\nWhen I awoke I found myself in bed in a trail\u00ader, and some\u00adone had tak\u00aden my clothes. The door opened and Rein\u00adhardt entered. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThus begins a lurid tale of the exploits of a car\u00adni\u00adval sideshow hyp\u00adno\u00adtist as told by the woman he swept away from her life, among the many oth\u00ader women he sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adly seduced and stole away and pressed into ser\u00advice at the car\u00adni\u00adval, man\u00adning the booths, with no way or no desire to return. <\/p>\n

\n\n<\/p>\n

\nHelen was a nor\u00admal adult woman, liv\u00ading a nor\u00admal life. Until, that is, she attend\u00aded a carny sideshow magi\u00adcian and hyp\u00adno\u00adtist show. She found her\u00adself drawn to the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, drawn up on stage, drawn to watch and lis\u00adten as the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist began speak\u00ading to her, and, well, that\u2019s the last she remem\u00adbers until the end of the show. But she was still drawn to the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, return\u00ading night after night, until the last night of the show, when she was drawn to meet him after the show.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd then she wakes up the next morn\u00ading, head pound\u00ading, pound\u00ading in response to the bounc\u00ading of the trail\u00ader she was rid\u00ading in. Rein\u00adhardt, the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, told her she told him she want\u00aded to run away with him. As for him, he pro\u00adfessed his love for her and offered to mar\u00adry her at the next town. Thus began their three-year long rela\u00adtion\u00adship, where she learned that she was not alone in her plight: oth\u00ader women, too, ran away to join the car\u00adni\u00adval, and were put to work run\u00adning the sim\u00adple carny games. But Helen was dif\u00adfer\u00adent, smarter, and was shown how to run the crooked wheel to fleece the marks. It would have worked, except for two things: one, where she finds out how the oth\u00ader girls were being recruit\u00aded, deep in a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic trance and lost in a haze of mar\u00adi\u00adjua\u00adna, and two, when she found Rein\u00adhardt with anoth\u00ader woman. <\/p>\n

\nThat\u2019s when she learned the truth: their mar\u00adriage was a lie, and the man she thought she loved was just anoth\u00ader carny hus\u00adtler. That\u2019s when he pulled out the pis\u00adtol and in their strug\u00adgle, it went off. Rein\u00adhardt the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist was made pow\u00ader\u00adless as the dis\u00adcharge blind\u00aded him. And as for Helen, once she recov\u00aders from the shock, tells her tale as a warn\u00ading to oth\u00aders and sets out to start her life over. <\/p>\n

\nCom\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> I have more than enough doubts about the valid\u00adi\u00adty of the sto\u00adry here to make me want to assign it as a work of fic\u00adtion, but my assign\u00adment phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy is to assign it to non\u00adfic\u00adtion if the author intend\u00aded it to be non\u00adfic\u00adtion. That said, I still think the whole sto\u00adry is either com\u00adplete\u00adly fic\u00adtion or else the com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of a num\u00adber of stereo\u00adtypes and sto\u00adries regard\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and the carny trade turned cau\u00adtion\u00adary tale and tittilation. <\/p>\n

\nCer\u00adtain\u00adly the staged and stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal pic\u00adtures accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading the arti\u00adcle don\u2019t help the over\u00adall feel\u00ading that I have about the valid\u00adi\u00adty (or, rather the lack of it) regard\u00ading the article. <\/p>\n
