How\u00adev\u00ader, his eter\u00adnal foe, Sir Den\u00adnis Nay\u00adland Smith, is always ready to con\u00adtest the sin\u00adis\u00adter Man\u00addar\u00adin\u2019s plot. <\/p>\n
\n\n\nThe hyp\u00adnot\u00adic action starts imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly: sci\u00aden\u00adtist Otto Lentz is brought before Fu Manchu and his sin\u00adis\u00adter daugh\u00adter Lin Tang<\/a> (played by Tsai Chin<\/a>: it is obvi\u00adous that she is sup\u00adposed to be Fah Lo Suee.) in a throne room lined with the placid forms of a multi\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal group of young women, all the \u201cbrides\u201d of Fu Manchu. There, he is ordered to coop\u00ader\u00adate. When he refus\u00ades, his beau\u00adti\u00adful daugh\u00adter Marie is brought forth, look\u00ading equal\u00adly as placid, is if drugged. She is led before Lin Tang, who takes the girl\u2019s head in her hands and clos\u00ades the girl\u2019s eyes with her thumbs. When released, Marie opens her eyes to stare direct\u00adly in the eyes of her cap\u00adtor. Just that eas\u00adi\u00adly, Marie is under the con\u00adtrol of Lin Tang and Fu Manchu. At their direc\u00adtion, she sends anoth\u00ader of the \u201cbrides\u201d to her death, and her father is black\u00admailed with the threat of awak\u00aden\u00ading her with the full knowl\u00adedge of her action. Only then does the audi\u00adence get an idea of what the sin\u00adis\u00adter Man\u00addar\u00adin\u2019s plot is: the sci\u00aden\u00adtists have all been work\u00ading on parts of a device that will trans\u00admit destruc\u00adtive radio waves to any\u00adwhere in the world. With it, he plans to destroy an upcom\u00ading arms con\u00adfer\u00adence, sow\u00ading dis\u00ador\u00adder and chaos in the West. <\/p>\n
\nSir Den\u00adnis Nay\u00adland Smith, how\u00adev\u00ader, is always there to oppose the sin\u00adis\u00adter Man\u00addarin, and through his inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion into the dis\u00adap\u00adpear\u00adances of the \u201cbrides\u201d is try\u00ading to pre\u00advent the next dis\u00adap\u00adpear\u00adance. To that end, he employs the help of Franz Bauer, Marie\u2019s fiancee, and arranges for him to be tak\u00aden in place of the next sci\u00aden\u00adtist on Fu Manchu\u2019s list. Lack\u00ading the aid of the sci\u00aden\u00adtist, and with Nay\u00adland Smith clos\u00ading in on both the Lon\u00addon hide\u00adout and Fu Manchu\u2019s hid\u00adden lair, the final assault on the con\u00adfer\u00adence goes ter\u00adri\u00adbly awry, as the trans\u00admit\u00adter is over\u00adloaded and the entire instal\u00adla\u00adtion destroyed. Befit\u00adting their sta\u00adtus, Fu Manchu and Lin Tang escape through a secret pas\u00adsage and sur\u00advive the destruc\u00adtion, in order to return in the next movie. <\/p>\n
\nThere are three oth\u00ader hyp\u00adnot\u00adic scenes: the first, when Lin Tang enters the din\u00ading room with all of the \u201cbrides\u201d to take Otto Lentz away; the sec\u00adond, when anoth\u00ader of the \u201cbrides\u201d is brought before Fu Manchu; and the last is dur\u00ading the riot when the \u201cbrides\u201d attempt to escape. There is also a brief moment at the end of the movie, after all of the \u201cbrides\u201d were res\u00adcued and Fu Manchu\u2019s lair destroyed, when they all pause, turn and stare blankly back at the ruin, as if hear\u00ading the voice of Fu Manchu com\u00admand\u00ading them one last time. <\/p>\n

- \nIn the first, Lentz and Marie are say\u00ading good\u00adbye when Lin Tang enters the room: at that moment, all of the girls stand and are entranced. Marie, even, is com\u00adplete\u00adly obliv\u00adi\u00adous to her father, see\u00ading and hear\u00ading only Ling Tang. <\/li>\n
- \nIn the sec\u00adond, the bride is ter\u00adri\u00adfied by the sight of a pit full of snakes, then, in her ter\u00adri\u00adfied state, is mes\u00admer\u00adized by Fu Manchu himself. <\/li>\n
- \nIn the last, dur\u00ading the riot as the \u201cbrides\u201d are bat\u00adtling the guards. Into that chaos strides Lin Tang, who takes one of the women by the shoul\u00adders and stares into her eyes, entranc\u00ading her. How\u00adev\u00ader, anoth\u00ader of the \u201cbrides\u201d sees that and knocks Lin Tang uncon\u00adscious. Not so when the impe\u00adri\u00adous Fu Manchu enters, as which point every one of the \u201cbrides\u201d falls back into their placid trance state. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
\n\nThe above clip is actu\u00adal\u00adly from two dif\u00adfer\u00adent movies of this series: the first half is from the third movie, \u201cThe Vengeance of Fu Manchu\u201d<\/a>, while the sec\u00adond half, start\u00ading at about 0:53, is from this movie, and is a longer and bet\u00adter ver\u00adsion of the scene shown pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly. It also speaks of Marie being \u201cpre\u00adpared\u201d which tends to con\u00adfirm that she is some\u00adhow drugged. Just ignore the ran\u00addom clip insert\u00aded some\u00adhow in the middle. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\nCom\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> The sec\u00adond of five Fu Manchu movies star\u00adring Christo\u00adpher Lee<\/a> in the title role. \u201cThe Brides of Fu Manchu\u201d<\/a><\/i>, a sequel to \u201cThe Face of Fu Manchu\u201d<\/a><\/em> of the pre\u00advi\u00adous year. It has noth\u00ading to do with the nov\u00adel \u201cThe Bride of Fu Manchu\u201d<\/em>, which is about <\/p>\n
\nIt should be not\u00aded that this is the first time that Fah Lo Suee (or what\u00adev\u00ader she is named in the movies) was played by a true Asian actress: before this, the char\u00adac\u00adter was always por\u00adtrayed by a West\u00adern actress, includ\u00ading Myr\u00adna Loy<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n
\nRec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> For sheer his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal val\u00adue, I would rec\u00adom\u00admend the movie, if it can be found. Christo\u00adpher Lee has a cer\u00adtain amount of sedate fun in this movie, which I believe is the best of the five of this series, and pos\u00adsi\u00adbly of all the lat\u00ader Fu Manchu movies, which is not real\u00adly say\u00ading much. <\/p>\n
