His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> In 2005 I won a copy of the online game Guild\u00adWars<\/a> with\u00adout real\u00adly want\u00adi\u00adng it. There\u00adfore, I didn\u2019t exam\u00adine the game for a month or so, fig\u00adur\u00ading I didn\u2019t have time for an online game, but the box art\u00adwork and some of the things I saw about it online con\u00advinced me to take a fur\u00adther look. Lit\u00adtle did I real\u00adize what I was going to get myself in to.<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> What I soon dis\u00adcov\u00adered was a very rich\u00adly visu\u00adal and lit\u00ader\u00adary world. The set\u00adting is lush with vivid loca\u00adtions, fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters and inter\u00adest\u00ading sto\u00adry lines. (And, dur\u00ading the semi-annu\u00adal hol\u00adi\u00adday events, sev\u00ader\u00adal of the loca\u00adtions get a hol\u00adi\u00adday-themed makeover.) The art\u00adwork con\u00advinced me to look clos\u00ader, but it was the char\u00adac\u00adter gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion sys\u00adtem that con\u00advinced me to stay.<\/p>\n

The char\u00adac\u00adter gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion sys\u00adtem is based on pro\u00adfes\u00adsions. Each pro\u00adfes\u00adsion has spe\u00adcial skills or spells avail\u00adable only to them, plus the option of hav\u00ading a sec\u00adondary pro\u00adfes\u00adsion to com\u00adpli\u00adment the pri\u00adma\u00adry pro\u00adfes\u00adsion. There are six basic pro\u00adfes\u00adsions in the main game and two each in the lat\u00ader expan\u00adsion cam\u00adpaigns: some are famil\u00adiar to any\u00adone who has played any kind of fan\u00adta\u00adsy role\u00adplay\u00ading games, oth\u00aders less familiar.<\/p>\n

And one pro\u00adfes\u00adsion that imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly attract\u00aded my atten\u00adtion: Mes\u00admer. Not many role\u00adplay\u00ading games, online or not, allow for the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to a spell\u00adcast\u00ader to spe\u00adcial\u00adize in cast\u00ading pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly hyp\u00adnot\u00adic-themed spells. I just had to try this game out.<\/p>\n

The first thing to do was cre\u00adate a char\u00adac\u00adter. The game allows sev\u00ader\u00adal dozen vari\u00ada\u00adtions in cre\u00adat\u00ading a unique char\u00adac\u00adter appear\u00adance based on the cam\u00adpaign set\u00adting. The orig\u00adi\u00adnal cam\u00adpaign, Prophe\u00adcies, is more tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly West\u00adern Euro\u00adpean in nature, so char\u00adac\u00adters from that cam\u00adpaign will have West\u00adern fea\u00adtures. On the oth\u00ader hand, a char\u00adac\u00adter from the Ori\u00aden\u00adtal Fac\u00adtions cam\u00adpaign will have ori\u00aden\u00adtal fea\u00adtures and their armor will have ori\u00aden\u00adtal accents, while a char\u00adac\u00adter from the Mediter\u00adranean and North\u00adern African Night\u00adfall cam\u00adpaign will be of dark\u00ader skin and have more trib\u00adal appear\u00adances. In all my time play\u00ading, I have yet to find anoth\u00ader char\u00adac\u00adter look\u00ading exact\u00adly like any one of my four dif\u00adfer\u00adent char\u00adac\u00adter. Hav\u00ading mul\u00adti\u00adple options for armor sets and col\u00adors and weapons also helps.<\/p>\n

Since the Prophe\u00adcies cam\u00adpaign was the only cam\u00adpaign avail\u00adable at that time, my first char\u00adac\u00adter, Shiar\u00adra Drae\u00adga, is def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly Euro\u00adpean in appear\u00adance: female, tall (for a woman and her pro\u00adfes\u00adsion) with red hair and pale skin. Her face is slight\u00adly tri\u00adan\u00adgu\u00adlar: I admit I was try\u00ading for a Fae appear\u00adance. That her hair is pulled back into a bun, with bangs across the fore\u00adhead and a few curls escap\u00ading in back, was the best choice I had at the time, but it fits with the over\u00adall image I have of Mes\u00admers as con\u00adtrol freaks.<\/p>\n

Then I start\u00aded play\u00ading. The game starts begin\u00adning play\u00aders in a bucol\u00adic world, where they are recruit\u00aded by their king\u00addom to main\u00adtain the watch over the bar\u00adbar\u00adian, cat like Charr to the north. Most of the mis\u00adsions here are to acquaint play\u00aders with their char\u00adac\u00adters and how to manip\u00adu\u00adlate them. Once that is done, the real sto\u00adry line begins.<\/p>\n

The Charr over\u00adrun the king\u00addom and the pop\u00adu\u00adlace is forced to flee. Through that flight, they meet with var\u00adi\u00adous peo\u00adple, some of whom we help, some of whom we lat\u00ader learn were using them for their own advan\u00adtage, and one who was the ulti\u00admate insti\u00adga\u00adtor of the trou\u00adbles. The char\u00adac\u00adters must grow and learn to over\u00adcome their adver\u00adsaries to restore a sem\u00adblance of order to their world. Essen\u00adtial\u00adly, that is the sto\u00adry\u00adline through\u00adout the whole game, in all three cam\u00adpaign worlds and the one expansion.<\/p>\n

Over the past three years, I have tak\u00aden Shiar\u00adra through all three cam\u00adpaigns and the one cam\u00adpaign expan\u00adsion. And I\u2019ve have a great time. I like the inter\u00adac\u00adtion between play\u00aders dur\u00ading the game (even if some\u00adtimes they act like total idiots) and appre\u00adci\u00adate the visu\u00adal and lit\u00ader\u00adary effort the cre\u00adators have put into the game.<\/p>\n

But enough about the over\u00adall game. What you\u2019re prob\u00ada\u00adbly want\u00adi\u00adng to know more about are the Mesmers.<\/p>\n

Because Mes\u00admers, as might be expect\u00aded, cast mind mag\u00adic spells, they are sub\u00adtle spell\u00adcast\u00aders. In fact, they have few vis\u00adi\u00adbly man\u00adi\u00adfest\u00ading spells at all. They cause ene\u00admies to destroy them\u00adselves through their Dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion mag\u00adic or cause them to suf\u00adfer debil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00ading hex\u00ades through their Illu\u00adsion mag\u00adic while using Inspi\u00adra\u00adtion mag\u00adic to con\u00adtrol spells and manip\u00adu\u00adlate mag\u00adi\u00adcal ener\u00adgy. As such, a good Mes\u00admer com\u00adpli\u00adments their allies and defeats their oppo\u00adnents in qui\u00adet but extreme\u00adly effec\u00adtive ways. About the only thing they can\u00adnot do, how\u00adev\u00ader, is actu\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adtrol an ene\u00admy into fight\u00ading for them, which is kind of a good thing, because oppo\u00adnents have access to the same spells and abil\u00adi\u00adties as the play\u00aders. In fact, that\u2019s some\u00adtimes the way to acquire new spells is to defeat some\u00adone with that spell and per\u00adform a cap\u00adtur\u00ading rit\u00adu\u00adal to obtain it.<\/p>\n

Mes\u00admers are also spe\u00adcial\u00adists in under\u00adstand\u00ading how mag\u00adic works. Their pro\u00adfes\u00adsion under\u00adstands mag\u00adic so well they can take short\u00adcuts dur\u00ading cast\u00ading, there\u00adby cast\u00ading their spells much faster than any oth\u00ader spell\u00adcast\u00ader. That under\u00adstand\u00ading also gives them sev\u00ader\u00adal spells that inter\u00adrupt rival spellcasters\u2019s spells or cause the spells to over\u00adload or back\u00adfire. Inter\u00adrupt\u00ading spells is prob\u00ada\u00adbly a Mesmer\u2019s great\u00adest asset to any mis\u00adsion team.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

One thing that peo\u00adple will soon notice is that Mes\u00admers are extreme\u00adly attrac\u00adtive. Mes\u00admers have at least the sec\u00adond-most flam\u00adboy\u00adant and cer\u00adtain\u00adly the most ele\u00adgant look\u00ading armor sets of all the pro\u00adfes\u00adsions (the image above is my character\u2019s first set of elite armor: I think it looks more suit\u00aded for the bed\u00adroom than the bat\u00adtle\u00adfield.) Also, all pro\u00adfes\u00adsions have a dance rou\u00adtine they can per\u00adform on com\u00admand: female Mes\u00admers do a Fla\u00admen\u00adco style dance while the male Mes\u00admers per\u00adform an Irish step-dance. And, if you find some\u00adone who bought the deluxe edi\u00adtion of the game, their character\u2019s hand move\u00adments will be accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by trail\u00ading sparkles of light, adding quite a mys\u00adti\u00adcal flair to the performance.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The above image is one of the Mes\u00admer hero char\u00adac\u00adters in the game, Koro Sagewind. Again, flam\u00adboy\u00adant yet ele\u00adgant. (Koro is appar\u00adent\u00adly based on an ani\u00adme series \u201cWolf and Spice\u201d<\/em><\/a> and the female lead, Horo, the Wise Wolf.) She is car\u00adry\u00ading a Mes\u00admer staff: it appears to be the Trick\u00adster, pos\u00adsi\u00adbly tak\u00aden from a Charr Mes\u00admer boss (not unex\u00adpect\u00aded, as she is a mem\u00adber of the Ebon Van\u00adguard, the Charr are her enemies.)<\/p>\n

A lot of begin\u00adning play\u00aders tend to dis\u00admiss Mes\u00admers, main\u00adly because they are so sub\u00adtle and less showy than oth\u00ader pro\u00adfes\u00adsions, plus being dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to mas\u00adter, so they are less preva\u00adlent in the game than many oth\u00ader pro\u00adfes\u00adsions. How\u00adev\u00ader, a good Mes\u00admer can be a great asset for just about any mis\u00adsion. Their abil\u00adi\u00adty to cause oppo\u00adnents to harm them\u00adselves can take down some of the tough\u00adest oppo\u00adnents who spe\u00adcial\u00adize in deal\u00ading lots of dam\u00adage to lots of oppo\u00adnents at once: Shi\u00adro the Assas\u00adsin in the final \u201cboss\u201d in the Fac\u00adtions cam\u00adpaign, and has a spe\u00adcial abil\u00adi\u00adty that can be a Total Par\u00adty Killer, but with the right Mes\u00admer spells on him, he winds up killing him\u00adself instead.<\/p>\n

Adden\u00adda:<\/em> As I am writ\u00ading this, Guild\u00adWars 2<\/em> is in beta test stage. Are\u00adnaNet has not revealed whether Mes\u00admers will be a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion in GW2 but only the stan\u00addard pro\u00adfes\u00adsions from the orig\u00adi\u00adnal set have been revealed so far.<\/p>\n
