Long ago, the four nations lived togeth\u00ader in har\u00admo\u00adny. Then every\u00adthing changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, mas\u00adter of all four ele\u00adments, could stop them. But when the world need\u00aded him most, he van\u00adished. A hun\u00addred years passed and my broth\u00ader and I dis\u00adcov\u00adered the new Avatar, an air\u00adben\u00adder named Aang. And although his air\u00adbend\u00ading skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he\u2019s ready to save anyone.<\/p>\n

But I believe Aang can save the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Back\u00adground:<\/em> in \u201cAvatar: the Last Air\u00adben\u00adder\u201d<\/em><\/a> Aang is a boy with a des\u00adtiny and a his\u00adto\u00adry: he is the Avatar, the cur\u00adrent incar\u00adna\u00adtion of an eter\u00adnal chain, the one who pos\u00adsess\u00ades the pow\u00ader to wield all four of the ele\u00adments, fat\u00aded to restore the bal\u00adance of nature that was bro\u00adken by the Fire Lord and the con\u00adquer\u00ading of the world by the Fire Nation. Except, a cen\u00adtu\u00adry before, when he was sup\u00adposed to stop the Fire Nation, he dis\u00adap\u00adpeared, and only now has returned. The prob\u00adlem is that he\u2019s still a young boy, not even a teenag\u00ader, and his com\u00adpan\u00adions are lit\u00adtle old\u00ader than he is. Its a pret\u00adty heavy bur\u00adden to shoul\u00adder, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when he\u2019s also hunt\u00aded by the Fire Nation and hunt\u00ading those who can help him mas\u00adter the four elements.<\/p>\n

Aang is orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly joined by two young mem\u00adbers of the Water Tribe, Sok\u00adka and Katara: Katara pos\u00adsess\u00ades the pow\u00ader to \u2018bend\u2019 the ele\u00adment of Water, and lat\u00ader Toph, an Earth ben\u00adder and Zuko, the prince of the Fire Nation who betrayed his father to join the Avatar.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> On their jour\u00adney, Aang, Sok\u00adka, Katara and Toph find a vil\u00adlage with a mys\u00adtery: every full moon, says the old woman Hama who finds them in the for\u00adest, peo\u00adple would dis\u00adap\u00adpear from the for\u00adest they were just wan\u00adder\u00ading through. And the full moon is ris\u00ading soon.<\/p>\n

\u00c2 Hama \u2014 \u201cWhen the Moon turns full, they walk in \u2026 and they don\u2019t walk out.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although they want to con\u00adtin\u00adue, they are shown that Hama is not only from the South\u00adern Water Tribe, but is also a Water ben\u00adder. She was tak\u00aden years ago by the Fire Nation, impris\u00adoned and lat\u00ader escaped, and now offers to teach Katara more about water bend\u00ading. But what she has to teach her is born of her years as a pris\u00adon\u00ader, where she learned to take water from what\u00adev\u00ader source she could, and, when the pow\u00ader of the Moon was at its height when it was full, com\u00admand even the blood of her oppo\u00adnents, includ\u00ading the vil\u00adlagers she drew away into their own imprisonment.<\/p>\n

But Katara is repulsed by the thought of blood bend\u00ading, and bat\u00adtles both it and Hama, as Hama attempts to con\u00adtrol her, but Katara\u2019s own water bend\u00ading pow\u00aders are stronger. And they have to be, because Hama then takes con\u00adtrol of Aang and Sok\u00adka through her blood bend\u00ading. Unable to bat\u00adtle three oppo\u00adnents, she is forced to adapt blood bend\u00ading her\u00adself to defeat Hama.<\/p>\n

Hama \u2014 \u201cMy work is done. Con\u00adgrat\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions, Katara: you\u2019re a blood ben\u00adder.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Katara does\u00adn\u2019t use her blood bend\u00ading much, but in \u2018The South\u00adern Raiders\u2019<\/em> she\u2019s angry enough to use it despite her reluc\u00adtance. And she even scares Zuko a little.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> It is the mark of a real\u00adly good pro\u00adgram aimed for younger view\u00aders when it also appeals to adults. Nor does is hurt that the voice tal\u00adent (some\u00adthing I\u2019ve stressed in the past with oth\u00ader ani\u00admat\u00aded series) behind the char\u00adac\u00adters were all first-rate.\u00c2  The series won sev\u00ader\u00adal pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal awards dur\u00ading its 3 year run and was one of the most pop\u00adu\u00adlar series on the network.<\/p>\n
