Atom\u00adic sci\u00aden\u00adtist Doc\u00adtor Carl Meacham (Rex Rea\u00adson)<\/a> is select\u00aded to join a very secret sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic research orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion, based on his abil\u00adi\u00adty to assem\u00adble a device beyond any human sci\u00adence. What he dis\u00adcov\u00aders is more than just baf\u00adfling, and the peo\u00adple run\u00adning the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion are strange, includ\u00ading the leader, Exeter (Jeff Mor\u00adrow<\/a>). Even more strange, the oth\u00ader sci\u00aden\u00adtists are act\u00ading odd\u00adly, with a few excep\u00adtions like Doc\u00adtor Ruth Adams (Faith Domer\u00adgue<\/a>), Doc\u00adtor Carl\u00adson and Doc\u00adtor Engel\u00adborg, but even those excep\u00adtions are act\u00ading conspiratorially.<\/p>\n

But things don\u2019t stay that way: as Doc\u00adtors Meacham and Adams flee in a small air\u00adplane, a space\u00adship ris\u00ades from beneath the manor where the research was locat\u00aded, destroy\u00ading all evi\u00addence of the aliens\u2019 exis\u00adtence on Earth, includ\u00ading the oth\u00ader sci\u00aden\u00adtists who fled before the manor was destroyed. As for Meacham and Adams, they are brought on board the space\u00adship where they are told the truth: Exeter and his com\u00adpan\u00adions are from the plan\u00adet Met\u00adalu\u00adna, here on Earth seek\u00ading sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic answers to aid in the defense of their planet.<\/p>\n

Brought to Met\u00adalu\u00adna, it is obvi\u00adous that the plan\u00adet is close to destruc\u00adtion, and there is noth\u00ading the two sci\u00aden\u00adtists can do to help. Even the leader of Met\u00adalu\u00adna seems to under\u00adstand that, and intends to move the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of the plan\u00adet to Earth. Dis\u00adas\u00adter strikes before that can hap\u00adpen, and Exeter man\u00adages to return the two sci\u00aden\u00adtists back to Earth before per\u00adish\u00ading himself.<\/p>\n

And where is the mind con\u00adtrol? While not a major plot point, it was used by the Met\u00adalu\u00adnans to make the sci\u00aden\u00adtists more coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive, with a cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading loss of some of their intel\u00adli\u00adgence. It was that loss that caused Exeter to resist using that tech\u00adnique on sev\u00ader\u00adal of the sci\u00aden\u00adtists, includ\u00ading the Mecham and Adams, which is prob\u00ada\u00adbly why they escaped the orig\u00adi\u00adnal destruc\u00adtion of the manor.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> While this movie com\u00adbines ele\u00adments of a mys\u00adtery and a trav\u00adel\u00adogue, with a lit\u00adtle bit of hor\u00adror thrown in, there is one thing it is lack\u00ading: a real sto\u00adry with any kind of defined char\u00adac\u00adter devel\u00adop\u00adment or much sense of real con\u00adflict. I guess that\u2019s why the whole \u2018Met\u00adalu\u00adnan mutant\u2019 mon\u00adster ele\u00adment was thrown in, but its too lit\u00adtle, too late.<\/p>\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, it is still visu\u00adal\u00adly very intrigu\u00ading, espe\u00adcial\u00adly for the time it was made. The use of comets as mis\u00adsiles against the plan\u00adet of Met\u00adalu\u00adna as a mil\u00adi\u00adtary tac\u00adtic is one that is both phys\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly sound and remark\u00adably pre\u00adscient: Robert Hein\u00adlein wrote about some\u00adthing sim\u00adi\u00adlar is \u201cThe Moon is a Harsh Mis\u00adtress\u201d<\/em>. Its enough that aster\u00adoids can strike the plan\u00adet by acci\u00addent, but quite anoth\u00ader if they\u2019re guid\u00aded missiles.<\/p>\n
