did she speak<\/strong> to you?\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Gre\u00adville] \u201cYes<\/strong>. Her voice was low, throaty<\/strong> \u2014 it seemed to purr<\/strong>, and yet there was no doubt that she was capa\u00adble of a snarl<\/strong>. She told me that I\u2019d soon find<\/strong> what I had been search\u00ading<\/strong> for \u2014 the Ruby Eyes of the Gold\u00aden Bee\u00adtle<\/strong>\u201d.\n<\/p>\n \n[Nay\u00adland Smith] \u201cAnd her eyes<\/strong>, Lord Robert \u2026 ? What were they<\/strong> like?\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Gre\u00adville] \u201cThe purest jade green<\/strong> \u2026 and pierc\u00ading\u00adly hyp\u00adnot\u00adic<\/strong>. They actu\u00adal\u00adly seemed to glow<\/strong> with\u00adin the dark\u00adness of my bed cham\u00adber<\/strong>. You must not \u2014\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Fah Lo Suee] \u201cGaze into my eyes again<\/strong>, Nay\u00adland-Smith, and ask<\/strong> your\u00adself how you could have refused<\/strong> my love<\/strong> \u2026 but know<\/strong> with cer\u00adtain\u00adty that you can nev\u00ader<\/strong> refuse my com\u00admand<\/strong> \u2026 for you are mine<\/strong>, Nay\u00adland-Smith \u2026 mine again<\/strong>, after forty long years<\/strong> \u2026\u201d}\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \nFah Lo Suee, hav\u00ading sur\u00advived the explo\u00adsion that was meant to kill her and seal the Ruby Eyes with\u00adin the Pharao\u00adh\u2019s tomb for\u00adev\u00ader, uses the Ruby Eyes to con\u00adtrol a force of her father\u2019s Si-Fan assas\u00adsins. Only one of the assas\u00adsins has resist\u00aded her ampli\u00adfied hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders, and he aids Shang Chi in hold\u00ading off the oth\u00ader assas\u00adsins while Shang Chi steals the ruby ear\u00adrings that Fah Lo Sueee has had the Ruby Eyes made into. <\/p>\n \nAfter Reston was knocked down from behind, he woke up in sec\u00adonds, but decid\u00aded to play dead, watch\u00ading Tar\u00adrant tell Fah Lo Suee to kill him, but she decid\u00aded to keep him alive. After Reston had escaped, he watched Fah Lo Suee and her men from afar, but was knocked down by Chankar and brought to Fah Lo Suee, who brought him under her con\u00adtrol with her mimosa perfume. <\/p>\n \nLat\u00ader, after Shang and Leiko man\u00adaged to escape, Fah Lo Suee left in a heli\u00adcopter, leav\u00ading the mind-con\u00adtrolled Reston scream\u00ading and beg\u00adging for her to take him with her. <\/p>\n \nFah Lo Suee appears as part of a con\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adcy to con\u00adtrol British Mil\u00adi\u00adtary Intel\u00adli\u00adgence (M.I.6) Sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly, her intent is not to destroy it, to strength\u00aden it for use against her father. She is dis\u00adcov\u00adered by an asso\u00adciate of Shang Chi\u2019s, Black Jack Tarr, a big, bruis\u00ading Englishman. <\/p>\n \n[Tarr, hold\u00ading a gun on Fah Lo Suee.] \u201cI under\u00adstand awright, you two-faced vix\u00aden. You think I could for\u00adget how you\u2019ve tricked me time and again?\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Fah Lo Suee stares at Tarr] \u201cNor can you for\u00adget my eyes, Black Jack Tarr \u2026 the spell of gold\u00aden dreams dwelling deep with my eyes \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Tarr] \u201cI don\u2019t want \u2026 I \u2026 can\u2019t \u2026 can\u2019t \u2026 your \u2026 eyes \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n \n[Fah Lo Suee] \u201cPut down the gun, Jack Tarr \u2026 and kiss me.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \nTarr unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly does\u00adn\u2019t get much plea\u00adsure from the kiss, as Zaran, Fah Lo Suee\u2019s enforcer, inter\u00adrupts them and mis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly believes Tarr will\u00ading\u00adly com\u00adplied. He then pro\u00adceeds to beat the tar {sor\u00adry} out of Tarr in jealousy. <\/p>\n \nNotes: <\/em>Because of licens\u00ading issues, Mar\u00advel has been unable to ful\u00adly col\u00adlect and reprint the com\u00adic series and has been forced to obscure ref\u00ader\u00adences of Fu Manchu. <\/p>\n \nCom\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Fah Lo Suee in these comics seems more akin to her appear\u00adance in the The Mask of Fu Manchu<\/a><\/i> (1932) ver\u00adsion star\u00adring Boris Karloff<\/a> and Myr\u00adna Loy<\/a> than in any of the nov\u00adels, where she has a more lim\u00adit\u00aded role under the direc\u00adtion of her father, except for \u201cThe Daugh\u00adter of Fu Manchu\u201d<\/em> where she is stand\u00ading in for her father. Here she is almost as ruth\u00adless as her father, but on a more lim\u00adit\u00aded scale: her goals are often inscrutable although they often in con\u00adflict with her father\u2019s, where even she has dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty oppos\u00ading him.
