The foes of the leg\u00adendary Legion of Super-Heroes<\/a> are them\u00adselves indeed legion and leg\u00adendary: beings like the enig\u00admat\u00adic Time Trap\u00adper and the mon\u00adstrous mas\u00adter com\u00adput\u00ader Com\u00adputo, the dark magi\u00adcian Mor\u00addru and even the infa\u00admous Dark\u00adseid; groups like the Fatal Five, the Dark Cir\u00adcle and the Legion of Super-Vil\u00adlains; whole races like the Dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtors, the Khunds and the Con\u00adtrollers. Most have had their fleet\u00ading vic\u00adto\u00adries, their rare moments of tri\u00adumph before the Legion defeat\u00aded them.<\/p>\n

Yet there is one oppo\u00adnent who can claim to have achieved his goal of world dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion against the oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion of the Legion, not sim\u00adply once but twice, and both times for extend\u00aded peri\u00adods, to the point the Legion was forced to bat\u00adtle him as under\u00addogs, some\u00adthing no oth\u00ader oppo\u00adnent of the Legion through\u00adout its long his\u00adto\u00adry and many revi\u00adsions has achieved.<\/p>\n

That oppo\u00adnent is the malev\u00ado\u00adlent hyp\u00adno\u00adtist (or telepath) Universo.<\/p>\n

Uni\u00adver\u00adso<\/a> is one of the Legion\u2019s old\u00adest oppo\u00adnents, dat\u00ading back to the Sil\u00adver Age era. How\u00adev\u00ader, he has a strange his\u00adto\u00adry that has changed and changed again. In the first con\u00adti\u00adnu\u00adity, Uni\u00adver\u00adso was a hyp\u00adno\u00adtist and mind-con\u00adtroller, as well as a mas\u00adter plot\u00adter and schemer, where\u00adas he became a Titan telepath at one point. In the cur\u00adrent con\u00adti\u00adnu\u00adity, he did appear but did not show any powers.<\/p>\n

In his first appear\u00adance in Adven\u00adture Comics #349<\/a>, he drew his pow\u00ader from the Kryp\u00adtonite-enhanced eye amulet he wore, tak\u00ading con\u00adtrol of the six Legion\u00adnaires present, includ\u00ading Super\u00adboy. How\u00adev\u00ader, Braini\u00adac 5 was able to resist his pow\u00ader just enough to force Uni\u00adver\u00adso to retreat, where\u00adupon he stole one of the Legion\u2019s time bub\u00adbles and escaped to the past. The oth\u00ader time bub\u00adble was destroyed, and Super\u00adboy unable to repair it with his super-speed, as he was still under the influ\u00adence of Uni\u00adver\u00adso\u2019s amulet.<\/p>\n

At the same time, they are warned by the Time Insti\u00adtute that Uni\u00adver\u00adso appeared in five dif\u00adfer\u00adent time peri\u00adods, and the five Legion\u00adnaires decide to use the lim\u00adit\u00aded time trav\u00adel tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy dis\u00adplayed by Rond Vidar at the Sci\u00adence Fair pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly. That tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy allowed the five Legion\u00adnaires to attempt to inter\u00adcept Uni\u00adver\u00adso in the past but they were all traps set by Uni\u00adver\u00adso, even down to the warn\u00ading they received. With the Legion\u00adnaires out of the way, he went to the Unit\u00aded Plan\u00adets Coun\u00adcil and tried to use the pow\u00ader of his amulet to take con\u00adtrol, but the coun\u00adcil mem\u00adbers present were the five Legion\u00adnaires in dis\u00adguise, who were men\u00adtal\u00adly \u2018treat\u00aded\u2019 by Sat\u00adurn Girl to be able to resist his pow\u00ader. As to how they were res\u00adcued, Rond Vidar improved the time trav\u00adel tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy to enable him to res\u00adcue each Legion\u00adnaire from the death trap and return them to the present. And, as for Super\u00adboy, once Braini\u00adac 5 had the amulet, he freed Super\u00adboy from his trance.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> This one-issue sto\u00adry goes a long way to show Uni\u00adver\u00adso\u2019s skill at plot\u00adting: when his first plot (or gam\u00adbit) failed, he imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly went into a much deep\u00ader plot that sep\u00ada\u00adrat\u00aded each Legion\u00adnaire in\u00c2  the past with no way to return and with lit\u00adtle chance of sur\u00adviv\u00ading anyway.<\/p>\n

As for that amulet, even though he would there\u00adafter wear it as part of his cos\u00adtume, he did\u00adn\u2019t use it as such in lat\u00ader sto\u00adries. But was his amulet green because of the Kryp\u00adtonite, or is there a deep\u00ader mean\u00ading here? As a for\u00admer Green Lantern, he may still have Lantern-based abil\u00adi\u00adties or even \u2018ille\u00adgal\u2019 access to Lantern ener\u00adgies. Or maybe his \u2018eye\u2019 is relat\u00aded some\u00adhow to the Emer\u00adald Eye of Ekron, wield\u00aded by the Emer\u00adald Empress of the Fatal Five.<\/p>\n
