An exper\u00adi\u00adment on the effec\u00adtive\u00adness of hyp\u00adno\u00adtism by radio was con\u00adduct\u00aded in Boston and Spring\u00adfield, Mass, by WBZ. Prof. Ger\u00adald M. P. Fitzgib\u00adbons, who stood at a micro\u00adphone in Spring\u00adfield, 100 miles from Boston, tried to mes\u00admer\u00adize two men who sat in the stu\u00addio of the Hotel Brunswick, Boston. The test failed to con\u00advince the psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgists, brain spe\u00adcial\u00adists, physi\u00adcians, radio experts and news\u00adpa\u00adper\u00admen who wit\u00adnessed it, but was called a suc\u00adcess by Prof. Fitzgibbons.<\/p>\n

Two of the three sub\u00adjects, one a for\u00admer Northamp\u00adton neigh\u00adbor of Pres\u00adi\u00addent Coolidge, appeared at times to have been hyp\u00adno\u00adtized by the Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor. The third sub\u00adject, Aaron Dashoff, of Fall Riv\u00ader, a stu\u00addent at Har\u00advard, sit\u00adting with the oth\u00ader sub\u00adjects, exposed him\u00adself to\u00c2  the same hyp\u00adnot\u00adic influ\u00adence, unknown to the pro\u00adfes\u00adsor and the oth\u00ader sub\u00adjects. He assert he was entire\u00adly unaffected.<\/p>\n

The wit\u00adness\u00ades were cer\u00adtain that the stu\u00addent did his best to con\u00adcen\u00adtrate on the mes\u00adsage of Prof. Fitzgib\u00adbons. He sat with his eyes closed, com\u00adply\u00ading with the orders that were com\u00ading from the loud\u00adspeak\u00aders, but when addressed said he had not been affect\u00aded at any time. The physi\u00adcians after\u00adward stat\u00aded they were doubt\u00adful as to the gen\u00aduine\u00adness of the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis into which the oth\u00ader two sub\u00adjects declared that had been thrown.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The rest of the arti\u00adcle fur\u00adther describes the event, adding that sev\u00ader\u00adal oth\u00aders in oth\u00ader cities also par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded. From the accounts, it cer\u00adtain\u00adly seems as though many of the peo\u00adple who par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded were hyp\u00adno\u00adtized. There are three pic\u00adtures of the event: in the large one on the cov\u00ader, two of the sub\u00adjects def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly appear to be in a trance, while one of the oth\u00ader two shows them in catalep\u00adsy, stretched between two chairs. (The third is of the hypnotist.)<\/p>\n

Here it was that Mar\u00adshall and Hall appar\u00adent\u00adly were over\u00adcome by the will of the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and suc\u00adcumbed to slum\u00adber. Their bod\u00adies were relaxed, their heads drooped for\u00adward and their arms hung loose\u00adly. But Dashoff seemed entire\u00adly unaffected.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, relax\u00adation is not the best demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic state.<\/p>\n

The sub\u00adjects were then told by the Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor that they were to have a humor\u00adous dream, and in a few moments Hall and Mar\u00adshall com\u00admenced to laugh heartily.<\/p>\n

He told them next that they were in the South and that huge mos\u00adqui\u00adtoes were pur\u00adsu\u00ading them and buzzing around their hears. And again these same two sub\u00adjects respond\u00aded prop\u00ader\u00adly. They thrashed their arms about them, endeav\u00ador\u00ading to chase away mind-made mosquitoes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From the pho\u00adtographs and the descrip\u00adtions, it cer\u00adtain\u00adly appears the two sub\u00adjects were hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, despite the com\u00adments of the wit\u00adness\u00ading physi\u00adcians. (Do I detect a faint whiff of denial-ism here?)<\/p>\n

The doc\u00adtors\u2019 state\u00adment, summed up, follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a most inter\u00adest\u00ading exper\u00adi\u00adment for us. We regret that the speed with which the sug\u00adges\u00adtions were made, the con\u00adscious\u00adness that the mes\u00adsage by Prof. Fitzgib\u00adbons one gone could not be recalled, gave us a rather unsat\u00adis\u00adfac\u00adto\u00adry oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to deter\u00admine the gen\u00aduine\u00adness of the demon\u00adstra\u00adtion with a final\u00adi\u00adty which might have been expected.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Its uncer\u00adtain what more the physi\u00adcians were look\u00ading for here: the two sub\u00adjects both visu\u00adal\u00adly demon\u00adstrat\u00aded a num\u00adber of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna, includ\u00ading the catalep\u00adsy. I have to won\u00adder just how well versed these attend\u00ading physi\u00adcians were famil\u00adiar with hypnosis.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> First off, when I first saw the mag\u00ada\u00adzine for sale, I thought it described an event more along the lines of what Pol\u00adgar had done, which was to broad\u00adcast the full induc\u00adtion over pub\u00adlic air\u00adwaves, with the intent of hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading the entire audi\u00adence (who want\u00aded to be hyp\u00adno\u00adtized.)
