\nEdmund Shaftes\u00adbury<\/a> was the pseu\u00addo\u00adnym of Web\u00adster Edger\u00adly (1852\u20131926). Edger\u00adly was a pro\u00adlif\u00adic writer on a vari\u00adety of sub\u00adjects, pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant\u00adly self-improve\u00adment (not lim\u00adit\u00aded to per\u00adson\u00adal mag\u00adnet\u00adism) and health. The fol\u00adlow\u00ading descrip\u00adtion is from Alfred Arm\u00adstrong<\/a>\u2019s web site on Web\u00adster Edger\u00adly<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\nAlbert Web\u00adster Edger\u00adly was a self-help guru, a crank and a racist big\u00adot. Pos\u00adsessed of seem\u00ading\u00adly bound\u00adless ener\u00adgy, from his twen\u00adties until his death he wrote and pub\u00adlished many books and found\u00aded a series of orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to health and self-improve\u00adment, main\u00adly under his pseu\u00addo\u00adnym \u201cEdmund (or Edmonde) Shaftes\u00adbury\u201d. As the beget\u00adter of the \u201cRal\u00adston Health Club\u201d he also used the name \u201cDr Everett Ralston\u201d. <\/p>\n

\nIn about 1900, William Dan\u00adforth invit\u00aded \u201cDr Ral\u00adston\u201d to par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpate in his Puri\u00adna Whole\u00adfood Com\u00adpa\u00adny. At that time Edger\u00adly\u2019s Health Club had a size\u00adable fol\u00adlow\u00ading [accord\u00ading to this<\/a>, over 800,000] and he was not\u00aded for his pro\u00adnounce\u00adments on diet, which were com\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble with Dan\u00adforth\u2019s own phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy. The com\u00adpa\u00adny took a new name, Ral\u00adston Puri\u00adna, under which it still trad\u00aded until rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly recent\u00adly, when it was acquired by Nestl\u00e9. <\/p>\n

\nEdger\u00adly attempt\u00aded in 1905 to put his utopi\u00adan ideas into prac\u00adtice when he found\u00aded a com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of Ral\u00adstonites at \u201cRal\u00adston Heights\u201d. As is ever the case with such endeav\u00adors, it was not a success. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nEdger\u00adly also cre\u00adat\u00aded \u201cRal\u00adston\u00adism\u201d<\/a>, a \u201cminor social move\u00adment\u201d based on his writ\u00adings, all of which was to enable the fol\u00adlow\u00ader the abil\u00adi\u00adty to devel\u00adop \u201cper\u00adson\u00adal mag\u00adnet\u00adism<\/a>\u201d and the pow\u00ader over the thoughts of oth\u00aders, among oth\u00ader ben\u00ade\u00adfits. To quote Edgerly: <\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe believe that Ral\u00adston\u00adism, since it is becom\u00ading uni\u00adver\u00adsal, is as nec\u00ades\u00adsary as food, light or water. This move\u00adment is the grand\u00adest, noblest, and already the most far-reach\u00ading pow\u00ader that has orig\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded in the present age. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cRal\u00adston\u00adism is the grand\u00adest move\u00adment that man is capa\u00adble of establishing\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nFol\u00adlow\u00aders were encour\u00adaged to pur\u00adchase the Ral\u00adston\u00adism books, among oth\u00ader ways to progress in the hier\u00adar\u00adchy of the movement. <\/p>\n

\nRal\u00adstonites were to fol\u00adlow strict dietary guide\u00adlines. \u2026 Cor\u00adrect diet and prop\u00ader phys\u00adi\u00adcal exer\u00adcise would help read\u00ader attain \u201cper\u00adson\u00adal mag\u00adnet\u00adism<\/a>\u201d, which would give them con\u00adtrol over the thoughts of oth\u00aders. Much of the phys\u00adi\u00adcal regime demand\u00aded mov\u00ading in grace\u00adful curves and arcs and walk\u00ading exclu\u00adsive\u00adly on the balls of one\u2019s feet. Because sud\u00adden starts and stops and sharp angu\u00adlar move\u00adments caused a \u201cleak\u00adage of vital force\u201d, Ral\u00adstonites were to even pick mar\u00adbles in con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous cir\u00adcles. There was a prop\u00ader way to bathe (dry bath), ges\u00adture, sit, stand, sleep, talk and have sex. Edger\u00adly claimed a sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic basis for all this. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nTo that end, he start\u00aded Ral\u00adson Heights in New Jer\u00adsey with the intent of cre\u00adat\u00ading a com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of Ral\u00adsonites. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty nev\u00ader mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adized before his death and after\u00adward much of the ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry was sold off. <\/p>\n
