Fif\u00adteen years ago, Tere\u00adsa \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Trance\u00e2\u20ac\u009d West was a skilled telepath and a proud mem\u00adber of the Ranger Corps. But ever since the Rangers were inex\u00adplic\u00ada\u00adbly ren\u00addered pow\u00ader\u00adless at the cli\u00admax of the dev\u00adas\u00adtat\u00ading Meta War, she\u2019s bounced from one dead-end job to anoth\u00ader. Now her pow\u00aders have reap\u00adpeared just as mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous\u00adly as they van\u00adished\u00e2\u20ac\u201d only they\u2019re com\u00adplete\u00adly trans\u00adformed and more potent than ever. And they\u2019re threat\u00aden\u00ading to destroy her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was a bat\u00adtle decades in mak\u00ading: the Ranger Corps, gov\u00adern\u00adment spon\u00adsored Metas (peo\u00adple with super-pow\u00aders) bat\u00adtling the Banes (any\u00adone else with sim\u00adi\u00adlar pow\u00aders.) It all came down to a run\u00adning bat\u00adtle in down\u00adtown Man\u00adhat\u00adtan, as the more numer\u00adous Banes slew the Rangers, reduc\u00ading their num\u00adbers until only the youngest mem\u00adbers remained, which includ\u00aded Trance, \u2018ten-going-on-eleven\u2019 with the pow\u00ader to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize peo\u00adple by look\u00ading into their eyes, which was\u00adn\u2019t much help dur\u00ading the run\u00adning fire\u00adfight. It was all reach\u00ading the end, their com\u00adrades and fam\u00adi\u00adly down, noth\u00ading left to pro\u00adtect and defend them.<\/p>\n

And then it was over. All the Metas lost their pow\u00aders at once. The gov\u00adern\u00adment stepped in to remove the remain\u00ading under\u00adaged Rangers and try to return them to soci\u00adety, leav\u00ading the Banes to stay on the ruined island. And the world went on with its business.<\/p>\n

But it was\u00adn\u2019t over. Some\u00adhow, the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous process that caused the Metas to lose their pow\u00aders stopped sev\u00ader\u00adal years lat\u00ader. The bat\u00adtle, left on hold for so many years, was back on again. Their old ene\u00admy, Spec\u00adtre, was already tar\u00adget\u00ading them before they can re-unite.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Alas, the only scene seen with Trance using her hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00aders is in the first few pages, so the poten\u00adtial of the book\u2019s title was essen\u00adtial\u00adly wast\u00aded, but it still is wor\u00adthy of being an entry in the Col\u00adlec\u00adtion because of the pow\u00aders of the oppo\u00adnent, Spec\u00adtre, which are tele\u00adpath\u00adic and tele\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic con\u00adtrol, which he uses to con\u00adtrol inno\u00adcent vic\u00adtims and force them to attack the Meta heroes.<\/p>\n

His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> I saw this title at the book\u00adstore last week and felt tempt\u00aded to get it, if only for the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty that the \u2018trance\u2019 as described involved some form of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic con\u00adtrol. I was not dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00aded when I dis\u00adcov\u00adered this line with\u00adin the first few pages:<\/p>\n

My abil\u00adi\u00adty to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize peo\u00adple and alter their thoughts worked only if I looked them in the eye.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u00adfore I was dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00aded when at the end of the first chap\u00adter, every one of the Metas lost their pow\u00aders, and lat\u00ader, when they got them back, Trance got her grand\u00admoth\u00ader\u2019s ener\u00adgy con\u00adtrol pow\u00aders instead. Such a waste \u2026<\/p>\n

And I did have my doubts about the book, because it had the (exter\u00adnal) hall\u00admarks of being part of the \u2018para\u00adnor\u00admal romance\u2019 genre, but I found that this was\u00adn\u2019t the case. There is a strong roman\u00adtic ele\u00adment to it, but its not as strong as the genre I men\u00adtioned would indi\u00adcate. For my part, I see the \u2018para\u00adnor\u00admal romance\u2019 genre con\u00adsist\u00ading of hot chicks with para\u00adnor\u00admal back\u00adgrounds (vam\u00adpires, demons, were\u00adwolves, etc.) involved equal\u00adly with hot&heavy sex and vio\u00adlence. This was\u00adn\u2019t the case here, as the sex was pret\u00adty non-exis\u00adtent and the romance angle as a ratio\u00adnal part of the char\u00adac\u00adter development.<\/p>\n
