Max Fac\u00adtor\u2019s Hyp\u00adno\u00adtique<\/span> \u2026 the new fra\u00adgrance that\u2019s cap\u00adtured the very essence of wom\u00adan\u2019s pow\u00ader over men. Cool\u00adly and with great ele\u00adgance Hyp\u00adno\u00adtique<\/span> attracts \u2026 holds \u2026 per\u00adsuades \u2026 and then! Any\u00adthing can hap\u00adpen! Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> All cos\u00admet\u00adics, includ\u00ading fra\u00adgrances, are designed in part to attract and focus atten\u00adtion on the wear\u00ader. Some fra\u00adgrances are just a lit\u00adtle more bla\u00adtant about it. Fra\u00adgrances with names like \u201cSpell\u00adbound\u201d, \u201cHyp\u00adnose\u201d, \u201cMes\u00admer\u00adize\u201d or \u201cHyp\u00adnot\u00adic Poi\u00adson\u201d  bla\u00adtant\u00adly sug\u00adgest the pow\u00ader of com\u00admand\u00ading and con\u00adtrol\u00adling men (although Avon\u2019s \u201cMes\u00admer\u00adize\u201d, which was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly a wom\u00adan\u2019s fra\u00adgrance, is now being more direct\u00adly mar\u00adket\u00aded toward men, strange\u00adly enough.) Even fra\u00adgrances not<\/em> so named are fre\u00adquent\u00adly adver\u00adtised using hyp\u00adnot\u00adic ter\u00admi\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and imagery.<\/p>\n

But one of the ear\u00adli\u00adest and cer\u00adtain\u00adly one of the most bla\u00adtant of the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic cos\u00admet\u00adics was \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span> by Max Fac\u00adtor. Released in the late 1950\u2019s, the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic imagery was very notice\u00adable in the mag\u00ada\u00adzine ads:<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll con\u00adcen\u00adtrate \u2026 con\u00adcen\u00adtrate \u2026 con\u00adcen\u00adtrate on you \u2026 when you wear Hyp\u00adno\u00adtique<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Add the image of a love\u00adly and almost naked (the straps around the neck are bare\u00adly vis\u00adi\u00adble) woman hold\u00ading the bot\u00adtle of per\u00adfume on a chain like a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pen\u00addant, smil\u00ading sly\u00adly in invi\u00adta\u00adtion as she gazes direct\u00adly at the view\u00ader and the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic imagery is com\u00adplete. Fur\u00adther mag\u00ada\u00adzine ads main\u00adtained the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic or vamp motif, set\u00adting the per\u00adfume bot\u00adtle swing\u00ading hyp\u00adnot\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, behind which a pair of entranc\u00ading, star\u00ading eyes seem to trap the view\u00ader\u2019s gaze, or mysteriously.<\/p>\n

His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> Max Fac\u00adtor<\/a> (ne\u00e9 Max\u00adi\u00adm\u00adil\u00adian Fak\u00adtorow\u00adicz) was a well-known make\u00adup artist of the ear\u00adly days of Hol\u00adly\u00adwood: he cre\u00adat\u00aded his own make\u00adup because the heavy the\u00adatri\u00adcal grease\u00adpaint make\u00adup at the time was too heavy for the hot lights and the cam\u00aderas. He cre\u00adat\u00aded a vari\u00adety of make\u00adup for the film and tele\u00advi\u00adsion indus\u00adtry, some of which are still in stan\u00addard use today. He was also the per\u00adson\u00adal make\u00adup artist for a num\u00adber of top Hol\u00adly\u00adwood stars, includ\u00ading Claudette Col\u00adbert, Bet\u00adty Davis, Joan Craw\u00adford and Judy Gar\u00adland, going so far as cre\u00adat\u00ading spe\u00adcial make\u00adup for them alone. His work was so famous that his beau\u00adty salon near Hol\u00adly\u00adwood Boule\u00advard was extreme\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar. Max, Senior, died in 1938 but his son Max, Junior car\u00adried on the fam\u00adi\u00adly busi\u00adness through the time of the release of \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span>. The label was sold after the sec\u00adond gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of own\u00aders and is now owned by Proc\u00adtor & Gamble.<\/p>\n

I have been able to track down three mag\u00ada\u00adzine ads specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly for \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span>. As can be seen, the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic imagery in the mag\u00ada\u00adzine ads would evolve over time. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly I have not been able to ascer\u00adtain a date for the last two ads.<\/p>\n

In the first mag\u00ada\u00adzine ad above, in use from the ini\u00adtial release in 1958 through at least 1961, the woman is almost dar\u00ading the view\u00ader to be hyp\u00adno\u00adtized. Also note that the pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant gold\u00aden col\u00ador of the ad that match\u00ades the gold\u00aden orange col\u00ador of the con\u00adtents of the bot\u00adtle and the gold\u00aden hair and jew\u00adel\u00adry of the mod\u00adel. The tone is more seduc\u00adtive than hyp\u00adnot\u00adic. The mod\u00adel, I been told but have not been able to con\u00adfirm, is actress Lana Turn\u00ader<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

In the sec\u00adond (1959) mag\u00ada\u00adzine ad, the tone is def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly more hyp\u00adnot\u00adic; the swing\u00ading bot\u00adtle, the direct gaze of the mod\u00adel, the phan\u00adtom hyp\u00adnot\u00adic gaze hov\u00ader\u00ading above the rest. The dark back\u00adground only empha\u00adsizes the mys\u00adtery involved.  It also changes the orig\u00adi\u00adnal text, plac\u00ading it behind the swing\u00ading bot\u00adtle and mak\u00ading it more force\u00adful than before:<\/p>\n

Make him con\u00adcen\u00adtrate \u2026 con\u00adcen\u00adtrate \u2026 con\u00adcen\u00adtrate on you \u2026 when you wear \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Note the descrip\u00adtion \u201cA mag\u00adnet\u00adic new fra\u00adgrance by Max Fac\u00adtor\u201d at the bot\u00adtom, invok\u00ading thoughts of \u2018per\u00adson\u00adal mag\u00adnet\u00adism\u2019 or \u2018ani\u00admal mag\u00adnet\u00adism\u2019 from the time of Mesmer.<\/p>\n

In the third (1961) ad, the sense of mys\u00adtery is deep\u00adened and the \u2018vamp\u2019 motif is played up while the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic motif is down\u00adplayed. The \u2018induc\u00adtion\u2019 text is now miss\u00ading, along with any hyp\u00adnot\u00adic imagery, replaced with a larg\u00ader and more sul\u00adtry image of a cool and dis\u00adpas\u00adsion\u00adate woman: note that she isn\u2019t even look\u00ading toward the view\u00ader. The only rem\u00adnant of the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic motif is the tag line: \u201cThe per\u00adfume for the woman who was born to enchant men.\u201d<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Com\u00ading as it did dur\u00ading the \u201cBridey Mur\u00adphy\u201d<\/em> hey\u00adday, \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span> def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly seems both a reac\u00adtion to and an attempt to take advan\u00adtage of the inter\u00adest in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis at the time. In doing so, it also plays in to a num\u00adber of stereo\u00adtypes about fem\u00adi\u00adnine pow\u00ader at the very begin\u00adning of the Wom\u00aden\u2019s Move\u00adment of the 60\u2019s. Women were being encour\u00adaged to act out\u00adside the 50\u2019s-era stereo\u00adtypes, explor\u00ading new ones and val\u00adi\u00addat\u00ading old ones as well. One of those old stereo\u00adtypes was the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic vamp, cool and mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous, pos\u00adsess\u00ading the abil\u00adi\u00adty to dom\u00adi\u00adnate men as opposed and in revenge to being dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded for so long.<\/p>\n

Triv\u00adia:<\/em> \u201cHyp\u00adno\u00adtique\u201d<\/span> was appar\u00adent\u00adly quite pop\u00adu\u00adlar, judg\u00ading from the range of ways it was pack\u00adaged. The fra\u00adgrance was dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted in a num\u00adber of ways, not just in the tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal bot\u00adtles but also non-tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal ways includ\u00ading lock\u00adets but the most inter\u00adest\u00ading was a ring con\u00adtain\u00ading a sol\u00adid per\u00adfume sam\u00adple, a rather inter\u00adest\u00ading take on the poi\u00adson ring trope.<\/p>\n

Recomen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Not real\u00adly much to rec\u00adom\u00admend: the fra\u00adgrance has\u00adn\u2019t been pro\u00adduced in over 30 years, although it still can be found for resale on eBay and oth\u00ader online resellers \/ retailers.<\/p>\n
